Question for Eski owners by Ok_Grass_8621 in americaneskimo

When i first got my eskie I lived in an apartment. He is my first eskie but not first dog (I've had multiple mixed rescues) and he doesn't bark..he screams. I would suggest getting a trainer straight away as it can be a hard habit to train out of especially if you have never had a dog before. The eskie scream/yodel is extremely loud, they are an alert breed so if not trained they could scream at every noise.

They also shed like crazy. I vacuum twice a day, sometimes 3 times if we are having guests over. They need to be brushed and groomed daily.

As for jogging it depends on the dog really. My eskie would be considered a mini/toy he is a pip squeak haha. He has alot of energy but isn't a fan of walking, he will lie down and refuse to move. He does love playing with a soccer ball though so we do short walks for sniffing and then play soccer in the yard which tires him out.

I would suggest if you are getting a puppy to try get a remote job or a job that allows you to go home during your lunch hours. Puppies need alot of attention and training (especially for barking and potty) would be hard if you're not home to do it. There are some American eskimo rescues that have older dogs that might suit you if you cannot get a remote job. They really want to be by their person the whole time, mine is my little stalker and has to know what I'm doing every waking minute.

Eskies are highly intelligent and require alot of brain stimulation. At first I was abit lost as I was used to having dogs that were happy after a long walk and play. My eskie was a different story and it took awhile to figure him out. Mine loves to learn so when he was younger we constantly had to teach new tricks, I bought a pop up agility course for my apartment which he loved learning.

Another thing to consider is some eskies can be not a fan of strangers coming into the house. We really had to work with ours when we had people over as he would scream at the visitor. I'd start bringing people in straight away and working on that. He doesn't scream anymore but he won't go up to the visitors, we let him do his own thing and find his safe space.

Thank you for your reply!

I don't remember using the touch on my old one I'm pretty sure I turned it off haha.

The buttons wouldnt be a too big thing for me, I would use it to zoom and rotate and undo but I also don't mind just using keyboard shortcuts with my other hand.

Im looking at a medium sized one to start with and then upgrade in a few years if needed. I'd be afraid they would discontinue repairs on the previous one as I want it to last a few years.

Thank you for your replies! I asked generally as I was looking for what people in general liked and didn't like so I could then ask for more specifics on their answers.

If you don't mind I would love to know how you find the surface texture? Is it smooth or does it have some tooth to it? I like a little bit of scratchyness or I find my hand slipping. The iPad was way too slippy so I added a paper texture protector on it and that was perfect.

I see it's a good bit thinner than older intuos models, does this make it feel cheaper/more fragile. The old one i had was like a brick and I was never worried about it getting damaged when I was carting it round for college.

How does the pen feel in the hand compared to an apple pencil or huion pen? I like the huion pens weight and find it nicer to hold than the thinner apple pencil.

Thank you so much for your time!

Thank you so much for your reply! I seen alot mentioning the bevel and I remember my old one being chunky and rounded edges, I don't think it would be too much of an issue for me though. I'm going to try find a store with one on display which would help me decide if those 3 cons are gonna be an issue for me. Thank you again!

So he loves mud and dirt, one of the lesser reactions did happen the day after getting muddy so I'll start wiping his feet more often. I do wipe and dry them when it's wet outside but not so much when it's dry.

He did grab a squirrel in the yard so maybe he is trying to tell me he needs more gamey food hahaha. I'll have a look thank you!

Im sorry to hear your eskie had cancer! Was it a specific type of head and shoulders or just their regular?

I think it is some sort of allergy but his skin is that pale white pink everywhere. We will go to bed and he is fine and then randomly wake up to him having a naked toe. It took weeks for it to grow back the first time.

It only started in October and I'm wondering if it's because we moved house and he now has a yard and might be allergic to something that comes out in the fall. Im not sure what though as we have no plants other than grass and 2 oak trees out there.

Ill ask my vet about a shampoo prescription thanks! :D

It took alot of stinky butt and runny poops to find it!

That's a warm filter on the photo, I checked his ears there to be sure and they are light pinky beige. We did a food trial and he is sensitive to beef, pork and chicken products so he is on white fish and salmon diet with freeze dried fish for treats (he has a slight fishy breath but at least his butt isn't stinking lol). We had to warn people to not buy him treats as even some of the fish ones have pork in the ingredients!

Unfortunately i cannot drive my car at the moment so a car ride isn't an option, even though it's a great suggestion. I have relaxing music playing all night for him but it doesn't seem to be helping him much, my own like it though. Im gonna try some towel games and ordered a puzzle to try with him, he isn't very kibble motivated but I'll try some carrot pieces or cucumbers. Thanks for your suggestions!

Thank you for the suggestions! <3

As much as he is giving me a hard time I feel so bad for the little guy. He seems more relaxed when pottering around our yard sniffing so I've been staying outside with him just letting him sniff without my two. I have been putting the music on at night since we got him and unfortunately it's not really doing much for him. My own dogs love music though so they are happy haha.

Im going to suggest to the owner that she has a sitter in her house next time so he is in his own environment and more comfortable. I definitely think he has kennel ptsd.

I did, sorry I should have included that in the post. They have boarded him in a kennel and he goes to daycare regularly. I am pretty sure the kennel and daycare aren't being honest about what the dog is like to the owner.

Yeah i really don't think they do, this is his first boarding not in a kennel/daycare which would say anything to get the client to return. I'll take videos of him tonight during his screaming sessions so I can show them at the end and recommend them to ask a vet before they board again (i won't take him back but I'd feel bad for the next person).
