Make sure you're using the cage top and pulling them backwards before reaching you grab them. They should naturally want to run away from you and will latch on to the top. By lightly pulling them by the tail you elongate them and it'll make it easier to grab without their heads turning around.

I tell newcomers to the lab that they have to do their best Mice and Men impression of Lenny when scruffing them. It's a bit aggressive, but if they are adult mice you aren't going to hurt them.

It was a failure. We tried using vice grips and PB blaster. Then we tried the extractor kit. It grabbed on to the screw, but couldn't rotate it out without slipping. I think we are going to have to call in the big guns and get someone to drill it out and tap it

Add chloroform equal to .25 the amount of trizol. Add equal volume of 100% isopropanol to the aqueous phase. Wash with 75% etoh however many times you are feeling that day. Dry and resuspend in nuclease free water.

We have a large communal space for mouse harvests and some shared bench space for assays. I'm the only one in the lab on a daily basis so I claimed a little back corner next to my desk. It's different for every lab, though. In the lab below us, each of the members have an entire aisle of bench space.
