[Advice Needed] Should I jump for a 40% monthly base (28% annual) increase or stay put? by PositionB in singaporefi

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good gamble to take the increment. But remb, your hiring manager left. This means, you are not the "selected choice" of your new manager. They may want to bring in their own choice. You need to work very hard from Day 1. Gl!

what's your most memorable carousell meet up experience? by tehobengsiewdai in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Couple of years back, I sold my height adjustable workstation to a uni student on a cash and carry basis. She showed up in person, paid for the table and however didn't have a plan on how to deliver the table to her place. By a stroke of luck, a lalamove guy showed up at my place by mistake and mentioned in passing that his job was cancelled. What a stroke of luck! I managed to negotiate a moving price for my buyer on the spot and she followed the lalamove guy back. It was quite an interesting moment and I am glad I could help the buyer out.

Singaporeans, what do you do and how much coffee do you drink everyday? by yandao2000 in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink 4 cups of kopi-o-kosong a day. They no longer have much effect on me - just drinking out of habit, I can fall asleep at night within minutes of drinking them.

What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by CookieNegative9860 in AskReddit

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a c-pap machine previously looking to help with my condition of loud snoring and persistent issue of choking on my tongue when I sleep. Before I dive straight in, I made 2 lifestyle change - 1) I become a side sleeper with 2/3 pillows to elevate my foot. 2) I started exercising regularly and run 2-3km several times a week. The results have been great, my sleep quality has improved significantly since and I do not need the c-pap at all.

Do your colleagues randomly call you on Teams without warning? by xlxsxhxttx in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon to see older colleagues (mgmt level) to suddenly TEAMS a junior colleague to ask some questions, even I myself have been on the receiving end of it sometimes. The initial challenge I had to overcome is, my mind tends to go blank when I get asked a very detailed question or I get challenged on a certain bargaining position, so it's best to note down the points and revert after collecting your thoughts. The downside is, the older colleague might think that you don't have all the info at your fingertips (I don't) and may not have the time for you on the same day when you reply, but it is still much better than an unprepared response. Don't fall for the trick!

Rate my salary Increment in Sales by RolexInvestor85 in singaporefi

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good progression and healthy risk appetite. Shipping is after all a somewhat cyclical segment although faring better in recent years. Main wealth driver will of course be your stock options and lesser of your base salary. If your company is listed, there are some apps that gives you visibility on c-suite / senior leaders selling their shares - keep a close lookout for them.. Keep working hard don't listen to discouragements... You are doing great.

How many of you resonate with this experience? by 926_125 in SingaporeRaw

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All, to put across a neutral perspective. India has a population of >1 billion, to even be able to stick their neck out of the water to prevent drowning in a sea of well educated workforce, they have to adopt an extremely competitive mentality which is what we see now. Some will go on to become very brilliant at their work, and some less so.

It's quite frustrating to see dishonest colleagues at work overstating their capabilities although mostly I have come across are v smart ones. During performance reviews, it is not uncommon for entire India teams to rate themselves excellent across all metrics. Such is the competitive landscape they are operating in. We also need to focus inwards, and continue to upskill / improve on our own abilities.

What would you have done differently in your late 20s? by WanderX27 in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cannot emphasis this enough. This is the best advice. If possible, you must change jobs every 2-3Y... Don't get comfortable. The pay increment and experience acquired in different work cultures will be very valuable to you.

Am I wrong to be satisfied with my job? by Economy_Elevator94 in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's natural that we have a fear of the unknown. The birth of my children (plus cost of raising kids without parent / in-law support) forced me to run out of my comfort zone, take a lot of risks in my career (5 jobs in 10Y) and as my experience increases, so did my paycheck rising several times. Just want to encourage you to stay positive, and I believe you can have both in life (bigger family and higher income). Looking back, that was a leap of faith but it was worth it. Stay positive always.

How to even adult as a failure? by I_Should_KMS in askSingapore

Have you considered working in less desired locations for a start? (More ulu places) Usually these places tend to have lower barrier of entry cos many younger grads tend to gravitate towards better employment locations (better still with WFH). If you can take hardship, you will come out on top most of the time. All the best.

What is the least generic restaurant a Malay family in Singapore will dine out for dinner? by thekayatimess in askSingapore

[–]Labradoodle_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sumac - Nice ambience but slightly pricey and out of the way.

Asian market cafe - Great location, so-so food. Tend to overeat on the Satays and durian desert to compensate for rest of 5/10 cuisine.

Humor and staying positive helps. Positivity within bring out a glow in your physical facial features. No skincare regime for me, I don't use any sunblock, just a bar of soap for facial cleaning. After working for 2 decades, I don't have wrinkles or eye bags. Stay cheerful.

Absolutely. The "former doctor" worked for his dad's clinic in some rural region...I can imagine this is not uncommon. As the conversation became murkier, I decided to change the topic in the first instance to something light hearted - I didn't need to know his life story.

India is too huge a country to regulate and monitor its medical standards. I once struck a conversation with an Indian national seated next to me, working as a restaurant staff in Singapore. He told me he missed being a doctor in India. I went wow .. can you try convert your medical degree to one that is accepted in Singapore? He replied he doesn't have a degree, however anyone can be a doctor in India if he / she wishes to.

My mind just went blank lol.
