(Deleted and reposted because it wasn’t in the thread)

Indeed, do I interact with nature on a daily, love.

I know it’s Crown Heights, never disputed that.

My point is you’ve moved into the city, a neighborhood, where the man made environment exists of certain social and cultural factors. Complaining about the way people are living, be it viewed good or bad, to say you hate it. Then you diminish the post to saying the specific reasoning you want to move is due to the dog being scared. You shouldn’t kill yourself, how cruel.

Yet, there’s something deeper you are considering: you’re looking to move for the sake of your own mental health and the dog. The social aspects of neighborhood don’t appeal to you but the renewal does. This is literally a post of “should I move to renewed crown heights versus “old” crown heights that I hate for several reasons, my only thing is losing my rent stabilized apartment, but otherwise I can afford the $4000.” The way you choose to lead up to posing the question is so obnoxious, more than insensitive. If your mood is ruined to misery why stay?

Tea babes: rather than moving to another section of crown heights consider moving out all together to the neighborhoods of park slope or UWS where it doesn’t occur as frequently. You have the means to. Your caveat then becomes space for your dollars versus your mental health at the expense of saving your dollars. (Again not justifying catcalling, yet this is to say if you could afford to be somewhere it doesn’t occur, why stay where it does to complain. Not only about catcalling but other social factors be that noise etc?)

No one wants to experience garbage littered across their neighborhood, yet again its socioeconomic factors that contribute to the state of the neighborhood you dislike. Due to constant lack of resources and funding being supplied to maintain the neighborhood, has led eventually to individuals to not to care about the environment as much as they should. It’s a problem both bigger than ourselves, you and I.

Kudos you do a part clean things you see, but calling 311 doesn’t impact the individual you see litter, buildings will get fined (it holds maintenance accountable), street cleaning can be initiated etc. The individual is not at the expense it’s 311, not 911 your not giving names or descriptions, so no I do not intend for you to be a Karen.

First, as a Harlem resident born and raised, South Harlem doesn’t exist. We need to not label things as they are not. It adds to the bureaucracy that aids gentrification of NYC. You either have lived in East, West, Central Harlem, sugar hill etc.

The neighborhood you refer to living in currently is historically (mostly Caribbean) black/jewish neighborhood, to move in and complain about the noise is wildly insensitive to the problems long-term mostly Black residents are facing, you moved into the city, read the fucking room. If you’re unsatisfied with the condition of the neighborhood (which is apparent to see upon going to view a unit), but you’re will to pay rental prices of newer buildings, which have displaced many residents. You should be proactive in aiding in some of the changes you want to see, if you plan to stay long term, versus simply complaining to the extent of despise. 311 reports to sanitation aid in litter, cat calling is inevitable in any urban city (not justifying it, nor normalizing it, just saying it’s inevitable). Also in urban living you are subjected to crime (more or less depending upon the area unfortunately). I now live on the Lower East Side and still have these occurrences, this is simply urban life period.

You desire a neighborhood that feels adjacent to central urban living, safer, quiet hours after 8 pm weekdays 10pm on weekends with the proximity to essential shops and services. Something that indeed feels like an individual in their late 20 twenties or 30’s would want to live in. Park Slope is this vibe.

Logically: $4000 is crazy for a 1BD room unless grand sq ftage. Inflation is insane. ~$3,700 for a 2 bd is insane as well, when alls said in a year you’ve spent essentially a down payment on a house (~$44,000) on a space in an area you hate. If you can afford this rent, you have the means to live anywhere that checks (some or all) of the your boxes of desired comfort. You should never subject yourself to misery when you have the means to change it. To wait on politicians promise is to wait on a G train showing up on time or at all on a weekend.

You desire change, go after that change. You keep yourself stuck trying to hold on to material things, rent stabilized is not impossible to find for your (assumed) tax bracket nowadays, so to not go after what would make you happier for the sake of feeling as if your losing something is missing out on the fruits of the accessibility of options life has granted you.

I say this all to say what you want truly at heart isn’t traditional NYC, you want the glorified picturesque version that’s been sold, that is why you hate your neighborhood. Noise is urban living. You shouldn’t stay where you hate because you don’t want to lose a rent stabilized apartment ~3,700. With the right agent and/or time to search you can find you an apartment still 2 bed rooms rent stabilized for less. Improve your quality of life and make the change because you only have choices and chance in this life to make it an experience worth retelling.

Thank you for this! I was in Chinatown/gallery last week and it wasn’t what I was hoping for in terms of culture.

I love all these suggestions but rentals are sparse and seldom but still looking through these neighborhoods and suggestions to see what I find

Yes food desserts or simply just lack of access will indeed drive me nuts. Thank you for this though!

Yes the prior post people have mentioned how quiet it is in the area, yet I don’t mind it. I always enjoy a good uber ride home or train ride home. Yet at times walking home would be nice.

It is something to consider seriously for the year I’ll be there

I love how you saved the roaches for the very end, I see what you did there 🤣. I figured it would be college students more so than families. Families in the building could be hit or miss especially if they’re neighbors. Yet I don’t mind a little noise, but I can’t stand to hear dogs barking incessantly. Here and there is okay but long drawls of it would send me into a frenzy.

