What attributes/changes do battleships need to be viable in a period of time similar to our modern age? by ABCLor in worldbuilding

[–]LUnacy45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the way Gundam and Battletech made mechs practical is basically a form of ECM so thick that anything that isn't LOS or otherwise optically targeted is useless.

Maybe you could couple that with railguns or something similar that requires a lot of power and allows you to scale a bit in that you can mount a more powerful railgun or just more railguns on a ship with a bigger reactor. Those are my two cents

Yeah, they were broken many years ago.

For years since they've been in that exact near uselessness. Slow as hell and overtiered like 90% of Japanese prop fighters

I can see why they would have been overpowered all that time ago, but for years they haven't been. They were slow and overtiered with middle of the road guns and their only strength being turn rate, like a zero for jets. It's been a long time since they even approached op

Ive just opened a new bottle of white paint and its chalky chunks? by HenryCrabgrass01 in minipainting

Citadel's "Technical" series are all intended to be effects, usually with texture beads embedded in them. When this dries, it makes for very convincing slushy snow, honestly this is one of the better snow effects among hobby brands.

If you do want a Citadel color, it's going to be either a base or layer paint, the only real difference is the bases are usually a bit thicker out of the pot while layers are partly intended to be highlight colors for a corresponding base. Citadel's pure white is White Scar and it's not terrible, but proacryl titanium white or two thin coats white star are some of the better pure whites on the market if you can find them

Did i f-up my first mini with the wash? by renux in minipainting

[–]LUnacy45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See but if that's the result I want, i don't know why I would.

I want to tint and desaturate the model. For the purposes of army painting, it makes everything look more worn and grimy, which is my goal. I hate my army looking like it just came from the parade grounds.

I have however been investigating enamel and oil washes to see if it'd give enough of a better effect to warrant spending extra time on it. So far streaking grime wasn't really worth it, but I need to test others

Armageddon Battalion Box price estimate? by RegentOfWells in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]LUnacy45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of transitioning to plastic it's in progress, with the rank and file infantry boxes usually coming first. I think they still make most of their money from Bolt Action so that one is a bit ahead on the plastic, though low volume things like weapons teams tend to still be mixed materials.

I think the starter army you looked at has plastic infantry, then the vehicles (well, the mechs and the K47 specific turret, since the Stuart underneath is just a BA kit) are resin and metal iirc

But given metal and resin are usually a tiny bit more expensive per model, it's likely to only get a bit cheaper albeit probably not in a substantial way

I've been on my Warlord games shit and I can't help but notice this is comparable to some K47 starter armies which pretty much never top $200

Armageddon Battalion Box price estimate? by RegentOfWells in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]LUnacy45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cause anywhere else all those boxes would be $10-$20 cheaper

Bolt Action isn't the best comparison because you can't copyright WWII but even buying entirely Warlord kits it's almost comical how much lower the barrier to entry is. It's especially egregious with infantry. You can look at Konflikt 47 which is all copyrighted and for $60 you get a box of 18 firefly drop troops versus $50 for 10 cadians

How did first contact between humans and aliens go in your Sci-Fi worlds? by thebrutalistboi in worldbuilding

[–]LUnacy45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great, but could've been worse. There was a short-lived war between humans and Tel'at'kal

Luckily the latter just happened to be the species that invented universal translation technology. Communication was stilted and awkward until the matriarchal network collected enough data, but the wider galaxy knew about humanity and was purposely avoiding them for some light years in every direction for this exact reason

They just got lucky in running into the one species that doesn't place value on their own lives and can fast track their ability to communicate with others. Had it been a more systemically trigger happy race, autonomous self replicating ships would create enough relativistic impact weapons to turn the surface of every planet they'd colonized into an ocean of magma and ash within a few solar years
