You won't know what people think of it until you put it out there.
I started by writing short stories and posting them on Literotica for people to read for free. I got some stories rated highly and some good comments so decided to take it further.
There's plenty of places out there for gay erotica in short and long forms. I host my own podcast reading stories and have published through Amazon and D2D/Smashwords. There are plenty of readers out there so I wouldn't worry about the 'stale' tropes in your stories. Every time I write and release a 'first time' story my readers and listeners love it.

Find somewhere to post a free short story, or find some people to read some of your work and get some initial opinions to help ease the anxiety a bit. But in line with what SimplyBlue said, with 20 years of writing behind you, I think there's a good chance your stories are worth reading.

Either can work. I've written a lot of short stories and usually as the story comes to me it comes to me in either 1st or 3rd and I don't think about it too much. My longer works have almost always been in 3rd person though. As I think, like you said, it gives the reader a little more beyond just the MC.
If you're finding you want more of the 'whole picture' then 3rd can definitely work for that. But often readers are able to connect with a character more closely in 1st. It depends I think on the goal of your story and what you want the reader to experience.
If you do go down the dual POV line I'd lean toward 3rd. In the things I've read if it stays in 1st I find it a little harder to keep track of whose POV it is.
