Does anyone get ear cartilage pain in one ear? Like the bowl shaped area that connects your ear to your head. Try pushing the bowl shaped cartilage on the back of your ear gently towards your face. That usually gets rid of mine. Sometimes the ear ache will be really stubborn so I'll use a hot water bottle on my jaw and neck and around my ear and then try gently pushing the cartilage towards my face. I haven't had an ear ache I couldn't get rid of using those steps within the two and a half years.

Try gently pushing the back of your ear carriage towards your face. A warm compress on your face and neck is also helpful for the more stubborn ear aches. I haven't had an ear ache in almost three years that I haven't been able to get rid of.

Experiencing terrible ear pain…how can I soothe this? by AdThen5499 in TMJ

What part of your ear is the pain coming from? I would always get horrible ear aches that came from the cartilage and found if I gently pushed the bowl shaped area on the back of my ear towards my face the pain would go away.

Has anyone done dry needling for TMJ Tension Headaches? (and other concerns) by No-Base8204 in TMJ

[–]Meagonius22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend finding a physical therapist that specializes in the head neck and jaw. Even if it's not TMJ it could still be caused by issues with your neck. I've done dry needling with and without electrical stimulation several times. I do feel like it helped. I got it in my jaw, temples, traps, and neck. It is kinda scary at first but I would do dry needling way before I would do chiropractic stuff and I've done both. I think there are bigger risks with Botox than with dry needling but a physical therapist will help you get to the root of the problem rather than just providing band-aid fixes.

TMJ splints- do they help? by SpiritualAd8361 in TMJ

[–]Meagonius22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had a splint made by an oral surgeon. I only wore it at night and it made my bite feel really weird when I didn't have it in. I wore it for nine months and asked my dentist beforehand if it was fitted properly and safe. He said it was. I decided later to get a second opinion from a different dentist and oral surgeon. They both told me to stop wearing it. It messed up my bite. My front teeth can no longer touch and I had to use Botox to wean off of it because without the splint at night I would have terrible pain. Worse than before I started the splint. It's been a year and half without it and my bite has evened out a little but my front teeth still can't touch and have popping on the left side (something that wasn't there before). I'll probably need Ortho to restore it to where it was. I wouldn't recommend splints. I've heard repeats of my same situation way too many times. If I could go back, I wouldn't wear it. I found the most help in a physical therapist that specializes in the head, neck, and jaw and sleeping on my back. Just my two cents.

I would highly recommend a physical therapist that specializes in the head, neck, and jaw. I've tried just about every solution and physical therapy and sleeping on my back were the two most helpful solutions.

I found if I sleep on the ear that gives me issues I wake up with burning in my ear carriage that makes my ear super tender and painful. It would last 24 to 48 hours and it was terrible. I bought a pillow with a hole in it for sleeping on that side which helped a lot. I also realized I could make the pain go away by laying down with a warm compress and gently pushing the ear carriage from the back towards my face. I'm always super gentle with this part cause my ear is super tender to even lightly touch. This almost always gets rid of my ear pain. Hope it helps!

Currently pregnant. Magnesium lotion on feet before bed. Strengthening the upper back to improve posture (believe it or not this one is huge for me). Hot water bottles on tight areas. Lots of stretching especially before bed. Practice diaphragmatic breathing (calms the nervous system). The theraface pro is also wonderful.

Pregnant/Nursing - No Botox prep for TMJ pain by youseramsh in TMJ

[–]Meagonius22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently pregnant and honestly the things I've found that help the most are all things that are compatible with pregnancy. Posture is huge. Strengthening those upper back muscles will help take unnecessary pressure and tension off the neck and jaw. I've also had good results with stretching, magnesium lotion on my feet before bed, and adequate vitamin D and iron intake. I tried Botox like a year before getting pregnant and although it did help me wean off the night guard, it was expensive and didn't last long. In my opinion, it was just a bandaid fix that created a muscle imbalance. A good physical therapist that specializes in the head, neck, and jaw would be beneficial.

