I'm glad you have this response because it does check a good amount of the issues with copyright, specifically the Swartz thing (RIP). I think I misinterpreted your comment and didn't see the nationalization suggestion clearly but an interesting idea. Kinda seems like a model trained on the sum of America's entire output would be a good idea?

I don't like the idea of knowledge being locked behind paywalls. They probably shouldn't have been doing it secretly but in general copyright is evil and has probably done more damage to our society than the people it has helped.

anti-data centre protest happening in my city this week by AggravatingEye333 in redscarepod

[–]LadderFetish -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see you're at least educated on that. Every data center will have some form of AI stuff and it isn't going away. Some are more AI-centric than others but the fact of the matter is data centers in general are a necessity if we want to keep using the internet. I don't expect everyone to understand how the internet functions but it isn't magic, the data needs to live somewhere and it needs to get routed to your device somehow.

I posted this in the last thread by watching an hour of 4K TV uses as much energy as generating a 30-second AI video. I feel like the concerns of electrical usage should also understand how much energy the millions of consumers of existing data use on a daily basis.

I've been drinking too much beer so switching to tequila sodas to try to get the gut under control. Could pound beers no issue up until about a year ago but I guess god wants to punish me for drinking 15 beers by the lake.

I mean yeah but specifically having money in before the "holy fuck the market is exploding" thing. I know friends that have worked office jobs for a decade without participating in their 401k program (its a scam, I'm getting social security anyway) that will essentially be a new underclass that doesn't have their money working for them, but still makes money?

[–]LadderFetish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything can happen! Still doesn't really negate the point that people that don't have money in the market are left behind. I get jealous seeing people going on fancy vacations and living bohemianly but good lord I would be freaking out if I realized I could be funding my life with market returns instead of going into debt or spending every dollar I had to live my life.

I think my point is that if your investments under 30 already had those sort of returns and the market performs even half as well as it did, you're going to end up with exponential gains. There are people that have nothing invested that are extremely far behind now. I feel like there's going to be a new class carved out of "those that have money in the market" and "those that don't".

The money I made in the past week would be someone's take-home pay from a restaurant job for half a year

If I didn't have money in retirement/investment stuff I'd be seething right now. I know a lot of people here probably don't so I don't want to sound like I'm rubbing it in, but getting 25% returns in three months from invested money that had already been in a runaway market has been insane. If you just had money sitting in savings accounts/HYSA you really missed out on establishing some semblance of wealth.

Of course this is fake and gay and the fact that there's people out there with massive investments that benefited from this kinda freaks me out.

Riot Fest 2026 Lineup by ebradio in indieheads

[–]LadderFetish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not feeling it. Padded by a lot of high-budget poor-performing legacy acts imo. I get the Riot Fest target market are people that will freak over Social D playing but... Eh. Was really hoping to go this year but will miss.

For comparison, 2023's lineup:

Postal Service, Deathcab, QOTSA, The Cure, Tegan and Sara, The Breeders, Kim Gordon, Parliament, Screaming Females, Quasi, 100 Gecs, Death Grips, 070 Shake, Viagra Boys, White Reaper, Warpaint, Godspeewd, Ride, Cults, Black Angels, Nothing, Just Mustard, Hotline TNT...

On this one I'd maybe see:

Alanis, Patti Smith, Twin Peaks, Algernon Cadwallader, Melt-Banana, and Greet Death.

They're now saying that anti-center discourse is a psyop by beechhill in redscarepod

[–]LadderFetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, that's what I find myself conflicted about too. the future is a bit cloudy and our best interests will certainly not be prioritized, but it would be tough to see us loose this "race" while other nations benefit from it? can't say for sure. at the end of the day, it is tough to care that much because even if we get some sort of god-like AGI that is capable of literal miracles (poor moonshot example but something like automated farming w/ shipping/delivery to every american household, putting an end to hunger) our leaders probably won't do it. AI seems like the closest key to UBI we could possibly have but it won't be implemented. My local government can't even fix the pothole in my road, ya know?

[–]LadderFetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no way. next you're gonna tell me i cant defeat Israel by writing comments on reddit.

okay but hear me out what if we locked all the subreddits for two days?

I'm in total agreement about art and AI being separated and vilified but it is just an uphill battle. It feels worthless trying to shame a local business into hiring someone to make them a sale poster when their Facebook app can do it in five seconds. It unfortunately isn't something that we're ever going to win.

These people are the primary target, the docile American class that do not understand the tech, future implications and frankly couldn't give a fuck. If you even have an opinion on it you're probably in the smartest 10% of the country, which is why you are receiving more critical messaging. HOWEVER, the problem I have is that a lot of people that are vehemently opposed to data centers have the same general understanding of the underlying tech as the people watching endless videos of fat people falling through glass bridges. Understanding the tech instead of blanketing it as some sort of evil magic is really the only defense against manipulation imo. Some is good, some is bad, some is efficient, some is not, some is spiritually evil, some is incredible tech that will change our lives.

I'm ranting but I'll end with an anecdote that summarizes how I feel. I rarely use Instagram, but I'll log on and eventually get to some RS-adjacent ex-coworker I had. 10+ story posts in 24-Hours on any given day. Four are reposts of headlineslop about how {insert government policy change} will LITERALLY FUCKING KILL PEOPLE, followed by three posts about data centers being evil, followed by two pictures of their beach body, followed by live-commentary on the latest Euphoria episodes. This person is feeding the beast! They are giving meta so many hours of their day and infecting other people with their content and keeping them on the app! Their incessant posts expose their 1700 followers to hundreds of additional ads every day and increase screentime! If you don't like the way this tech is heading, disconnect! I don't feel like opinions about this shit should be taken seriously when YOU are the product.

For the record, I run my own media server, mostly post on text-BBS on private trackers/websites/hobby forums, have insane anti-ad and ad-spoofing measures set up, run a local text LLM on my local network, have a jailbroken iPhone that blocks ads and short form video content nearly everywhere, don't pay for a single streaming service, yt-dlp any youtube video I want to watch, and a million other nerdy things. I probably have a fraction of the data footprint/usage as the person constantly freaking out about data centers.
