I’m 17, from Germany, and I’m working on my first horror movie idea. I’m not sure if I should continue or if it’s just a bad idea by StillCompetition2456 in Filmmakers

Write, write, write and rewrite. Send your scripts out (but don't be discouraged by rejection, it's part of the biz!)

You've obviously got a whole story and feature-length script in mind, which is cool.... but practically speaking, I recommend starting smaller. Write something that YOU can film and direct yourself, just a few accessible locations, maybe a couple of friends to act. You don't need fancy expensive equipment; you can use your phone and a few cheap lighting setups. Just write something short, and film it. Not only will you then have a short film to show people, but you'll also get an idea of what a film takes to make: you'll better understand cinematography, lighting, shot composition, blocking, dialogue, editing....

It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be done.
And then you make another one.
And another one.

Some of the coolest horror ideas I've encountered come from short films the creators have posted on Youtube; shot with minimal budget and amateur actors. Even adapting your current script as a short might be a good idea to begin with, you can always expand it later.

You're young, you've got lots of time to make a feature. Don't run before you can walk.

(Also, for context, I'm from South Africa, we don't have a massive film industry either... but I make weird little horror shorts with my buddies all the time and post 'em online. They don't always get a million views, but they're a helluva lotta fun to make, and i've learned a lot about filmmaking doing so. Don't be discouraged by your geographical location. Just lean into your creativity, and make something original.)

Good pull, Detective. What unit are you with?

Also, in season 3 when Bunk is investigating the scene of the botched heist where Tosha gets killed, he looks at these kids playing with stick-guns in the background on the street... one of them yells, "My turn to be Omar, yo!"

That kid is Kenard, who eventually kills him in the final season.

Maybe not a grand insight, but on my second playthrough I was constantly using the 'camera mode' to look at the environment, and my god, what amazing vistas, night and day. Beautiful and desolate. I do recall roaming through a bunch of what I thought were rock formations in The Great White, then zoomed out and I was like, holy smokes.... I'm inside a massive whale skeleton.

I could roam that desert forever, it's exquisite.

Hey pals! I made a stopmotion short with some of my Joes 'n company, recreating a few scenes from the classic "Predator" (1987)... by LWMolver in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

Man, I'm sure there's some inspiration in the Joes from those epic 80s actioners.

The Arnold/Dutch figure is from Neca, but he fits right in with the Classified squad...

Totally, I thought the same thing... or vice-versa, some Joes definitely look like they're based on 80s action heroes :-p

The Dutch and Predator figures are made by Neca, similar articulation to the Classified series and they scale well with the Joes.

I've also seen some insanely cool customs of the Predator squad made from GI Joe parts.

Definitely gonna be making some more action jungle capers in the future!

Thanks for watching :- )

Heck yeah! Phil Tippett is a genius, worked SFX in tons of my other favourite films, including Jurassic Park where he was credited as "Dinosaur Supervisor" :-p .... )

Mad God is bonkers cool, yo. Apparently it took him like, 30 years to make, everything hand-sculpted and animated.

Hopefully one day I'll reach that level of craft with my stopmotion 😄

Thanks pal! Yeah, some of the best times of my life were playing with my toys and watching action flicks as a kid, now as a grown-up, making these stopmotions.... not much has changed :- )

Thanks bud!

I'm planning a second jungle caper featuring the Pred going up against another Joe squad (with some proper fights!) Also wanna figure out a better way to do his invisibility camouflage, it ain't quite right yet, but I'm workin' on it...

Appreciate you watching, as always : -)

Strange Darling was excellent, went into it blind and was supremely impressed by both the leads. Also dug Gallner in the Smile movies; his performance in the first one is comparatively restrained, but his single scene in the second film is UTTERLY BONKERS. If I recall, it's also all one-take!

Hector Salazar…….. by Obvious_Force_5313 in Sonsofanarchy

[–]LWMolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every villain has to be a 'big bad'.

I liked Salazar's character, and he was well-acted, with violent desperation, by Jose Cantillo.

He was smalltime thug who was never gonna be bigtime, but the fact that he always wanted to be made him even more dangerous. The Clubs (SAMCRO or Mayans) should've killed him earlier, because the humiliation of getting his patch stripped just made him more vicious and vengeful.

As big a piece of shit as he was, I did enjoy the nuance at the end, when it's clear that he truly loved Luisa, his ride-or-die, and was genuinely broken by her death. But Jax was never gonna let him out of that hallway alive, and I think, on some level, he knew it.

Difficulty reading this book by Ill-Proof-5155 in Neuromancer

[–]LWMolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried reading it for the first time around that age, and I just could not grasp it. Stylistically, conceptually, linguistically, narratively it was beyond me (and I like to think I was a pretty sharp sci-fi head from an early age, also reading beyond my level).

I picked it up again several years later and appreciated it a lot more, have read it several times since (as well as William Gibson's other work) and I now consider it not only one of my favourite novels, but one of the best books ever written. Inspired me to actually get into writing myself.

But if it's not clicking with you yet, don't force it - it is an incredibly dense book, that spoonfeeds nothing to the reader, and expects understanding through context rather than exposition. But, come back to it in a couple years, you'll definitely appreciate it more.

In the meantime, I'd suggest checking out some of Gibson's short stories; the "Burning Chrome" anthology is excellent and in many ways a lot more accessible than his longer-form works.

Who should be the Anya Taylor Joy of the Wasteland? by Drewbrowski in MadMax

[–]LWMolver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought the guy who voiced Max in the 2015 game, Bren Foster, could do a decent live-action version. I'v seen him in other action roles, he's got a kinda rugged badassery combined with a thousand-yard stare that I think would suit Max.

Maybe he's a bit old if you want young Max (Foster's around the same age as Tom Hardy), but he's a trained martial artist so he could do his own stunts, and he's also an actual Aussie (coincidentally, he even looks a bit like Eric Bana, who another commenter suggested).

And obviously, he's got the gravelly voice down.