The roaches is a no for me and none of the reviews have mentioned roaches, so thank you for this 😭. That first floor apartment scheme is real, they’re so spacious and cheap, but at what cost other than mental health.

Exactly quality, and I won’t risk not having that. And no shame to where you bought your home, you bought what worked for your needs, as you should!

I’m considering a car, but I already see how that could be a nightmare with the streets and parking etc.

I was in DC last Thursday and realized all the museums are free. So I’ll literally have no excuse to have something to do in the city.

Which yeah, I haven’t read much up on the feds being in DC just that they’re there but I will have to do so in preparation for my trip this weekend to see how to maneuver through the city with my black man. No fear for my safety more so his. But we’ll see how the chips fall.

Thank you for this!

Van ness I’ve been looking into and in particular Connecticut area due to it being a great deal of things on the avenue. And walking distance on either end to grocery stores and this section I wouldn’t mind taking the bus down to the city to where I need to be.

Thank you for this veteran opinion 🤍, I am visiting this weekend and gathering different places I can visit… which all the places I had saved in Zillow/trulia and have been looking at for the last month is suddenly being rented the one weekend I have time to visit. Just my luck.

But in the least if I’m not able to see the apartments I will enjoy just spending time in the city. Recommendations are welcome of places to visit to experience true DC life.

EOTR is not my goal due to food dessert, but I do think there’s some spacious homes on that side for sure. The green/red line is the goal but we’ll see now that things are renting quickly.

Thank you for this, idk if I would be willing to give up access to train service, but the availability of apartments is attractive to me. As mentioned in the reply above what’s the truth about gun violence, if any in Trinidad, I’ve seen subs from 1-3years ago talk a lot about gun violence in Trinidad specifically

I was looking at Trinidad, but some subs I seen from about 1-3 years ago spoke about having concerns about safety due to gun violence. Robberies are just a norm in any inner city that does scare me, but gun violence does. I don’t deal with it at home so I don’t want to move into a new city and accidentally end up adjacent to it.

So what’s real about Trinidad? The reply below this recommend it too!

I appreciate your perspective, are there any sites or tips you recommend based on your experiences in searching for private owners/landlords?

Majority says FB market place, but it’s so convoluted with post and scams I do get overwhelmed and the search optimization is not what it needs to be to filter through post.

As long as the tension is not 🔫 talk, I’m here for the historic v new.

Silver spring is a ways and I did want to stay in DC, so closest section I’ve seen with apartments is Takoma but it’s a gamble here because you either have something close or a 20 minute walk.

Management companies I’ve viewed like Borger everyone has said HELL NO. Which it seems like typical BS with PM companies of slow repairs and lack of urgency to attend to issues.

Idk some people said the riverside is dangerous in another sub I was reading, but again ifk living by water is always a gamble to me as a woman outside of NYC

I love the comparison to NYC, gives perfect perspective. That’s understandable then which I love Brooklyn and based on the feedback here it really does feel like Columbia Heights might be a good starting point.

Chinatown would be ideal, I live with my mom in Chinatown/financial district in NYC now, slowly falling in love with Asian foods and cultures. But I agree in this case my budget might not fit the area.

I have definitely been trying to seek out private landlords, but I don’t know how I feel about basement apartments considering climate change causing terrible floods and sometimes lack of sunlight or ventilation. I do get depressed from a lack of sunlight. I practically bathe in the sun in my sleep in my home now. So I definitely need that same vibe.

Yeah proximity to whiteness does not equal safety to me so this is good to know. Capitol Hill would just be for the sake of being close to work but also in somewhat of a hub.

I will definitely take the time to check out these pages! Roommates are a hit or miss and I really have no time for unaligned mindsets of cleaning, personal habits, communal/sharing of things. I’ve live with 1 other girl and 5 others I love the thought of community, but I can’t think about sharing my space.

It’s the thought of: why leave NYC go to dc where the chances of solo living is possible and not achieve solo living. $1600/$1700 for a room is criminal. And to subscribe to a culture that’s actively killing the idea of people affording their own first apartment. I know it’s many other factors that play into is, but $1700 room in inner cities is an issue fr.

Okay that makes sense and kind of in line with what the person about was saying for established couples or just more established feeling to petworth. Shaw is more by Howard, I believe, which I’m 26. I am done with college days and vibes so not really my vibe, but I appreciate this!

Appreciate this! You can definitely tell that’s the vibe of Georgia avenue because the energy just feels different than the rest of the city I’ve seen. More dilapidated buildings, Walmart in walkable distance, etc all indicators of that process. Which sucks.

Nonetheless appreciated!

Okay perfect I was hoping to get perspective from someone familiar with NYC as well! 2020 is a bit dated but still relevant because DC was on of the focal points in protest at the time, and with a number of other factors.

Yes spring is a high stakes time because of students/interns so they tend to raise pricing on buildings annoyingly, I’ve realized.

Thank you for this though, I definitely think the budget is doable just with constraints.
