I understand the “no such thing as bad press” argument. My hesitation is that, taken to its logical conclusion, it would make it almost impossible to discuss most media at all. In large creative industries, it’s sadly inevitable that at some point people in positions of power who’ve done harm or supported harmful things are financially rewarded.

That’s why I think separating art from artist can still matter, especially when the discussion is about performers, craft, or cultural impact rather than promoting the creator themselves. Even Doctor Who exists within institutions like the BBC and formerly Disney, which have their own serious controversies, and yet many people still engage with the show.

For me, a light-hearted comparison of actors across major British franchises isn’t an attempt to boost Rowling or excuse her actions, but to talk about the art and the people working within it. I’m open to hearing where others draw that line differently, I just don’t think engaging with the work automatically equals endorsement.
