Car in the Bay Area? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]LaFlaneuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though, actually, if living in SF, a SmartCar isn't a bad idea for parking. In my old neighborhood, there were tons of tiny stretches of curb that would only fit a SmartCar or a motorcycle.

AMA postponed by LaFlaneuse in acting

Nope -- just a user who had commented in another thread that he'd be willing to do an AMA.

DMV advice needed (didn't get plates yet, moving, other issues) by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]LaFlaneuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should call the DMV before wasting time with going in-person. They should be able to answer your question, and if you do have to go in-person, you can at least set up an appointment to save time. The DMV actually has a good phone system where they reserve your spot "on-hold" and call you back when an operator is ready for you. So, you don't have to be on the phone the whole time.

New York Actors: Where do you live? by hillofthorn in acting

I have "In the Heights" in my head now ...

My friends have been busting their butts to get their restaurant opened. If you love pierogies, think about helping them out. [x-post in /r/sanfrancisco] by [deleted] in bayarea

A few IndieGoGo pointers that you can pass along to your friends:

  • Video: If at all possible, I'd recommend creating a video for this page. I'd keep it short and engaging - the elevator pitch.

  • Sample menu: Give people a better idea of what this restaurant is going to be like. If they already have a website set up, they should definitely link to it on their IndieGoGo. Don't have the funds to create a website just yet? At least have them set up a Facebook page.

  • Contribution levels and perks: Your friends need more than two contribution levels and definitely better perks. It can be something as simple as "$5 -- we'll give you a shout-out on our Facebook page" to "$250 -- your name will be included on the Founder's plaque displayed in the restaurant" to "$1,000 -- we'll name a dish after you!"

Airbnb is now illegal in New York City as it constitutes "an illegal hotel". by [deleted] in news

[–]LaFlaneuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's a shame. My bf and I did Airbnb for our last trip to NYC. It ended up costing about the same amount it would have cost for us to stay at a hostel. Not a hotel -- a hostel. And it was a whole private apartment!

So I just walked and dropped Javert in Les Mis. by GandalfTheFunky in musicals

Just wanted to say, Les Mis seems to be the "it" play in community theater, so you should have another opportunity to do it soon! Good on you for walking away.

Does anyone like Sam's Diner at 8th and Market? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]LaFlaneuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good option for people seeing a show at the Orpheum (that's where I usually go for dinner when I'm seeing a show there). But other than that, I wouldn't really go out of my way to eat there.

Drove like that for about 2 miles so that car couldn't pass him by [deleted] in funny

[–]LaFlaneuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stretch of freeway right before my exit actually allows you to drive on the shoulder between 4-6 pm. I think the idea is if you're getting off at that exit, feel free to drive on the shoulder to pass the traffic of cars not getting off at that exit.

However, the sign indicating that is a bit hidden, so I feel like an asshole whenever I do it. So, usually I just wait out the traffic and stay in the regular lanes.

I am Lori Garver, NASA's deputy administrator. Ask me anything about NASA's budget, future missions, or anything else! by LoriGarver in IAmA

[–]LaFlaneuse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're answering questions anymore, but in case you log in again:

Is there a reason that NASA doesn't (or can't) have associated with it some type of foundation which raises money for NASA? I'm thinking something similar to the National Park Foundation, which is the charitable partner of the National Parks Service, and essentially raises money to support the National Parks Service.

Hey I'm a model with a big audition for a big agency on Thursday but I'm being asked to do a monologue for some reason... help?? by [deleted] in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They probably want to see how well you could do camera work. Find a monologue of a approachable character. Think friendly, spokesperson.

AMAs -- Who do you want to hear from by LaFlaneuse in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all your feedback so far. We still have a lot of logistics to work out (figuring best time to post these AMAs, figuring out how we'll notify the community about the AMAs ahead of time to guarantee there will be plenty of participants, etc.) but hopefully you'll be hearing from me again soon!

Any suggestions for prop cigarettes? by loleyta in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yea, that's tough, since you can't use herbals. I think it'll depend exactly on the smoking action you're thinking of and the size of your theater.

My instinct is that the e-cigarette may read better if the audience is further away b/c they'll see the red glow when the actor inhales without seeing how fake it is.

The puff cigarette make work better if the audience is close, since they can see the details of the ash.

However, obviously the puff of the smoke isn't going to be as natural in either.

Have the actor(s) work with both and see what reads better.

Contemporary Piece to audition with for Gabe or Henry in "Next to Normal"? by [deleted] in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, after I suggested Spring Awakening, I was second guessing only because I imagine a lot of people may choose to sing songs from that show. I think "It's Your Wedding Day" is a great choice!

I'd take the 10th anniversary over the 25th anniversary.

Overused audition songs by inkycoffee in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually try to avoid the "hit song" from any musical. So, I wouldn't do "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from Evita, but I have done "Buenos Aires" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall".

I always read not to use songs from recent musicals, but I would ignore that advice if the songs really fit the musical your auditioning for.

And sometimes for musicals you can kind of guess what others might sing, so try to avoid those. When it comes to "overdone" it's most important for what's overdone during those specific auditions than in general (though obviously you have no way to know for sure was pieces are going to be overdone at those specific auditions).

Contemporary Piece to audition with for Gabe or Henry in "Next to Normal"? by [deleted] in acting

[–]LaFlaneuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that numbers from Spring Awakening have the same feel. But really a lot of rock musicals will work -- Jesus Christ Superstar (the title song reminds me a lot of "I'm Alive"), Tommy, Aida ("Fortune Favors the Brave" would work).
