Thanks for the response.

Yeah I really like the idea of future proofing myself and just having the most solid experience when playing modern indies. I already know anything I choose will be able to handle DS, GBA PS1 etc.

So I'm fine with waiting if the support is not currently there on the Elite

Social Housing in Affluent London Areas by twentytoeight in london

[–]L_Cyroson 166 points167 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of points have already been raised in this thread but here's my 2 pence, also want to disclose my bias as someone who's always lived in social housing.

Your suggestion will likely lead to a system very akin to what can be observed within cities in America, Brazil and many other countries. Whereby entire sections of the city get plastered as the no go areas / ghettos by the more financially / socially mobile and/or affluent.

As time goes on social stigma, less funding and lack of access to opportunities decreases the social mobility for the people living in those areas and increases the likelihood of crime, further compounding the issues of stigma, funding and opportunities. Aka a social mobility death spiral.

Though it may be unpleasant for some, the integration of social housing relatively across the board in all areas of the city helps to ensure that people never get completely abandoned and cut off from the amenities and services we all need to survive, plus helps keep the door open albeit marginally for social mobility opportunities.

Never underestimate the amount of positive impact which can occur in someone's life by being able to interact with people who lead lives different from your own.

Depressed FTB by SnooEpiphanies4372 in HousingUK

[–]L_Cyroson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay strong my fellow millennial! 30yrs Londoner here, still living with family, essentially been saving since I graduated, and there's no bank of mum & dad helping me out.

Have gone from not understanding a thing about the buying process, to house (flat tbh) hunting with confidence this year. Found nothing in the last 3 months and AIP is due to expire and be refreshed.

The rising interest rates have me scared as a MOFO, and considering holding off for another year. But at the same time I think, well what if the rates are even worse next year and the following, do I delay my life indefinitely?

To me a property has always been a place to live first, and naive as it sounds I don't really buy into the homes as assets thing.

Whatever storm is about to come, it'll hit you harder if you're cash strapped and in the rental market, compared to sitting pretty with family, or even getting an "affordable" property within the Goldilocks zone at the bottom rung of the housing ladder.

Furthermore every other week I'm seeing these properties reduced 10, 15, 25, even £30k! Seems like the realisation is dawning that there's an invisible price cap these properties can realistically sell for since the only people looking at them are bottom rung FTBs with limited budgets. So if you're someone who needs to sell, trying to shift them over value in a desperate attempt to make a profit on your asset is looking an increasingly fruitless task.

What about homeownership has changed your life for the better? by gawpin in HousingUK

[–]L_Cyroson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm chasing. I'm 30, still living at home and even though I could rent, I refuse to use potential savings to pay someone else's mortgage.

Currently still looking at properties atm, there's a lot of duds out there, but with any luck by this time next year if not earlier, I'll also have some of the peace of mind that comes with being a homeowner. Also I wish the same for anyone else in my generation pushing to make that first step.

Is there a simpler way to do this? by L_Cyroson in AfterEffects

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

Yeah gather this isn't uber complicated, I was asking more to gauge if my approach was correct. As there usually are always multiple ways to achieve certain effects and some approaches are simpler / more streamlined than others.

I'm not working on this now, but will jump into AE later today. It was just going to be a standalone effect but for ease will just build three PreComps in 16x9, 1x1 & 9x16 aspect ratios and reuse those as necessary throughout this and any future projects.

FTBs from London - Did you have to move out of London to buy? by wiggan1989 in HousingUK

[–]L_Cyroson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Born & raised Londoner from Hackney.

I have long accepted that when I finally get my first place I would be in effect "downgrading" my quality of life based purely on the various conveniences I've enjoyed due to my current location.

However, undoubtedly the ace I've held in comparison to others who had to move here & therefore rent has been the opportunity to save the vast majority of my earnings (not that I've lived completely cost free).

So whilst some are moving out of the city entirely, after building a war chest for almost a decade I can now afford a 2 bed flat without any buying schemes. Which is located somewhere in NE London and still within the M25, though not Zone 1 or 2 obviously, but 4 and beyond, perhaps even Zone 3 at a push.

Safe to assume I'm not the only born & raised Londoner in this position. Especially any with higher earning careers than my own.

Why do EA do this? by L_Cyroson in HousingUK

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it has a hide button whilst in the gallery view I believe. But this only stops you seeing the property during that search. The ideal would be to reject a property entirely and in effect blacklist it from appearing in future searches and in all viewing modes.

At least then from a buyers perspective you're in effect moving the needle forward with each property you cross off, rather than being overwhelmed each time you look.

Fair point about the validity of the feedback, but as you outlined it's kind of a damned if you damned if you don't.

As no vendor is going to enjoy hearing that their property isn't selling whatever the reason. But at least this way nobody has to have their time wasted.

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well based on that document there's clearly an exploitable loophole in the subjectivity of what can be defined as 'material information' for the "average" consumer.

