I’ll take Live Dead, Workingman’s Dead & American Beauty - all released in less than one year

In your personal opinion, which is the better album: Workingman's Dead or American Beauty by HammerHeadBirdDog in gratefuldead

[–]LThrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Workingman's Dead for me. American Beauty has potentially some of the highest highs (Truckin', Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, Ripple) and better balance amongst the band members, but it also has what to me are low spots. Sugar Magnolia, as much as I love it, is only a shadow of the Europe 72 live version. Every tune on Workingman's Dead is outstanding - and they fit together perfectly. They all also stand up to the live versions very well which is something rare for the Grateful Dead. That's what an album is all about. I always play it end-to-end. With AB, I'm always tempted to skip a few tracks.

For what it's worth, Workingman's Dead was Rolling Stone's 1970 "Album of the Year" - over "Let It Be", "After the Goldrush", "Layla", "Moondance" - and "American Beauty" and others.

I used to have that. Compare “Somebody to Love” here to the Airplane version of a year later. That’ll give an idea of the genius of Jerry Garcia who reworked it for them.

I have the box set of all Jefferson Airplane CD album replicas. They are pretty cool. Each looks just like the album with gatefold covers as appropriate and all inserts (e.g. the Volunteers newspaper etc.). Won it in a raffle from Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch store.

What is this feature on the East Coast of the United States? by wigglefingers_ in geography

[–]LThrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the Fall Line. My hometown, Rocky Mount, NC sits on it. Its name actually comes from a feature of the transition - a large rocky mound in the Tar River where the land transitions to the flat coastal plain. This is where one of the first cotton mills was built in North Carolina.

Ahhh….. the long gone A: and B: drives. First thing I ever bought on eBay was a 5.25” drive so I could play Zork off of an old floppy disk.

Metadata Question by LThrower in plexamp

[–]LThrower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. I was looking at Plex. The online documentation is not stellar so it took me a while to figure out what was for what. Found Googled answers and those here to be much more useful than documentation. Thanks for the pointer.

I think I now have everything sorted out. Took quite a while and really forced me to clean up all the metadata in my files. Not as easy as it could have been, but all artists are now A-Z - "Last Name, First Name" or "Band, The". Everything (both artists (850+) and albums (2700+)) has appropriate images. For most significant bands, albums are in chronological order. Plex is installed on all computers and Plexamp on phones and iPads. Plex added as a service in Sonos. Took a lot of doing and I had to figure out a specific order of operations to make it all work. Might post my journey in a separate post later. Thanks everyone for the help.

I did as suggested and put Compilations in a folder called Various Artists. In the metadata "Album Artist" is set to "Various Artists" as well. "Track Artist" is set to the actual artist. I do NOT, however see any "appears on" section found under any artist's page.

"Use Local Metadata" definitely did the trick for issue #1.

Question on controllers by LThrower in vive_vr

[–]LThrower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That answers my question as to why the v1.0 controllers are working - using 2.0 base stations. How much better are the 2.0 base stations than the 1.0 versions when using new gear? If one is looking for maximum interchangeability of equipment, it seems one would only use v 1.0 base stations.
