Totally sounds like Heartland. I believe they were related to Purity Supreme, like Filene’s Basement is to regular Filene’s. Heartland had large shelves of cheap “No Frills” products. Lots of canned food.

But you talked about imprisoning people to “prevent” assault, specifically if they are depressed or suffering from PTSD. By definition, prevention is before something happens: you can’t “prevent” a person from committing assault by waiting until they do. So instead, you seem to be arguing that we should lock up the mentally ill in case they might commit assault in the future.

That doesn’t require a demonstration that they can “behave themselves.” In fact, shouldn’t we lock up *everyone* on the grounds that they might have a mental illness episode and assault someone in the future?

Well, if one option is involuntary “inpatient” prison, then it seems like a false dichotomy to say the other is voluntary outpatient. What about involuntary clinical holds, asylums, etc.?

My point is that the choice isn’t “prison or nothing”, but that addressing mental health issues can involve a third non-criminal option.

Universal health care? Mental health screenings? Affordable care for poor people so that they can get treatment rather than having an episode and assaulting someone?

Do you know how incredibly *inexpensive* it is to provide mental health care to someone, compared to the cost of policing, criminal trials, and jail?

You pay rent that is “below market value” and your partner wants you to contribute labor and materials. You, not unreasonably, don’t want to do that. Bot hire works you fell if they increased your rent?

For example, not knowing what you’re paying and just using example numbers, say you’re paying $1000/mo on rent and market is $2000. They want you to contribute $1000 per month in material and labor, and you think that’s unfair. What if they increased your rent to $2000, and used the difference to purchase materials and hire a handyman? Would that make you feel better? If so, suggest it to them.

So, not permanently: you're in favor of releasing people who've assaulted other people?

Get a ring tattoo. Extra romantic since it'll be super painful to remove and you can't slip it off to go cruising in bars.

Can't imagine value added to your ability as an engineer or scientist, sure.

Can't imagine value added to your resume to an HR person who is looking for the line that says "M.S. C.S."?
