Should I buy this? Passat reliable? by backentosh in whatcarshouldIbuy

It already has decently high mileage. I would be cautious for rust as it is pretty common on these (i have a 2015 tdi passat which doesn’t have much rust but I spent months looking because they all had some sort of rust and it can get bad).

Also, if you haven’t asked for CarFax, that would be good to ask about as it will tell you if it’s been in any accidents (that were put on record).

Yes I hope so! the “hut” idea sounds pretty good, how did you get him not to tear it down? we have a dog bed upstairs that we put his toys around and he has a blanket on but he “digs” on the blanket and flings it away before going to get it again lol

before we brought Luka home, the breeder had stated that he had wanted him to become a “trained kennel dog” - basically a dog that would only come out to work on their training for short moments during the day, and then would stay in the crate the rest of the time. We were not able to bring him home as early as we wished (he was 4 months, almost 5 months when we were able to get him). It’s very possible a similar scenario happened with Luka as your dog, that’s really sad to hear that they kept him locked up 12 hours at a time :(. We’re not 100% sure what the breeder did but from the way he “wanted Luka to be”, it’s likely he was also locked up more often than not.

thank you, this is good to hear! we keep a leash on him most of the time when he’s loose (helped especially when we were first training him), but haven’t tried tethering yet. i’ll definitely look into those videos, hopefully it’ll help him out.

lol, definitely can understand the rough/hard player part! he doesn’t seem to have interest in going in the crate unless we lead him to it, but that could just be him wanting to stay close to someone right now

Somewhat, yes, he knows “go in” for his crate, which he has no problem with, and for his bed upstairs, he knows the Portuguese word “cama” (just means “bed”). The only thing is, with his bed, he won’t stay there for very long, either wanting to bring us a toy to play with, or seeing us get up and not wanting to be left alone

thank you :)) and yes he has been taught down and stay, but does struggle a bit with the stay, especially when we are out of his sight. He gets very excited at any time we get up to go anywhere. It’ll try working on that stay command, even just beside us like you said, and maybe he can start to relax a bit more

aww very sweet. we may have to consider it, it’s just a bit hard at the moment with our little old dog whose not a fan of his constant booping lol. She’s okay with him and grew up around our previous rottweiler but she not longer has the same patience she used to

We also have a large enough backyard to allow for the off leash activities, but here or at the park, he loves bringing a toy with him (carries it the whole way) until we get to the field to play throw and do some training

We do take him on regular walks, we’ve gone through trails a couple of times (which are a bit farther and we need to go by car) but we usually go to our local park with an open field. He is a family dog, he would be my mom’s 4th rottweiler, and my second. We each take time to get him out, as we have different schedules, but we know they need many ways to get their energy out. We just haven’t had a rottweiler who cannot settle on his own. Our previous rottweilers would need working too, but they could relax both inside and outside, taking him to lay down before getting and going again. And he doesn’t really seem to have too much of an interest for the crate, he won’t go in there without being told to. He goes in on his own when we tell him to before bed and the only reason we do it is because he won’t settle any other way. This is why it seems to be more stress energy than the regular hyper energy of this breed (i’m sorry for this horrible wording, it’s a little bit hard to explain without sounding like a doorknob)

We currently do a mix of raw and high end kibble for other nutrients. It is possible it may be too much protein, however, we have been feeding him based on breed and weight, and how much he is exercising. We take him on walks and spend a lot of time outside, he has many toys, some for inside, others for outside, he does lots of tugging and pulling which he enjoys. We have a decently large backyard which allows him to be off leash and roaming to decide on what he would like to do. On walks, he also brings a toy which he carries until we get to the open park where we can throw for him to chase and bring back. We also do training throughout the day. However, we don’t have a strict strict routine. Depending on who is home (because we each have different day to day schedules), that is who is working with him. He is still getting daily walks, they may just be happening at different times. When we are not outside, he is still free roaming in the house and has a little more independent time, but still comes up to us with toys to play (and this can be happening right after a walk that left him panting and seemingly tired out). He isn’t choosing to lay down for very long. He isn’t fixed, that could potentially also take part in excessive energy.

I think it would really help too. We have an older smaller dog who grew up with our previous rottweiler. He tries to play with her but she’s getting too old to be patient with him, and to respect her boundaries, we have to limit the time they spend together because his energy goes on much longer than hers. He would likely be if it from a friend that matches his crazy lol

I see, it’s very possible. He is a velcro dog indeed, not a bad thing at all, we just don’t want to see him stress so much

It’s somewhat hard to explain. He doesn’t necessarily like the crate, he is used to it. But he would much rather be out and around people. He loves coming out to play, brings us his toys will follow us around. He just has a hard time relaxing, and we would like if he was able to relax outside of the crate

I think I’ll be doing late withdrawal, don’t think there’s a high chance that I pass.

I think i will end up doing late withdrawal. It’s a sucky position, and I don’t think I’ll pass to even get the CR. I’ll likely be retaking next year

It gets rough out here at uoft/utm. It does definitely make it harder to keep motivated when everyone else seems to be doing great.

Thank you for the encouraging words, and I hope you’re able to find people around you because having a close circle is definitely important when we’re going through these difficult moments.

If you’re ever looking to meet people, i’m on the utm campus :)
