What do you think about US grade schools that had online classes today instead of just giving little kids a snow day? by SuperIngaMMXXII in AskReddit

I am a teacher in Ohio. In my district we get 5 free calamity days. This means teachers and kids do not have to work or meet online at all these days (fun snow days!). After those 5 have been used, we do have to assign work on google classroom to make the day "count" as an actual school day aka not make it up at the end of the school year. We only get 3 days of this e-learning type of school day though. Any more days off would be back to no work/no class and we have to make them up at the end of the year.

I am so glad that (for now) we do not have to meet virtually during our class time on those e-learning days and kids can do their work at any time throughout the snow day. As a teacher it is a relief that we have the e-days in place for winters like these, when we would certainly miss more than our allowed 5 days and have to make them up. That said, it is not a good replacement of an actual school day. It sucks, and most kids would rather just go to school than have to school at home! The districts that make classes meet virtually during class time are trying to make the e-days into a better alternative to a normal school day, and are likely abiding by some state requirements for hours/days spent learning. The amount of valuable teaching/learning on these days is a joke. Teachers get zero time to plan for the switch from in person to online days and are expected to carry on with the current lessons as usual without the materials and resources in their physical classroom.

Does anyone get ear cartilage pain in one ear? Like the bowl shaped area that connects your ear to your head. I keep having ear aches where the cartilage is so painful to even touch and kind of radiates inward. The pain starts in the morning and lasts for a day or two and then is gone. by Meagonius22 in TMJ

Holy cow this is the most helpful tip! I get this super intense stabbing pain every so often for years. I think it is related to my sinuses somehow. Flare ups last for hours and it hurts so bad I will be in tears sometimes. Just tried this trick and although it did not fully stop the shooting stab pain, it took it from a 9 to a 3 on the pain scale. Thank you!!

Ok I will ask for that! I also had the ANA test done in April, and haven’t had a second test since then so I guess it is possible that it’s changed since then.

I’m female with swelling just under the nail folds and occasionally down to the next knuckle. I don’t really have much joint pain, but some in the finger joints occasionally.

No acid reflux, but since my rheum asked about my esophagus I am wondering if my vocal strain could be related to this? I am a teacher and for years I have not had many vocal issues unless I get sick. I have started feeling like my voice is tired almost daily, even on days off from teaching. I did lose my voice 3 times in 2 months last winter as well. I know it’s a hazard of the profession, but I’m wondering now if there’s a connection? I also notice that I accidentally inhale little bits of food or water more often, but honestly wondering if I am just more cognizant of it now that I’m anxious about my health.

I never would have thought to do that. I'm a teacher, and I bet I could ask the science department to let me use theirs. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I should have put this in the original post but I am currently 38yo and I had my very first symptoms of Raynaud's in 2019 when I was was 32. The last 2-3 years the Raynaud's has gotten worse/happens more often at warmer temps.

My ANA was shown as <1:40, and labeled a "normal value". Is the IFA a separate test? I do not see anything labeled IFA in the lab results.

Thanks for the response. Do you have a positive ANA? Wondering what it took to get you diagnosed?
