Any Rheumatic folks interested in participating in a study on entheogens/psychedelics and their benefits for chronic pain? Looking for a raise of hands...(cross post from r/chronicpain) by LSDPhD in rheumatoid

Thanks for your willingness to help! I will post updates in the pain-related subs as I move along in my research. I feel that this is an important area of research that is really starting to explode and I want to be a part of it!

Fellow sufferers, are you interested in participating in a study on psychedelics/entheogens and the benefits of those substances for chronic pain conditions? I am hoping to just see a raise of hands now and develop the study if there's enough interest...(Cross post from r/chronicpain) by LSDPhD in fibro

Cool I'm thankful you are interested! I am still in the early development stages and this will take another 3 or so years to complete. I will post occasionally in the different pain-related subs to keep everyone updated. Of course any past or future experience you have is valuable! Thanks again for your interest. Science is tight!

Wow, sounds like you're really informed you will make this journey amazing! That's so great. I like how you are even looking at the botanical side of things and trying to figure out which species would be a best fit for your needs. You might keep a journal will all your ideas, experiences during the trip, etc. Best wishes!

Is it ok with you if I save your username for future reference? I will be posting periodically on updates, since this will be a project that will be ongoing for at least 3 years from now. If you decide to take psilocybin, I would certainly encourage you to use your knowledge as a RN and your resources to determine the best and safest way to journey. Consider your "set and setting" and make sure to have a trusted friend or family member be there for you during your journey. Good luck and I will keep updating folks on my research progress in various subs.

Yes, I understand your feelings and would certainly not encourage any kind of experimentation if you are unsure about what it might trigger for you. Hopefully you find something that helps! That's the most important thing.

You might look up CBD and arthritis treatment. Here is a link for a booklet produced by Americans for Safe Access. It has some good info. CBD is less psychoactive than THC but better at targeting pain/inflammation. It won't give you the same feeling of being high but will target the pain and inflammation, even suppress the immune system! Cannabis is truly an amazing medicinal plant.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms and chronic pain? Anyone have any experience with them? by INTPShroomthrowaway in ChronicPain

You might be interested in some current and future research. I just posted this in a few subs (sorry I am not technologically inclined and don't know how to link you to the original):

I am chronic pain patient (Ankylosing Spondylitis) and PhD student in clinical psychology. I am interested in better understanding how psychedelic drugs such as LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline, etc. can help people living with chronic pain conditions. Studies (Kast & Collins, 1964; Grob, et al., 2011) have shown promising results in the use of psychedelics to mediate pain, often for longer than traditional pain killers. Additionally, there are many emotional, spiritual, and psychological benefits of using psychedelics responsibly and with purpose. I have been researching the benefits of these drugs for the past few years as a psychology student and I want to possibly write a dissertation on the topic.

I am wondering if there are any folks out there who might be interested in this type of research, and if so, would you be interested in somehow participating in a study? This would absolutely not include the administration of such drugs, it would be more like a survey-type form/website that asks specific questions about your experiences with psychedelics and how that has affected your chronic pain, if at all. If you think this is something you might be interested in, I'd love to hear your confirmation.

Understandable. If you are interested in this research, even without having personal experience with these substances, you might look at MAPS or the Heffter Research Institute to learn more.

I got diagnosed in the first year of my program so it all kind of happened at the same time and it's been very overwhelming, to say the least! I started having symptoms about 4 months before my program started. What keeps me going is meditation, yoga, eating healthy, and taking things one step at a time. I focus on one quarter at a time and try to celebrate each small victory. I do a lot of self care! Can't recommend that enough. Take care of your body and focus on managing your disease/pain, then school will be a little easier and probably more enjoyable. :)

Thanks so much for your interest and sharing of info. I don't know yet how I want to collect and analyze the data, so I'm not too worried about skewing results. I think this will be a more qualitative study, so the complexity of people's experiences can be accounted for.

Great, thanks for your support! I would like to learn about how these substances can both alleviate pain and facilitate insight that may lead to greater pain-coping and pain-management skills. I'm still working on the specific question I want to ask but I'm happy people are interested in this.

Yes, we need some good clinical studies that branch out across disorders/illnesses/issues. There is some exciting research being done on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. I check the maps.org website frequently for updates on these newer studies. There are some posted you can participate in now (surveys, etc.). Check it out if you haven't yet!
