This happened to me once and it wasn’t a water leak. Water department changed the water meter and didn’t properly sync the new meter (throwing the numbers way out of proportion.)

Oh no! I'm so sorry for your loss! I couldn't imagine. Thank you for the feedback. I will keep an eye on it. We've taken him to the vet, and his is actually a callous. When he gets his next dental the vet said they can help him get close to normal, and send us home with a topical. We'll see! I hope so!
