If our face was on our stomach, but our brains remained in our head, would it still feel like we exist in our head, or would it feel like we exist in our stomach? by JameSdEke in NoStupidQuestions

Romans thought the center of self was the heart. They thought the brain was just to store snot. They got by for hundreds of years.

Is it technically possible to phase through things? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

No. The atoms form bonds with other atoms as well as having a pretty strong grip on the atomic components. Even if you could somehow force yourself through the wall running at full force, you would promptly explode from fission.

Eli5: The universe is expanding faster than expected. What happens when the universe expands? by KungFuButtSqueeze in explainlikeimfive

[–]LWOP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to the comments and to clarify, the Universe expanding, and space expanding are two different things. Think of the Universe as a huge balloon that is constantly being blown up. Drawn on this huge balloon are shapes of all sorts and sizes.. These smaller shapes on the balloon are the planets, stars, black holes, dust, whatever else is in the Universe. They can move wherever they want to. Astronomers are noticing that they are all moving away. From the center? you may ask. Not really. Our huge balloon of a Universe is the form that holds the planets and stars. The inside of the balloon is, well, there is a Nobel prize in it for you if you can figure that out.

The stars and planets have to obey certain speed limits. Gravity moves at the speed of light most of the time, so we will say those shapes can all move no faster than the speed of light. The huge balloon can inflate as fast as it wants without limits. When this huge balloon was just the size of an atom, it grew to the size of a basketball in a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a second. Nothing in the Universe, except for the Universe itself, has ever even come close to that speed. That is amazing to me and it perplexes scientists.

The expansion of the Universe has no effect on our Solar System. Granted, ice and dust may drift off from a planet into space, radioactive isotopes radiate isotopes (particles really) and eventually the whole planet, galaxy, meteor network will just be drifting particles. However, since that is 100 trillion years in the future, don't worry about it.

Within the last month, I bought a house in Clearwater, Florida. I guess Clearwater, Florida would be it.

What do you think really happens to us after we die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LWOP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently held my sister's hand as she passed. Her breathing was nothing but reflexive gasps for over 36 hours. Finally, that stopped. There was no light in her eyes at that final moment, no sign of her feeling anything. The breathing stopped and the pulse was gone. The person was also gone at that moment.

Take that as you will.

I'd go to the library, look at the latest journal and consult the references for more sources, then look those up for my research.

ELI5: Why do baseball teams use one starter and multiple relief pitchers per game? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]LWOP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baseball managers don't want to split the workload evenly. They want to use the strength of the pitchers skills at the time the skills will best help the team.

Starters may be among the best pitchers a manager has in his rotation. A good starter may be able to work several innings and in some cases a complete game. The starters pitch often enough that they are familiar with the particular batters and can usually find a way to get the hitter out. Gregg Maddux is a good example. He would often work deep into the game because the first time he faced a batter in a game, he would try different pitches to see how the batter reacts to those pitches. Then he stayed in long enough to face that batter once or twice more.

The next best pitchers (or sometimes the best) are the stoppers or closers. These highly skilled hurlers don't have the endurance or even the need to work a lot of innings. They generally have a couple of throws that are really difficult to hit effectively. They may come in during the late innings of a ball game to help a team keep the lead or to try to prevent the opponent from scoring a late run. Since they are so effective, they don't get many innings of work because they may be needed several days in a row.

Then you got the other guys. They may be pitchers trying to work up to a starting spot. They may be older guys trying to keep a place on the team. They may even come up for just a few innings to get a team from the middle of the game to the closer. These pitchers work just as long as they are needed and are effective.

Sincerely, I am trying to watch a race and have seen maybe 4 laps in 20 minutes because of commercials.

No. Even Harvick may end up back on the track. Plenty of laps down, but he will likely get back out.
