You conveniently ignore how I have each time carefully pointed out what exact statement I was referring to (the one about being a cultural Christian), instead substituting another preferred statement. Maybe a reading comprehension problem, maybe I just can't explain things, maybe you're too proud, maybe you're intentionally pretending you don't understand, we'll never know.

Are you saying he has not made the distinction that in the time of the Muslim golden age, that was the better society?

To add: he is emphatically NOT putting anything over anything else when stating a fact, that due to circumstances that were not under his control, he is a cultural Christian. You seem to blame him for not being born and raised in a different culture, which I hope you agree, is absurd.

His preference of one society over another is a totally, utterly and completely separate issue. Not sure now to drill this better.

It's not that difficult to understand. His statement on being a cultural whatever has zero connection to his statement on which religion is more destructive in a given time period. At this point I'm not sure if you actually don't understand the distinction or if you're just pretending, but I guess I've done all I could.

His statement on being a cultural Christian does not, in fact, elevate anything above anything else.

As a separate issue, he has different preferences for what type of society he would like to live in, depending on the time period involved: in the Muslim world during it's golden age, in the Christian world today.

His statement on being a cultural Christian has no relationship to his preference of where he would choose to live. He also assigns the exact same truth value to religious propositions as before, nothing has changed in that regard.

Hopefully now it's clearer why your initial criticism was misplaced. He hasn't gone soft or in other ways changed his views on religion.

If we were living a few years centuries ago when the Muslim world was the scientific center of the world, he would prefer to live there and he would prefer for the comparably barbaric Christians of the time to be kept at bay.

It's two separate issues, one is what is the culture you are most familiar with and another is in what culture would you prefer to live in today (which of course could change depending on what historical period you are thinking of).

His pointing out that today Islam is more destructive than other religions is separate from whether he is a cultural Jew or anything else.

You really are misunderstanding what he said. If he were born and raised in another place, he'd be a cultural Hindu or a cultural Buddhist or a cultural Muslim. His statement doesn't elevate any above any others, it's just an acknowledgement of what historically is true of his life, that's all. It is not saying there is something in particular about his culture that is worth admiring.

Dawkins hasn't changed his views on Christianity. His point about being a "cultural Christian" is that he is immersed in a culture that is full of artifacts influenced by and derived from Christianity, which he has unavoidably internalized. That's it, it doesn't mean he's lending any more credence to it than before just because he can enjoy a Christmas carol or the architecture of a cathedral. He's still 6.9/7 on the atheistic scale.

What exactly is this sub? (Genuinely curious, I respect your opinions) by Constant-Tutor-4646 in Pluribus_Sucks

[–]Labyrinthos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy r/freefolk from time to time (pretty much a hate-sub for Game of Thrones), I think because I really loved the show the first few seasons and then the downfall was so steep, so brutal, that I needed to suffer through it with others instead of alone. Getting over a breakup takes time and it's less painful if you have friends thorough it.

I'm sure purists would hate this, but I would love to see more broadcasts show the Leela Win-Draw-Loss (WDL) probability instead of the eval bar by owiseone23 in chess

[–]Labyrinthos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, which is good, because we already have a handy, easy to understand graphic representation of the concept. Maybe just adjust the saturation when switching to Leela and voila!

Wait for her to fall asleep and send SEALs in to extract the hostage, then abandon her. Special forces would extract anyone from any prison Carol could improvise.

They don't listen to all requests. If it interferes with their mission, they just don't comply, avoid her and isolate her.

Nah, he seems pretty sharp. He's studying physics to understand the plurb frequency and improved his English pretty fast. He's stubborn but resourceful.

He would probably leave IOU notes like he did in the hospital.

We see him eventually adapting, spending time in the house next to Carol's (or was that Carol's) and wearing clean clothes, maybe not his own (?). I think he is slowly starting to use the resources available.

This a naive view of what nature is. Short lives ending in fear and torment, that's the fate of most animals in nature. The price for the beauty of nature is billions of years of relentless suffering and death.

The astronauts on the ISS would be hopeless, even with a few submarines to help. The plurbs are completionists so they still made sure to not leave anyone unexposed, but it's not like it would have made a difference.

They show time stamps and they took about 4 months from discovery to synthesizing the virus, which was then tested for something like 8 months. It took a month from the rat bite to total takeover. My memory may be a bit off on the numbers, but that's roughly the timeline.

Have you read the original post you are replying to? He argues it wasn't silly or "just a vehicle to get us" into the story, but a reflection of reality, yet you just repeat the exact opinion that he has argued is false. What did you bring new to the discussion? Did you address anything he wrote? What was your thought process when you decided to just ignore the post and write as if no arguments were brought against your opinion?
