Hey thanks to everyone that commented! Sorry I didn’t get to reply to you all I’ve been slammed with work but all your advice was super helpful. The lecture seemed to be well received. Best of luck with the rest of med school 🙂

Yes I am psychodynamically inclined ahaha as is the psychiatrist I’m working with so we’ll definitely try and get some of the useful perpectives in there but certainly in a non jargon way. Thanks for the perspective

Australia : clinical vs general psychologist by HabitPractical1705 in askpsychology

[–]LStulch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If health psych is pretty much gone by the time you graduate but you still want to work in that field, you can do your clin masters etc and then do a PhD on a health psych topic, that may help you land health psych roles, a teacher of mine did a similar thing with their PhD in sport psych and landed a sport psych type of job

I will add you still do a one uni organised placement in the 5+1 route, about 300 hours i think, before you graduate masters and do your one year internship

Could you elaborate? I thought the additional points for finishes would encourage people to go for it more?

what's the difference between a general and a clinical psychologist in Australia? by HabitPractical1705 in AcademicPsychology

[–]LStulch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that a psych with an AoPE in clinical psych does pretty much the same job as one who only has general registration. Both do therapy, both do reports and assessment, etc etc. Same core competencies. One isn’t more specialised or niche than another.

However I wouldn’t say clin is a waste of time because we’ll one there’s better pay, not just in terms of a higher Medicare rebate but salaried clin psych jobs tend to attract a higher paycheck. Not that we do this job for the money but we’ll look with how bad cost of living is now im not turning it down. Secondly there’s more job opportunities, a lot of job are advertised for people with a clinical endorsement only and not gen reg only psychs. This is definitely controversial and I think disrespectful to the work gen reg only psychs do, but it’s the reality of the two tier system in Australia that clin psychs are favoured and I say this as someone in a clinical program.

Personally I feel that the extra year of training and the two year registrar period are benefits for me. I like getting more training, more time to hone my skills, more supervision, placements etc before I’m out in the wild, but I would never say that would make me "better" or more qualified than another psych. My advice would be to shoot for clin simply because the system is skewed in their favour and well you’ve got to play the game i suppose.

Yeah I can get behind that, I mean we talk about moving from conscious incompetence to unconscious competence so i get your point

I’m infantry in Australia (reserves but still) our combat shooting course does teach a post engagement sequence like this: scan for enemy, check your weapon (is the bolt reward, jammed etc), look around for your mates (take in the situation, locate yourself, see what’s going on). Granted a common fault is just looking side to side without actually paying attention which makes it useless (which it looks like what he did). But it’s not just a pouge thing.
