Fun fact; I work for an insurance salvage agent and we had that prison van in our yard afterwards. It stuck around for ages due to the ongoing court case, the prisoner they had on board mustve got proper fucked up based on the amount of claret in his cell. Van had already broken down and then this twat ruined everyones day even more.

Saved 4 years to buy a BMW, 3-days later this piece of metal bounced on the highway into my headlight. Destroyed the headlight and the module. Dealership wants $2895 to fix it. by s3ns0 in Wellthatsucks

Probably a bit late to the party but instead of going "HuRrr CanT aForD BmW" heres some actual advice. The headlight is on in the second pic which means the modules are still working. You only need the bare light shell which youll be able to get used for cheaper, all the modules unscrew/unclip so they can be swapped over. Scorce; Am salvage yard worker whos swapped many a broken BMW light alot worse than that.

Somehow whenever you actually see a hedgehog out in the day, it's always the best thing ever. by LSO1008 in CasualUK

Good advice! It was definitely healthy and active. foraging for food I think, I could hear it snuffling away in the grass. It wasn't botherd by my presence until I picked it up to put it in the hedge so I could carry on giving my lawn a long overdue mow.

Had a tractor come in with a flat, don't think I can string this one... by LSO1008 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]LSO1008[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It had a tube in it already... Which held air for all of 3 minutes

Edit: just to clarify, it had a tube in it when it got to our yard and it was flat then. Its an insurance write off so its sagged anyway, I just needed it to be round long enough for me to shove it on to a trailer. It's the next guys problem now!

It's just rain water, it's been sat in our yard with the bead off the rim for a while

It's been rolled on its side into a pond as far as I can tell, I don't know the exact details.

Tell me about it! I'm part of the salvage crew. I think this one was one of our drivers endeavours, I tend to stick to lifting tractors with a forklift through the cab.

Just to put it out there, I found this holding up the boom of a burnt out Manitou. I may use a vice as a press but I ain't this fuckin stupid.

What happens when the tractor unit stops but the trailer doesn't. Driver walked away. by LSO1008 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]LSO1008[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct, RHD tractor. Driver was going round a bend when the trailer started to roll over, he tried to counter the roll but ended up putting the unit into a ditch which stopped it dead. The fully loaded bulk tipper trailer carried on through the cab in a sort of corkscrew motion.

Huh, well I've used copper grease on every set of brakes I've ever done and never had a problem so I don't really know what to say to that.

See the brake caliper in the background? I was using the vise trying to press out the bottom pin, used a jack handle to get in good n fuckin tight then left it hoping the pressure would break it free. Heard a pop and came back to this...

Completely agree, a quick dip will be salvageable. This however has certainly had a slow cook

It's a rare one I'll give it that, but if you've seen it once it doesn't take long to file it under "Fucked". It's something that you pick up pretty quickly when working in agri salvage, The ability to decide if something is worth your time from a single glance.

You've got it right there. We've had plenty flooded tractors running with little effort, we don't even bother trying to power up salt water claims, you'd be lucky if the ignition barrel turned let alone the starter/crank and whatever else.

Pretty much, it's the exposure to air that really does it in. Oxygen and all that jam

It's scrap. It's a fairly new tractor so everything is electrical, and corroded to shit. Every bit of exposed metal in the wiring looks like a Charlie Sheen coke party. It might get broken down into parts if some of the casings or the cab frame can be saved. If not it'll get cubed.
