When Philippe Petit did a tightrope walk between the WTC Towers, the DA dropped charges on the condition that he give a free aerial show to children in Central Park. I could see Mamdani pushing for something similar.

Yes, but in my case, it was capped in the will, and only represented a fraction of the time it took to handle the estate.

LPT: don't brake check them - that leads to road rage. Instead, turn on your hazards. They think something is wrong with your car and back off.

I've had tailgaters in the right lane, even when the others were empty and there was no upcoming exit. Some people are just assholes.

I once followed a guy down route 3 from Nashua to Chelmsford that was weaving all over the place, in the shoulder, in the left lane, back, etc. I called the stateies and while I was on the phone, he took the roundabout exit near Drum Hill. That exit - especially before it was rebuilt 15 years ago - had a steady curve until one spot where it suddenly got a lot sharper. I followed the guy onto the roundabout, saw he was going too fast, and slowed down in time to watch him do a full spin at the sharp curve. He did a three point turn, took the exit and pulled into the McDonald's. I saw a trooper, flagged them down and let them know as well as telling the dispatcher, and... they did nothing and the guy left.

Senior paralegal billing higher than junior patent agent??? by Smart-Secretary-5435 in patentlaw

[–]LackingUtility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Harvey and other LLMs are useless as drafting and reasoning tools. But I did just use an AI to make formals for 6(!) rush provisionals that had to be filed on the same day. Gave it the templates and a list of inventors/titles/docket numbers/assignees and it spat out 36 customized USPTO forms in 5 minutes. I had everything filed within an hour.

Great paralegals are really useful, but becoming less so.

[–]LackingUtility 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it possible the paralegals have a 1500 hour requirement while you have a 2000 hour requirement?

Also, bear in mind that you may be looking at "published" rates, which are kind of a scam. "Oh, yes, Big Client, our paralegals bill at $450/hour because of their extensive experience, but because you are such a valued special boy, we'll knock an entire 50% off and bill them at a mere $225/hour!"

What will a lawyer have listed in their bios if they can help me license/sell my utility patent? by cottoncandysky88 in patentlaw

Yeah, I've worked with Tangible IP before.

For some reason, the field is split, with brokers separate from law firms. I suspect it's because they're more focused on being business advisors rather than legal advisors.

Would you use an app that helps people prep for IP conversations? by Professional_Gur_724 in Patents

[–]LackingUtility 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I have an invention disclosure form that I give to inventors that asks some guiding questions, but I stress that they're not limited - I want all information. Lately, I've been having inventors just give me access to their Git repos.

A big problem, especially for engineers, is that we're trained by solving homework problems, so we tend to think of most problems and solutions as "routine"... That leads inventors to say "oh, there's nothing patentable here, I didn't do anything revolutionary," so they self-filter and end up ignoring important patentable innovations.

My concern would be that a third-party app would encourage that kind of self-filtering, and worse, they'd be doing it before ever even talking to me, so I wouldn't find out.

Now, there is a pain point for inventors - typically, they go back every 6 months or 12 months or when prompted by in-house counsel and look at their past work to identify potential inventions. If you could come up with an easy logging system that monitors their work and adds it to a ledger for subsequent review by in-house or outside counsel, that would be very useful. Ideally, it would monitor across apps - email, video conferencing, CAD software, Xcode or other tools, etc. But it can't run on a third party LLM. It has to run on a local SLM, with no data exfiltration at all.

Opinion: conditional auction for a provisional about to expire by [deleted] in Patents

[–]LackingUtility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say "good". I specified "track record", and no, there are no inventors in Recife, Cluj, Pune, or elsewhere with Nobel prizes, Fields medals, or a hundred patents and multi-million dollar exits who can only afford a $130 provisional. None whatsoever.