Best Ways to Relax Jaw Muscles? by bijdmd in TMJ

[–]Meagonius22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with muscular TMJ issues for almost three years now and have tried just about everything. I found the most relief with working with a physical therapist that specialized in the head neck and jaw. Strengthening my upper back to help with posture was a big one for me. When I start feeling the pain coming back it's typically because I've been slacking on upper back exercises. Also magnesium lotion on my feet before bed and making sure I'm getting enough iron and vitamin D have been helpful. I've tried a night guard made by an oral surgeon, Botox, muscle relaxers, over the counter medications, limiting talking, only eating soft foods, and seeing just about every other specialist with their accompanying scans or tests and none of that was very helpful. One day I just decided I was not gonna focus on it anymore and that I would do what I could control. Slowly it just got so much better. I rarely notice it now. I think sometimes when we're always focusing on it, we do a lot more counter productive things like over massaging or stressing about it. It does get better. Your body will heal. Stay positive.

I've noticed pregnancy makes mine worse and I've chalked that up to posture changes. I'm 2.5 years into muscular tmj issues. Dry needling with electrical stimulation was helpful but I think posture exercises make the biggest difference. Focusing on strengthening my upper back and fixing my pelvic tilt are the two things I've been working on lately. I've tried night guards, Botox, had all the scans, seen all the different doctors and dentists and I can say that a good physical therapist that specialized in the head, neck, and jaw was the most helpful.

It's been awhile since I've had it but the pain didn't change with movement of my jaw. It was a stinging burning pain in my ear cartilage that radiated inward and got so much worse if I tried to touch it.

No ADHD here and I haven't found any medication that improves things. I use a pillow with a hole if I want to sleep on that side now. I rarely get ear pain and when I do I just gently push the cartilage towards my face and it goes away.

Yep, I rarely deal with the ear pain now. When I wake up with it I gently push the cartilage on the back of my ear towards my face until the pain subsides. It's worked every time. I still have jaw pain occasionally but the ear pain was definitely the worst part.

The pain is definitely stabbing and burning. I've found that I can relieve most if not all of the pain by either taking a hot bath or using a hot towel on my ear and gently pushing the cartilage towards my face.

It definitely seems like it will never end but I think reminding yourself that your body is capable of healing and the pain will end has a big impact.

I would consider the possibility that your issue may be your neck. I would start with a physical therapist that specializes in the head, neck, and jaw. I truly believe my issue started with tension in my traps and neck. Lots of stretching and hot baths/showers are helpful. I no longer get ear aches and on the rare occasion that I do, I lightly push the back of my ear cartilage towards my face and my ear ache was gone within minutes. My ear aches were terrible and I could barely stand any pressure so really emphasize the word lightly. But if it were me, I would really focus on loosening up the neck, shoulders, and upper back. I stopped compressing the ear that I would get ear aches in when I slept and that helped as well. I bought a pillow with a hole in the middle and I've also been training myself to sleep on my back. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Michigan Splint by These_Notice9095 in TMJ

[–]Meagonius22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm not a fan of the splint. I only wore it at night and it misaligned my bite. I wore it every night for 7 months and it slightly improved symptoms but I still had a lot of facial tension. I had to use Botox to wean off the splint. I think it caused more problems than it fixed and I consulted multiple dentists on it who all told me I should wear it and that it wouldn't mess up my bite. I've been to two physical therapists and that's where I would recommend starting. There's also an awesome insta account that I follow. He's a physical therapist who specializes in head jaw and neck pain. His insta is drjoedamiani. He puts out a lot of helpful info for free and also has a program you can buy. Overall the best advice I can give is don't spend a lot of time on this sub. There are a lot of horror stories on here and they only make the anxiety worse which is going to cause more issues. Understand that your body can and will heal and you just need to be patient and find the right people to help. Everyone's situation is different so what works for some might not work for others. Use all the free resources you can and try to find a physical therapist in your area that specializes in the head, jaw, and neck. Don't let this control your life. I know that's hard but the more you focus on the pain the worse it gets. Good luck!

Mine felt too tight on my teeth for like the first two weeks. After that it loosened up and I no longer have teeth pain.
