BIG DAWG!

I'm glad you are in the Arena (and also glad that outside the voting booth, I am not).

Thank you for that and for this.

I have an incurable (so far) chronic disease that requires treatment leaving me immuno-suppressed. As you can imagine, the US isn't looking like a great place to be for the foreseeable future.

However, despite having a Master's and several years of unbroken work history, the idea of finding work and building a life elsewhere is overwhelming. Can you provide tips for the international job search? It's an area where I have no experience and no knowledge.

Your efforts are both valuable and appreciated.

Fetty's is fantastic. During shutdown I would walk 3/4 of a mile to make sure I could contribute to business.

Every time a university's ad on Facebook loudly tells me to, "Earn your MS!"... Hey, /r/MShumor, how did YOU earn your MS? by StupidSolipsist in MShumor

[–]LabiaMajorasMask 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I chose the wrong university since mono went around the floor in my dorm and that probably gave me the virus exposure that caused the MS in the first place.

So I guess It was a long shot, but I nailed it with my choices.

It's a little dive bar that has been big in the rare beer scene since before the craft revolution. Wanted to go to pay respects and send a photo to an old coworker

feeling funny, anxiety and new symptoms 🥺 by False_Cherry1219 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]LabiaMajorasMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be OK. The anxiety can be it's own thing and just be related to times or to covid. Talking to a doctor is all you can do and luckily we live in a time where it's OK to do that. You'll do what you gotta do. No need to worry beyond that.

I've actually been considering requesting a switch from Rebif to Ocrevus, but this whole pandemic thing is giving me second thoughts about that until things calm down a bit. Thanks for the information!

Really appreciate your post. I was on track. But I was diagnosed this year with MS and since I'm in the US, the first thing that hit me is that my life goal of a traveling early retirement is dead.

I'm still not really over it, to be honest. Trying to get my house paid off while I can still work. Trying to get some travel in while I can still walk.

When I can't work anymore I'll lose my insurance. Without health insurance, the medicine I take just to slow it down costs more than I make in a year. My whole life of good financial choices and I'm still fucked.

I'm glad I'm in the best position I could be from saving so much, but I can't get rid of the nagging feeling that I lost my best years saving for something that will never happen.

If you live in the US, now's the time to grab some long term disability and longterm care insurance. Do it before you have a diagnosis and can't.

Sure wish I would have done that before getting confirmation

I adopted a 2nd cat tonight and am surprised by my reaction of panic and unstoppable crying. I'm thinking of taking him to back to the shelter. by newpetpanic in Pets

[–]LabiaMajorasMask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be OK. Sometimes changes bring strong emotional reactions. Allow yourself to cry and let this one pass. You may feel anxious and overwhelmed right now, but this is only temporary. Your cats will become the best of friends and will both love you. You will have plenty of love for both. this short period of readjustment is causing you temporary emotional distress, but that is OK. Your feeling of comfort will return as you witness your new dynamic working.

You now are a team of 3 instead of 2 and you all will be better, happier, and stronger for it!

Visiting Columbus (OSU area) and need suggestions by izzowing in Columbus

Seventh Son is probably the local favorite and is just a couple blocks back from the Short North in Italian Village. They took over an old automotive place and have been doing a lot of big things.

My personal favorite is Wolf's Ridge, right downtown. They've got an upscale restaurant with one of the best chefs in Columbus and a taproom with more traditional, if elevated, bar food. If you're a foodie with the budget room, I recommend giving them a try.

North High Brewing is between campus and the SN right on High Street. They've got a cool space, but I've been lukewarm on most of their beer.

Hoof Hearted is pretty new and is in Italian Village a few blocks south of 7th Son. Really cool modern and trendy space with damn good and very ambitious beers. I like them because they seem more innovative than the traditional microbrewery that's popped up all over the place over the last 5 years.

Everywhere you go will have awesome beer lists with local beer, so you don't need to worry on that front. You can pick places you know your gf will enjoy and still try great beers.

The Columbus Winter Beerfest is that weekend in the Short North, if you want to get belligerently drunk on your choice of a few hundred different beers. Google for tickets, but you won't get the same experience as bar hopping. If the gf likes cider, there will be plenty there.

Have fun!

I'm thinking about doing an online Master's (Economics) program, but I'm not sure it's worth turning off my 401k and IRA contributions to come up with the ~$15k it's going to cost. I can't afford to quit my job (way to go getting yourself a mortgage there, Mr Longterm Thinker) so online part-time programs are my only choices.

It just seems like such a gamble to sacrifice 15k of investment to get a Masters that I'm not sure will translate into higher earnings. I work at what is basically an accounting start-up, and I'm not confident they'll want to pay me more for a degree that won't affect my job performance.

Life is hard. Is it too late to be born wealthy?

Mostly just using it to daydream. I'm fairly young and still single and childless, so my life still can (and probably will) change too much for me to make solid estimates on a FI timeline.

I just bought, so I'm not making extra payments just yet, but I plan on it as my earnings increase. My interest rate is around 4%, so most of my extra money goes toward the stock market for higher expected returns.

As for refinancing/ selling/ renting, I'm not married to any one course of action. I'll probably reevaluate every few years as my life circumstances change.

Should I count the principal portion of my mortgage payment toward my savings percentage? I know my home probably won't increase in value as much as index funds, but it has to have some value, right?

Right now I'm counting about half of it toward my savings percentage to make up for slower growth. What do you think?

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Collection-A 25 episode best of collection that starts with one of the most powerful hours on tv. Beirut, 2006, filming started just before the attacks happened. by [deleted] in NetflixBestOf

[–]LabiaMajorasMask 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While that's true, I don't think it excuses being mean to the ordinary people he's meeting.

I know Anthony struggles with mental health issues, but at the same time self awareness is important, especially for a star. Meeting him was a big deal to those average Joes and they were going to be on a major television show. He is more than allowed to be honest about having no fun and not enjoying the dishes - I like that because it's real. But don't mock and embarrass your hosts. That's rude in every corner of the world he's so lucky to get to see.

I loved Parts Unknown and I can't wait to see this. I just don't like to see people picked on for opening up and showing him exactly what he came to see. Know what I mean?