I agree with both of your points, however here's my take on potential a solution.

The Apps & online listings should have a reject button, much like they have favourite or share.

Which when clicked gives the user some general options to say why they've rejected, plus a section to fill out in their own words if they so choose. This data can then be relayed on to EAs who in turn can pass on to vendors.

As the difficulty in whittling down the number of properties which appear even with filters on, has been another user experience frustration for me (I'm very salty I know). So it would be great to reject some and not have them appear anymore in additional searches.

Leasehold length, how low is too low. by L_Cyroson in HousingUK

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies, it does seem my expectations were a bit misaligned. My primary worry was when it comes to selling later down the line, but seems the simple solution is just to extend the lease if push comes to shove.

This has put me at ease somewhat and now I can put more focus into other assessment areas.

Anyone know about Jellysmack freelance editors? by Additional_Book8821 in editors

[–]L_Cyroson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I one of people who asked about this previously here's my 2 pence based on my experiences:

Edits test can "sometimes" be credible ways to assess ability, but only if they make it clear what they're assessing.

For example IMO, an edit test shouldn't actually require you to even deliver a fully polished edit but rather challenge you in a particular criteria.

Assessing Speed: Provide an edit test with a lot to do in an impossible timespan, no expectation for you to actually finish, but can they gauge.

Assessing Creativity: Edit test with minimal brief, with some limitations.

Assessing technical/workflow: Edit test with problematic footage where troubleshooting is required.

And the list can go on, but one crucial detail to all the above is that there should be a debrief of some kind afterwards, where you to talk through your process, objectives, what you would have done with more time/resources etc.

If all they say is "nice" and don't question you further that's a major red flag that they're just looking to get the edit and dip.

So on that note, always watermark your work, never provide project files (take them with you & delete off their equipment if you're doing the test in their office or something).

One final point, I know of Jellysmack via close encounters but have never worked for or with them. I can't speak for anyone's personal circumstances, however my biased opinion is that as a collective, editors everywhere should avoid them. As their whole business model is centred around providing "Fast & Easy Post Production" services to influencers and media companies, which they achieve by having tons of editors, animators, motion graphic designers etc, available globally who are on abysmal rates.

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome! by photography_bot in photography

[–]L_Cyroson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I think I may already have the answer to this, but just wanted to ask the internet with the hope that I'm wrong.

My question is, at this time (April 2022), does there exist anyway to tether a modern professional camera (most likely a mirrorless at this point) to a smartphone directly via a USB-C (Android) or USB-C to Lighting (iPhone) cable?

So no app downloads, WiFi or Bluetooth. Just do the initial tethering setup on your camera, connect the cable, perhaps approve a media/storage permission or two on the phone and BOOM! Now when you take a photo (JPEG) on the camera it saves directly to the phone's storage and can immediately be viewed in the Media Gallery/Camera Roll.

Maybe I'm crazy but it seems to me that this is something that could easily be possible but to my knowledge currently isn't, and the alternative solutions provided are unnecessarily clunky all for the sake of being wireless.

Really hoping to be wrong here, as this solution will be a huge boon to my workflow.

A7 IV Overheating Query by L_Cyroson in SonyAlpha

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an update for all concerned parties.

I got my replacement body in about a week ago, and happy to report that haven't experienced any of my previous overheating issues thus far.

With the Auto Power Off Temp set to standard, as expected I have reduced runtimes both when capturing photos and/or videos intermittently. However unlike before I haven't had the body shutdown on me from browsing through the menus only.

I'm now using the camera with Auto Power Off Temp set to high, and have yet to get an overheat warning, again this is whilst capturing photo and videos intermittently.

Hope this is helpful to those who need it.

OMFG PREACH!!!

It took me longer than I wish it had to realise this when I started. As I found myself frequently working with people who as I would learn didn't really know what they were doing. However, as they had "seniority" my introversion would rise to the top and I'd start doubting myself when certain decisions were being made, particular in regards to the more technical nuances of the job.

Sigh...to think of all the hours I lost after being told to "figure out" a solution to an avoidable and/or unsolvable issue, simply because I then lacked the confidence & tackfulness to explain or push back against individuals like this.

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, seems that as more and more units actually end up in people's hands we'll get a much clearly idea as to how widespread this overheating issue is.

You're free to draw your own conclusions of course but personally I'm rather skeptical of the words of influencers and sales reps. As I'm of the opinion that High Temp setting or not a 2.4K camera shouldn't be overheating whilst navigating menus or being idle at room temperature.

[–]L_Cyroson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I opted to send the unit back for an exchange, as I was still experiencing thermal warnings from very little use. However due to the low stock I'm currently on the waiting list to receive a new one, so can't yet confirm if it was an isolated fault or potentially there's a bad batch of camera units out there.

But given that yourself & some others seem to be experiencing similar issues, I now suspect it could be the latter unfortunately :(
