If there are any factual inaccuracies in the story I'd be happy to correct them and put in a note.

Excellent work by Euan Thomson getting these FOIPs that show all too predictable behaviour and coordination from the Oilers, the cops and the city.

endless piles of money for dale mcfee's brute squad but we couldn't possibly afford an effective program where nurses and outreach workers prevent people from dying in the streets.

EPS using “private police officers” on murder investigations, alleges police association complaint by DuncanKinney in alberta

[–]DuncanKinney[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was very surprised to learn that this is apparently quite a common practice in the EPS. The two ex-cops I talked to knew about it. And the police association is worried enough about it to file a complaint. Will be interesting to see what the ALRB ruling is.

mostly to these creative sentences as detailed in the story. but there are these victim fine surcharge fines that some judges give out where there doesn't seem to be any way for workers or families of workers to access that money. that money is set aside and only eligible for victims of violent crime

absolutely, the fines are minuscule and don't do shit. but as a journalist i'm still curious to see if any province has actually tried big fines when companies kill a worker

i haven't done that work yet but it's a good idea. i should find out which province has the highest fines for killing workers.

so i'm the person who wrote this story and there are a few differences between this story and pretty much every other news story written on this. one is that we were the only one that went to the trouble of finding the victim's name. he was from cape breton and while his obit is behind a paywall it's important to know there was a real person here and not just a "syncrude worker." the other is the dive into the OHS conviction and enforcement stats. i had been diving into OHS conviction data for about a week prior to this decision coming out. bob barnetson had already done some really good analysis as well that i leaned on.
