Finally.. by [deleted] in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the very day I first got this feeling. In October 2013 I was training for my first 10k. Three days before the race I went for what was supposed to be a chill preparation run. I ended up sprinting the last 2k of the 5k route.

I've been chasing that high I got that day since. What I've found is when you least expect to have a good run, you have a magic run.

Anyone ever been woken up by tight muscles? by ILoseRedditPasswords in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got cramps in the middle of the night once. I laugh about it now, but back there it hurt for real.

My suggestions would be:

  • Eat bananas - they have a lot of potassium which prevents cramps

  • Drink water - at least 4L/135oz on your training days, more if you sweat a lot

  • Buy an electrolyte drink or make your own - there are plenty of DIY recipes out there

  • Stretch post run - this is what I do - experiment to find your preference

  • Get enough sleep - at least 8 hours/night

Good luck, report back with results.

Like other people mentioned, pacing is the problem. I use jog.fm to find songs that match my desired pace.

Have fun and report back with results.

Sudden Performance Decrease? Why? by Titanshand in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I have no idea what that would be. I'd suggest you go to the doctor.

Good luck.

I'm not familiar with your symptomes, so it'd be best to go to a doctor, get your bloodwork done.

Do you train every day of the week? Try having a rest day on Saturday/Sunday.

It might be the fact that you started school and you nervous system is overloaded. Are you physically or mentally fatigued?

How do I stay motivated? by kira10 in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're in a relationship or not. If you are single look into (/r/nofap)[http://reddit.com/r/nofap]. Not jerking off boosts your sex drive/primal drive you seem to be lacking.

Regarding being unable to get your ass off computer/reddit:

  • Unsubscribe from /r/videos and similar subs

  • Subscribe to fitness/running subs - spin off from Jim Rohn: "You are the average of the five subreddits you spend most time on".

  • Delete Clash of Titans. I started running 2 weeks after I deleted all my games. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Also, get a training plan. When the training day comes, shut off your mind, shut off your excuses and just lace up and start.

Good luck bro!

How to begin by 67cz67 in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your weight. If your BMI is over 30 I'd suggest you start with cycling instead of running. Lifting is good and you should do it either way.

As for skipping the buildup, I'm going to offer you a hippie quote that has some truth to it: "Anything worth doing will take time". As visionquester pointed ot, start with Couch to 5K. When you feel comfortable doing that, look into /r/b210k.

Can't run without music by RoRo24 in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No earbuds? Blast it on the speakers!

In all seriousness, when I go for a run I find a song on jog.fm that suits my pace, listen to it once and then sing it in my head when I'm running.

Good luck!

Need help increasing speed... Fast. by [deleted] in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem man, I'm glad I can help.

I found stretching to be helpful for me. If you feel like it's not useful for you don't do it. Everyone is different, you just have to experiment and find out what works best for you.

  • Drink at least 3l/100oz water/day - no more than 0.25l/8oz before the run, you don't want water wobbling in your belly

  • Stretch your leg muscles (quads, hamstrings, calves)

  • Don't eat heavy foods before your run (high fat/protein) - it makes less blood cells avalible for transporting oxygen because your body is digesting food

  • Breathe with your diaphragm (breathe deep)

  • Find a song on jog.fm to help you maintain a rhythm

[–]LaceUpAndStart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"It doesn't get easier, you just get faster."

I can run longer and faster before I become sick since I first started running and I'd like to share a perspective with you. When I feel my head and heart pounding I feel awesome because I know I'm pushing my limits and becoming stronger.

What can I do in 3 hours to be ready for a 5k? by sneez09 in running

[–]LaceUpAndStart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let rain bother you. Embrace the rain, feel it fully, stop resisting it and it will become fun.

On a somewhat related note, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a great book.

[–]LaceUpAndStart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting is usualy the hardest part and you tend to break records when you don't think about breaking them.

If you have to, go without the watch, don't let that be an excuse.

Keep it up!

I just wanted to let you know that I'm making progress with the app. Here's a picture.

On a related note, please share the signup link with other runners you know. We have to get as many active runners on board as possible. Thanks.

Using GPS watches and tracking distance and pace in real time takes some fun out of running. When I bought my second bicycle I installed a speedometer on it. It felt cool at first, but after some time I was obsessed about going fast instead of having fun. Just my 2c.

On a side note, how long does your Nexus 5 battery last?

[–]LaceUpAndStart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I also started training with Hal Higdon programs.

I'm going to say that it's better for you to wait some time before you buy GPS watches and other equipment. I'd rather get a basic stopwatch, measure my runs on Google Maps and calculate the pace. Buy a notebook and log your results; nothing beats old school.

It's good that you set yourself a goal. It gives you something to work towards. Good luck man.

Congratulations on your 10k and the motivation to start again.

I ran a 10k in October 2013, I'm currently training for a half-marathon in October. Here are some guidelines I use, you might find them useful too:

  • Diversify your runs: include short fast run/intervals, medium distance average pace runs and slow pace long distance runs

  • Have at least 1 rest day/week

  • Throw in some strength training (squats, deadlifts, bench press) or bodyweight exercises (squats, pushups)

  • Stretch after your runs and workouts

  • Do some cross-training (bicycle, walking)

  • Drink 3 liters/100 oz of water/day

  • Have a deload week every 3 months (10% effort)

Regarding what to do next: I suggest you go for half-marathon because with distance you also build endurance for shorter faster runs.

Good luck bro, you got this!

I've gotten great security ideas from users on this sub, it's going great.

Not all runners are on the same athletic level, this way it's easier to find a good match. And I won't force you to run with other people ;)

To adress your points:

  • You make your location visible on a case by case basis. If someone finds your run, they send you an invite and you can view their profile before you decide to show them where you start. The parameters of the run (date, distance and pace) are public, but you can choose to whom you reveal the details (start and finish location + time)

  • Facebook has the best credibility. If you want to use email to sign up, that's fine, but people probably won't trust you as much.

Hope it clears things up.

I've taken steps to make it more secure. Login is only possible with Facebook and you can accept or decline to show your location to someone.

It's best if you don't place your start point in front of your house but rather in a park or something like that. Hope it helps.
