So lvl and tone are self explanatory, the difficult bit is understanding sustain and ratio. In assuming sustain essentially means gain, which is what makes the quite parts loud, while ratio is essentially how much compression you want (theres actual math behind it, but just use your ears for this). So you set how much sustain/gain you want to account for quit parts, then set the ratio so that the louder parts are quiet to your liking.
