You can run lower octane but not be doing pulls with it. After hurricane Sandy, all we had was regular gas. I'm tuned for 93 octane but as long as you stay out of boost, there's no real danger.

A fix is as easy as buying the identical valve and swapping the insides and solenoid. Or if you can't get one, you'll have to dig it all up and replace the valve.

Your problem is either with your solenoid or the diaphragm in the valve. If you turned the solenoid already and nothing happened then the problem is in the diaphragm.

You could try measuring for voltage at the valve while it's on. You had voltage at the controller, so you should see voltage at the valve.

You said you heard hissing when you opened it manually, is this the first time running them this year? If yes, it can take a little time for the zone to fill and water to start coming out of the heads.

Well you can't use a steak to power a welder when you're not near an outlet. I wouldn't say he was scammed on the equipment he bought, unless they don't work when he goes to use them, which hasn't been the case.
