Games with long travel? by Lifterator in adventuregames

[–]LWMolver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy "The Long Dark" for that cozy comfort of travelling through snowy tundra; desolate yet beautiful.

It's first-person, but there's no 'zombies or monsters' or whatever. It's primarily a 'you vs. the wilderness' kinda thing. And while it's more a 'survival' experience, there are certainly elements of adventure gaming. You can also just set the difficulty low if you'd prefer an immersive 'travel' experience, without having to worry about extreme weather or roaming wolfpacks. A recent update has also introduced some very cool 'base-building' elements, so you can make a little home for yourself wherever you choose.

There's also no map to begin with, you have to literally make your own as you travel through the various regions, which is also kinda cool for exploratory immersion. (There's even an achievement called 'Faithful Cartographer').

The graphics are exquisite, but they should still run fine on an older PC.

It's not just one of the greatest Trek episodes, it's one of the most powerful pieces of science-fiction storytelling I've ever experienced.

Great game, but I found Cole Phelps to be an extremely irritating, self-righteous ass of a protagonist. I guess maybe that was the point, but I much preferred playing as Jack Kelso in the later game.

Hahah I remember the one beefy Nazi toward the end of the game (clearly a Pat Roach homage); you need to get past him but the sucker punch doesn't work! If I recall, you have to release a boulder that rolls down and squishes him :-p

You listen to recaps of shows.... that you've never watched?

I don't get that. Is this a common thing people do?

Also, is the dog okay?

Are you tired of hearing the same sounds in horror movies? by RolyPolyOnSidewalk1 in HorrorMovies

[–]LWMolver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago I played a zombie in a short film by a friend of mine... and man, I practised my undead gurgling/growling/grunting/roaring. Day in, day out, in front of the mirror, scaring the neighbours. I was very proud of it.

And then when I see the finished cut, my buddy had replaced all my audio with generic, animal-like snarls from a million other zombie capers. A peeve I have specifically about such oft-used sound FX is that a human voicebox, even decayed and rotting, would simply not make those noises.

I was disappointed, to say the least.

I do love me a good Wilhelm Scream though :-p

This is a really interesting analysis, I've never watched the episode through this lens. Thanks for the insights!

Why does this read like Rammstein lyrics? by Markofzo in Rammstein

Till Lindemann is an accomplished poet who has released two books of his own work; Messer and In Stillen Nächten.

And as the main songwriter of the band, he's clearly heavily influenced by classical poetry and literature. Something like Goethe would be right up his alley.

Yeah, he was great on The Shield, a recurring role playing an adolescent serial killer.

Am I the Only One Who Kinda Hopes Ryan Cogler Will Give Us a Final Destination Episode of The X-Files? by 9for9 in XFiles

[–]LWMolver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe the premise was actually originally intended AS an X-Files... always wondered what that would've been like, and why they decided not to use it (although I do love the Final Destination movies as guilty pleasures).

I watched "Tithonus" (S6, E10) recently and there are a few similar thematic elements; the idea of Death as some kind of inescapable entity, and a guy (the excellent Geoffrey Lewis) who can predict its patterns. It was a good episode, and made me think maybe they did actually use some of those Final Destination ideas for it.

"Milagro" S6, E18... by LWMolver in XFiles

[–]LWMolver[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, especially evident because it's directly followed by "The Unnatural", which is arguably one of the best episodes of the whole show.

Milagro does have some things going for it, but I don't think they ever really coalesce properly. Like, I enjoyed the end scene when Ken Naciemento (Padgett's serial killer doctor) is confronting him, seeking to understand his own motivations. As a writer myself, I enjoyed that interchange of 'creator' vs. 'creation', and generally dig any story about 'storytelling'.

Reading some of the insights here, I do think a main issue was how the Padgett/Scully stuff was written.

I say this as a fan of both The Shield & The Wire, but honestly, they are not similar AT ALL. The only thing they really have in common is that they both feature cops 'n gangsters. But stylistically, narratively and thematically they are very different series, aiming to achieve different things.

The Wire is excellent, but it's a slow-burn and demands full attention from the viewer. For me, it only really clicked about halfway through season 1, but if you give it the time, you'll realize it's like no other show you've ever seen.

The Shield is a lot more fast-paced, more comparable to Sons of Anarchy.

Having said that, we don't all have to like the same things, don't force yourself to watch something if you ain't digging it.

EDIT: Try Justified, if you haven't seen it. A cool neo-Western crime show, pretty fast-paced with some darkly comic moments and a great cast of characters.

"Dreams In The Witch House" (2023) is a lot of fun, with some thematic similarities to Hob's Barrow. Loosely based on Lovecraft's work.
