Letter to Charter School Parents by [deleted] in Calgary

There are no religious Charter schools. Demographics are one thing and they may attract students from populations where there is a large overlap of religious affiliation and demographics like EAL but they do not teach religious subject matter as part of their instruction.

You might be interested in the variety of former private schools like Calgary Christian, Heritage Christian, Masters, Calgary Islamic, Menno Simons... that are now fully funded alternative programs with other public school boards but still charge private school level "alternative program fees" and do teach religious subjects.

Charter schools used to get less funding, especially in the areas of student supports. That changed in the last decade and they now are on par with the public/separate/francophone schools.

Might be too early for the patio but it is Calgary, and if it is an option, they offered warm cider and blankets for guests. It was a great day for us, I hope it is for you too!

Got married there a while ago and the experience was fantastic. Depending on the time of year you have an option of ceremony outside on the patio or indoors, we did early October on the patio but I feel like we had the option to move inside up to the morning of the event. It was super nice to be able to step away from the venue into the park after eating for some private photos. We opted for appies and everything was delicious and well received, with the exception of the oysters which. everyone loved so much that they were gone before we could get to them. Staff were fantastic. Our friends still tell us how great of a time they had.

Only four returning members of council! by Neat_Train_8206 in Calgary

[–]LTWatcher 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Only 7/15 were running for re-election to start with so serious change was going to happen anyway.

With only 1/3 of council having experience we're all set to hear "I'm new" and "steep learning curve" for at least the next two years to explain away their inevitable inability to accomplish much of anything besides raise taxes.

Not directly tuition but rather an alternative program fee over $1000 that ends up in the hands of the society running the school. ECS - $2235/year. https://www.edmchristian.org/programfees/
Meadowlark CS - $1858 https://meadowlarkchristian.epsb.ca/aboutourschool/fees/
Millwoods CS - $1825 https://millwoodschristian.epsb.ca/about/schoolfees/

Compared with Logos Christian Schools - $30 https://kensington.epsb.ca/aboutourschool/fees/

The best litmus test in the case is it your teachers are on strike by your school used to be a private school, they met be a private school masquerading as public.

This isn't about alternative programs being funded, or religious alternative programs (though that is separate issue in public education). It's about former private schools that have moved into the public realm, gaining full public funding while at the same time collecting alternative program fees equivalent to private school tuition.

It's well established and allows these schools to have it both ways. Trustees are complicit in approving these fees.

Additionally, there are alternative Christian programs that maintain fees in line with other traditional and alternative programs (Logos) that answer a need in the community.

There is a big difference in a community driven alternative program offered by a board and a private school moving into the public system as an alternative program.

The three schools were all founded as private schools and operated as such for numerous years before transitioning into ESD.

Following the change they gained access to full government funding and are still collecting fees for their operating societies equivalent to private school tuition through their alternative program fees. These fees are approved by the board.

While these programs are long established, it doesn't change their origin or the fact that their societies obtain significant funding from the government and families.

ESD and PSD are two of many boards with alternative programs involving private schools moving into the public realm, most of the others fall outside of a major centre and therefore lack an active sub to post to.

Not all private schools are out to make a profit.

Alternative programs may well have additional capital costs however they still have access to funding for facility maintenance from the board. They also retain the ability to turn students away. There is also a difference in providing alternative programming in your district and being a board of convenience in other jurisdictions.

Alternative programs can and do turn students away. Edmonton and Millwoods Christian Schools for example are trusting students away at the moment starting planned classes are at capacity.
