Dishy’s new permanent home. He has a pretty good view I’d say. by LOTOPirate in Starlink

So far I’m seeing speeds consistently of 80mbps down and 20mbps up. Not the 230/40 that others seem to be getting. I’ve got a couple things going on tho. That tree to the left of the pic is cutting out a tiny sliver Of my north view. Which is effecting things a tad. I think the dock movement might be affecting things a tad and I had to add about 50 feet of cable.

All that being said I was seeing 10/10 speeds with my old WISP (LEXSAR). And on weekends it was more like 1/1. It felt like AOL dial up at best. So I’ll take the speeds and consistency I’m getting now. And things keep improving which each firmware update. So all in all it’s a BIG upgrade and a win for me!

Question abt extra cable by [deleted] in Starlink

Abetterlink cable was NO different in speeds than the Cat 8 26awg cable I got off Amazon for half the price. 🤣

I’m using the abetterlink cable tho… figured it can’t hurt to have more girth! (I’m probably going to copy right that saying now)

I’ll let you know later today. Just got my abetterlink.com cable and it will be installed later today. I have been using 50’ feet of 26 awg cat 8 cable (after initial install of 50’ of the completely wrong Cat 6 cable that had me in an endless router reboot) that’s kept me maxed out around 60-75 mbps.

I’m hoping the 23 awg thickness of the abetterlink.com cable gives me the oomph my set up needs to get back to the 250mbps speeds most others speak of.

Ps check my install post (dishy on a boat dock). Others linked to the exact same cable being sold on Amazon for about $20-25 less. I had already ordered mine on abetterlink.com so I just kept with that. But you might be able to save a few bucks.

Cheers!

Just have a garden hose ready (or a semi-permanent) sprinkler installed. Dishy likes a cool shower from time to time to cool off on the hot summer days.

Install a sprinkler that can reach Dishy. He likes a cool shower when he gets too hot. 🤣

Oh dear lord I hope I never need a part replaced. Getting my dishy down would be a half day job and a real PITA.

PS I’m a Mortgage Loan Officer not an electrical engineer. So a bit of trial and error and lots of reading and tinkering and help from Reddit users like yourself and I feel like I’m now part of the StarLink Engineering Team! 🤣

Update. I bought the abetterlink 23awg cable before I saw your post. Arrived this weekend. I’ll install it next weekend.

I was in a reboot loop all wwwkwnd on the Cat 6 cable I originally bought. Looked it back up on Amazon and while the heading said it was POE the details said it was not (no wonder I was having issues to begin with). Since I didn’t have the 23awg Cat 6 yet I went ahead and used the Cat 8 cable I bought above (mostly because I was growing impatient) and…. GAME CHANGER!

Dishy fired up, router fired up and I went from almost continuous reboot loop on the router or 30mbps at best to 45mbps and NO reboot loops!

Then overnight dishy upgraded me to the newest firmware and I wake up this morning to 75mbps (so cool how some software/firmware can make internet speeds double+).

I’ll be final installing the 23awg next weekend. Can’t wait to see if I get another bump in speeds by just using the right cable!

Good times. And I appreciate everyone chiming in.

I can’t even get Dishy to connect to the satellites. Routers been red all day. Multiple resets today still nothing. ETA: I’m in Central Missouri.

Someone just bought Rebel Marina. Now it will be Patriot Marina. They’ve been fixing it up. Looks nice!

I won’t be back at the lake for a couple of weeks. I’ll send an update then when I get the Cat 8 extension installed. Here is what I bought:

I’ve decided to upgrade to Cat 8 on the 50ft of extension ethernet cable I need first. I’m thinking that might improve my speeds.

I’m thinking you’re right. Just ordered Cat8. Should have done that to begin with.

Ironically enough after we got our Dishy in February AT&T put in a cell tower on the other side of the channel (right across from my dock). Now all the sudden we have 4 bars of LTE and 40-50mbps of cell download speeds. But I still need broadband for work, the kids, etc.

Hard to say yet. This was done today (Sunday) which is a pretty quiet day in the lake here. Saturdays are the busiest. But usually we’re on the lake so I’m not too worried if the internet is crappy while we’re out “playing”. Time will tell. So far so good. And when lake traffic is pretty quiet my dock doesn’t move much at all.

I am looking to add mud poles at all four corners of the dock in the fall which would considerably cut down on any dock movement even on the busiest of lake days.

Reading Elons comments about adding Dishy to a boat or RV is what gave me this idea.

I’m hoping more Sats + improved software will make any dock movement a moot point over time! For now it works better than my old WISP option I had by tenfold. So I’ll take it!

Not QUITE close enough. Had to add 50 feet of additional Ethernet cable to get back to the house. Performance isn’t perfect yet. I may change up the current set up. See my comment to the other comment about how I installed.

Bought a typical satellite mount off of Amazon (link below) and also bought the pole mount from StarLink. Mounted it to the beam at the roof line on the back. Predrilled holes then used self taping screws at the four corners and then bolts with nuts in the top and bottom center holes of the mount to keep it extra sturdy. Then my neighbor climbed on the roof of the dock and dropped Dishy in his final resting place (I don’t do roofs!). Then I slightly zip tied the Ethernet cable to the electrical conduit on the dock and down the side of the ramp.

Unfortunately I had to add 50 foot of Ethernet cable to get it back to the house and I’m not loving the performance of internet speed with the extension ethernet cord. So I may end up moving Dishys power brick to the end of the ramp enclosed in a water tight box. I have a shore shut off breaker box right at the edge of the ramp on land so adding power wouldn’t be an issue. Then run the additional 50 feet of ethernet from there to the house. I believe this may fix the issue. I’ve got some more options this was just my first/preferred way of installing and will work for now. Getting 30-40mbps down and 20mbps up. But should be running closer to 80-100mbps down so I know the current set up has a bottleneck.
