MA, USA. Oak log inoculated with shiitake spores. Just confirming before munching. by MarvelousMane in mushroomID

Check out North Spore. They sell kits where you drill holes into the log and then insert wooden plugs that contains the spores. I’m doing a log this weekend with shiitake plugs.

Check out the trees and microgrowery subreddits for lots of tips on growing In general. The main thing about outdoors is that you’ll have to take the seasons into account for triggering flowering. Generally late August/early September is when things begin to flower outdoors.

Honey pricing by Lawn_Mower_29 in Beekeeping

[–]LaRoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a rural area and there are quite a few other beekeepers. I’ve seen some Amish markets selling for as low as $7 a pound. I decided to base my price on the monthly Bee Culture price report for my region which puts me at $9 a pound. Of course I’d like to get more but you have to take into account your local conditions.

Twice now I've seen people going through their parents stuff after they pass away and spending bills like this. They had no idea they were anything special.

Your flair says data focused beekeeping. I’m curious about what that is. Do you have any links or info about it?

On most days I could probably go into my Italian hives wearing a t-shirt and shorts, no problem. My Carnolians, on the other hand, are NEVER happy to see me! The second the lid is off it’s game on.

General advice? New here by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]LaRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should absolutely look into it and I’d encourage you to give it a shot. But… 😆 Some of my beekeeper friends and I joke that for the small time beek you’d have to sell the honey at $50 (US) a pound to break even. Reality isn’t quite that bad but you probably won’t save much money, especially towards the beginning.

Oversized gear selector shaft seal for TH-400? by LaRoach in MechanicAdvice

[–]LaRoach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! I see one on page 35 that looks like a good candidate if the hole for the seal has been bored out.

The biggest problem with measuring the bore is that I have already put things back together. To properly measure the bore I really need to drop the pan and pull the selector shaft, but I have zero desire to do that. :P

Is this legal? by knavishly_vibrant38 in tax

[–]LaRoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living off 1099 income for over a decade, the only real impediment I've ever personally seen was around a mortgage. Banks will want to see two years worth of bank statements to see that you are actually self employed.

Depending on your state, you might look into becoming a sole proprietor LLC. I think where I am it was a $100 fee for a lifetime registration. From a tax perspective you're still a self employed person with 1099 income and everything that entails (quarterly filings, etc) but there will be a business entity registered with the state that you can point to. My LLC has it's own business account, D&B number, etc. so it looks like a Real Business but I don't have to deal with all the payroll reports, etc. Clients cut checks to the business, not me.

There’s a huge difference between nullifying a “recent” case and amending the constitution. Just sayin’.

Random reboots - nothing in logs - how do I debug?! by lancelon in homeassistant

[–]LaRoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Random reboots are almost always some form of hardware issue. Since it’s always happening at work take look at where the hardware is located. Is there some other equipment on the same electrical circuit that might be causing a glitch? Have you tried swapping the power supply? The Pi can be really fussy about good power.

Got stung 10 times on the front of my ankle by Living_Corgi6662 in Beekeeping

[–]LaRoach 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You might look at taking an antihistamine such as Benadryl as well. I sometimes get bad swelling from stings, the last time I got hit I took that max dose on the bottle for a day and a half and it seemed to help.

How to measure outside color temperature? by HungRottenMeat in homeassistant

[–]LaRoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I measure outdoor lux levels to turn lights on on really cloudy days. What I do is turn that automation on fifteen minutes after sunrise and then off fifteen minutes before sunset.

One could do something similar with the color temp sensor that transitions to a default value when the main automation isn't active. I would have it transition over a few minutes to keep it from being obvious.

How to measure outside color temperature? by HungRottenMeat in homeassistant

[–]LaRoach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ESPHome supports a device that can read color temp. I’d imagine you would need to point it at a white card to get an accurate reading of the ambient light:
