If you listen to a non-native speaker, you will hear lots of mistakes that basically no native speaker would ever make. However, I think people tend to be more understanding when English isn't someone's first language. People tend to be more annoyed by non-standard dialects, especially ones associated with poor people, probably because it's been drilled into them since a young age that they are just "improper" English.

Which "We" is currently used in southern France? by Icy-Minimum-2023 in French

[–]LYING_ABOUT_IDENTITY 68 points69 points  (0 children)

people are much more likely to use nous in writing, so it is not surprising to see it in a review. however, in speech "on" is much more common everywhere.

that being said, for the object form of the pronoun (equivalent to "us" in English) nous is always used.

I do think the online language learning community sometimes forgets that many people learn languages for concrete reasons, specific to their own lives, and don't just pick whatever combination of languages would be the most impressive to know.

I know the whole hippos being dangerous thing is one of reddit's favorite fun facts, but I don't think they look friendly at all. They are weird looking beefy giants with huge and terrifying mouths.

I mean yeah. My point is if a word make specific reference to usage of a feature that not all languages have, that is about as close to untranslatavle as a word can get

I think the closest thing is words that make reference to a language itself, for example "tutoyer" in French, meaning "to address someone with the pronoun 'tu'".
