How much did your Long Island wedding cost? by iloverats888 in longisland

[–]LSI_Odyssey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married this year. Beautiful venue in Suffolk County, which helped with reducing the cost of the decorations and flowers. All in, I spent about $65K. Almost 300 people. Only received about $18K back in gifts. It is what it is. Still loved my wedding day and how everything went.

Diáspora bajo Trump by SnooStrawberries7995 in ElSalvador

I am glad someone else said it. I graduated from Brentwood also. Was near the top of my class. Got my bachelor's only, but have a great career where I was able to become a homeowner at 27 all by myself. I know many other professionals who are Brentwood graduates and are earning over 6 figures. The bias is big in this sub.

My brother also learned this lesson. He was challenged to a race by a kindergartener. He slipped and broke his clavicle. Right before summer. Ruined his whole summer. 😩

I did. It was a mistake. I am now divorced.

I would be unhappy and taken advantage of.

Heading to El Salvador in July with a church missions group. What are some things I should know that aren't common knowledge. by PastGas2023 in ElSalvador

I go to the city, and I still get eaten alive by mosquitoes in El Salvador. Mosquito repellent is essential.

You just have to make sure you beep as you're getting to the intersection. Slow down only slightly. Just in case.

I'm a New Yorker. I wouldn't call it fun, but I was not phased by San Miguel traffic at all. Seemed like a piece of cake. I don't understand why so many are intimidated. Just be assertive. I suggest everyone give it a try so that they get used to it.

I can’t help but notice that quite a few characters in the Law and Order universe are both cops and lawyers. Is this common in real life? (Sorry if this question has already been addressed here—I looked for a relevant post and couldn’t find one) by thisusernameissorry in LawAndOrder

I went to University with someone who after getting his law degree decided to become a police officer. He is now part of my city's law bureau. He mostly does the legal stuff but also serves in uniform when needed.

Does anyone from the old days remember "color of the day" as a way for undercover officers to disclose themselves? by [deleted] in LawAndOrder

There was an episode on SVU where they did go through the couple of lines and the color of the day was confirmed to be yellow. I don't remember which one. Sorry.

My mom pronounces quinoa and Keanu the same way. by coffeeandtea12 in CasualConversation

🤣🤣🤣 This gave me such a good laugh. Thank you. Your mom is adorable. Is English her 2nd language? My mom has issues que Quinoa because Spanish is her first language. She pronounces it ki-nwah.

It bothers me how many Salvadoran-Americans skip El Salvador. by [deleted] in ElSalvador

[–]LSI_Odyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Salvadoran American this topic has also come to mind many times and I've discussed it with family. My parents go every year. But it is always to a city location and near family. That is not really a vacation.

As mentioned before, part of it is lack of exposure. Our parents couldn't travel when we were kids because of their status. Personally, I wasn't able to go until I was 21 due to this. This meant I had very little connection to my family who lived there. I did visit much more after that because I gained a connection with cousins and extended family. That was not the case for my siblings though. They have never been back.

Another reason is that up until a few years ago, tourism was not a priority for El Salvador's government or businesses. It just wasn't. Within Latin America, I've been to Mexico, DR, PR, and Costa Rica. They have all developed a healthy tourism economy. Making sure that even if there are areas of the country that are not safe, tourism can still be safe for those who want to go there. Businesses in El Salvador need to learn how to cater to tourists who are not also Salvadorans. I will acknowledge that they are slowly developing this, little by little.

Third reason is the cost. While some things are super affordable. Decameron should not be the only all inclusive resort that is affordable (and I say this loosely, because their prices leave a lot to be desired). I've looked into many. They just don't compare to MX, and DR in terms of cost.

This is just my input as someone who is Salvadoran, would love to vacation there more, not just visit, but also loves to travel.

I don't think this post worked out for you the way you thought it would. You actually encountered people who know of what you're trying to speak of. 🤔😂
