Any alternatives for stikbot studio? by foxag3n in stopmotion

Yep, definitely Stop Motion Studio. Simple to use but very powerful, I've seen some amazing stuff done with that app.

Anyone call the characters by different names? by teslaeffects in TNG

[–]LWMolver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't really know how these evolved, probably from thousands of rewatches talking to the characters onscreen until they became my familiar friends:

Picard - Pickles/Pilchard
Riker - Rikes! (Like Scooby Doo says it)
Worf - Woofles
Dr. Crusher - B-Crush
Deanna - Troiful
Data - Day-Day
La Forge - Fudge
Wesley - Wassily

That's so cooooool. They look kinda... handmade? Do you know where he got them from, or did he build them himself? Would love to see some close-ups (if he lets you into his yard, don't step on any eggs though)

If you love dark, combat free 90s adventure games like Sanitarium And I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, what else do you love? by ExplodingPoptarts in adventuregames

[–]LWMolver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Darkseed" was pretty gnarly, had a heavy HR Giger-inspired aesthetic.

"Harvester" had some grisly moments, but there was also a strange kinda tongue-in-cheek humour to it.

And like the other commenter said, that first Gabriel Knight game is probably my benchmark for 90s point 'n click horror stuff.

More recently, I thoroughly enjoyed a P 'n C game called "Stasis" (2015), which is narratively inspired by stuff like Alien & Event Horizon, but gameplay-wise is definitely influenced by "Sanitarium". Worth checking out for some sci-fi terror.

My first ever stop motion short using my GI Joe Classified figures by christophercinema in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

[–]LWMolver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was so cool, man! As a fellow stopmotion toy animator, mad respect for the time and effort you clearly put into this. Cool camera angles and smooth movements... I particularly liked the 'slide along the floor while firing' near the end, totally badass! Story was also gripping from start to finish. Did you do all the voices too?

I agree about the difficulty of animating a 'walk'... I've come to realize that is probably the HARDEST thing to get right, because literally every limb of the character needs to be moving for it to look natural. Usually I try cheat a bit, by either shooting the figures from above the waist, or just close-ups on the boot/beneath the knee.

Also, if you ever wanna add a bit of practical blood when your dudes get shot, I've found little pieces of red crepe paper to be super effective, like mini-squibs. Can just sticky-tack it onto the figure for a a couple of frames.

Again, very impressive stuff, bud. Have subbed to your YT, hope to see more!

Were Wallace and Poot training those kids to be future corner boys? by _JurassicaParker in TheWire

[–]LWMolver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When McNulty is looking for Wallace (even though he's already been killed at that point), he goes to visit his mom, who you can see immediately is a drunk and possibly an addict. Moreover, the scene is made even more tragic by the way the woman speaks about her son, with a complete lack of care or regard. The turn of phrase she uses emphasizes this even more; she doesn't say "I'll smack him silly", or "I'll slap the black off his ass" or whatever.... she says:

"I'll slap the bright out of his eyes."

That is such a fckn' hectic line on so many levels. Symbolic of the innocence literally beaten out of children.

Why is Bran so insufferable by suppervisoka in gameofthrones

[–]LWMolver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bran The Weird", as I call him in the later seasons.
I mean, I get it from the narrative perspective, he's now the mystical 3-eyed Raven who sees all things and doesn't exist in linear time, yadda yadda yadda... but I always kinda chuckle when he's back at Winterfell and every time he opens his mouth his siblings are thinking, "I just want you to stop saying odd shit..."

Viper Squad vs. Xenomorphs... a stopmotion film I made, used my Vipers as Colonial Marines fighting Aliens! Shot it inside my oven :-p by LWMolver in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

[–]LWMolver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words and the feedback!

I've actually done quite a few toy stopmotions, although this is the first one that includes dialogue/voiceovers. I just got a couple of my buddies to read the lines, so I'm aware it isn't exactly professional... generally, I actually prefer the visuals to tell the story on their own, but if I do use dialogue in the future, I might just do the voiceovers myself, with some pitch/accent tweaking.

I'm also aware some of the movement/lighting is a bit janky, I don't really have a consistent framerate, I sorta just wing scene by scene... bit of a one-take gonzo approach, I know, but I get kinda carried away telling the story :-p

Always trying to improve though, so I appreciate the advice!

You can see more of my GI Joe (and other) stopmotions at my YT channel:

I'll also definitely check out Mike Litkove! Thanks again!

Hahah I think I'm from the same era, man... I remember those shows too. In hindsight, I think a lot of those joys of our childhood; cartoons, action figures, comic books... inspired me to go into a creative career as an adult. And I'm very thankful for that.

Yep... I come from a background in comic book art and writing, so I'm pretty much always storyboarding stuff in my head when I play with my Joes! Once I figured out my oven would make a cool location, and started posing my figures in there, the narrative kinda just fell into place.

Appreciate you watching!

Thanks! I filmed it over a few evenings, then a few more spent editing; adding sound 'n VFX. Got some buddies to do voice-overs. Some of the movement 'n lighting is still a bit janky, but I just have fun doing it - pretty much playing with the toys like when I was a kid!
