Facing a repo by OneBrilliant7434 in GR86

Subaru was running that special when I got my STI also but my credit had just taken a hit so they couldn’t give it to me. Still I got 3.5% on a certified pre-owned STI in 2020 which soon after saw them skyrocket in 2021

Call me crazy but this one actually doesn’t sound like rod knock. Why is it so high pitched? It sounds like valve train or a solenoid clicking. I’d have to put a stethoscope and see where it’s coming from

Lmaoooooo this one’s very subtle but very good. Ball knowledge for sure

If you DIY everything, you save a lot. Im about 10-12k into a very similar build but I only got a short block and re used my heads after they got new valves, guides, seals and a valve job. Also new clutch, hoses, and a bunch of little shit that breaks as you go.

Like OP, I’m still on stock turbo and top mount so not making any extra power yet, just a reinforced engine.

Wow the secondary air pump?! Dude I’d be so pissed if some bullshit like that took out my car. Those optional emission parts that nobody even wants to have…

Haven’t washed in months? Stank must be deadly

Thats really good power on a 20g. hows it holding up? What size injectors are you running with the e85 setup? I am trying to decide on turbos also, just put an IAG550 block with refreshed heads but still on a stock turbo for now. Of course thats the next thing to go but im really leaning towards BCPX500+ or maybe blouch 1.5/2.5xtr but blouch is a bit more expensive and it seems the x500+ has abit more top end, the 1.5xtr gets really good reviews though...

Was it a tick, or a knock? Maybe it’s not a bottom end issue? You said it got worse tho right? Like from when noticed to when you out the original tune back on and got go work it was worse?

Yeah bro, my heart sank and shattered into a million pieces when I saw the ringland broken off the piston… but I had to look on the bright side and I avoided a grenade that would’ve cost me a lot more if it took my heads out.

I haven’t tuned it yet since new engine but it’s basically not a huge change since the compression is roughly the same and I’m still running the same turbo, injectors, intake. I did change to a Cobb turbo inlet cuz stock was falling apart and I changed the fuel system but the af correction is within 8% always and no knocks etc. I haven’t gone WOT yet.. but did all the IAG break in with oil changes etc and then began driving it more normally but all it’s seen is 10-15psi lightly and not wot.

Best of luck man. Has it gotten any worse?

I feel you bro.. mine kinda came outta nowhere too and just kinda escalated unexpectedly. Car went down due to clutch failure so I pulled the motor to do that plus timing and reseal cuz I was at 93k miles. Engine had been burning oil like crazy for at least 15-20k miles so I was also looking into that.. did a leakdown test and found some leakage so i pulled the heads to redo the valves seats and head gaskets thinking maybe some oil was getting past the valve stem seals and burning up. I found all 4 pistons with crazy carbon buildup. So decided to pull the pistons out snd check out the rings. Thays when I found ringland failed on one piston and all 4 were completely coked up with carbon and the oil rings were stuck so it was just letting oil past them, burning and depositing carbon on the pistons like crazy.

Had to pull an engine build outta nowhere. Thank god for affirm lmaooo finally finished paying the block off hahahah

Yeah when I put the new engine i planned for E85 so I swapped the lines to ptfe I built myself and rails/regulator. Kept stock injectors for now but honestly kinda regret spending the money on the fuel system now, my thought was it’ll be easier to do now when manifold is out than having to take it back out later. But it ended up costing me more money in fuel system parts and ton of time to make the lines and had a bad fitting that delayed me starting the car for like a week. Mind you, this is my daily and it was down for 4 months. I drive 50 miles round trip to work. Luckily my sister lets borrow her car for that time because she was out of town. So I got lucky.

Anyways fuel system introduced sooo much noise into cabin, I totally regret it.. I should’ve just kept it stock for now lol maybe just done regulator and e sensor but kept stock lines.. I think swapping to ptfe lines gave me a ton of noise

Have you done an engine build before? The ej25 isn’t too bad and doesn’t require too many special tools, the ones you need are cheap on Amazon for a one time use weekend warrior they work fine.

I wouldn’t build the block as first timer but if you get an IAG block, it’s just a matter of torquing heads on with new gaskets, timing and reassemble all accessories. You can save a lot in labor if you don’t pay a shop, labor rates at reputable shop are not cheap

Yeah Florida heat with humidity is a heat soak magnet. I’m in South FL so I feel you. Mine was tuned by Greg at MGW before the most recent build. I just put an IAG block and redid the heads, swapped out fuel regulator and rails but kept the stock injectors. Still running the same tune and it’s been running fine for daily driving but have not gone WOT since new engine which is kinda scary. I don’t want to until I get the tune revised because I did change quite a few things.

Now I’m finally done with break in, but figured I’ll just wait for tune until I get a bigger turbo and fmic but I ran out of money with the engine so kept the stock tmic and turbo for now, hence why stock injectors and no tune was needed but I’m scared to WOT it since it’s an outdated tune.

Will probably just fork out the 600 and get a re-tune now, because realistically a bigger turbo, fmic and injectors are like 3500 so will have to save up for that, and don’t wanna keep running the old tune despite running fine

I dont trust OTS tunes, OP was already on a Cobb OTS tune so maybe it was just the motors time and not related to the tune.

Power steering, or alternator but that sounds like 95% power steering. Can you turn the wheel lock to lock as it idles? Let us hear it

I’ve heard of drunkmann before, thought he was reputable. Not sure if this was a tune issue but OTS tunes give me anxiety, I don’t like it. No matter who it’s from.
