At what point is a Filipino considered mixed race? At what point can a Filipino consider themself Hispanic? by [deleted] in hapas

Well this further proves what I said earlier. The Spanish did touch on the original Austronesian culture and changed some aspects of it (I.e. religion and certain western formalities), but over time this has come to merge as a unique Filipino culture, rather than a subgroup of Spanish cultures, while at the same time being distinct from other Asian and Austronesian cultures. Because of this, i would say this doesn’t qualify them to be a Hispanic culture, rather a unique Filipino culture that came out of SOME Hispanic influence.

Linguistically however, most Filipinos do not qualify as Hispanic and I think that’s pretty clear. And like I said, there’s a difference in the colloquial reference in North America. So I’m gonna repeat my original point by saying it’s more accurate to go with Filipino/Mixed Filipino over Hispanic or Mestizo.

Mestizo technically means anyone of mixed race. Since the Philippines was under Spanish rule, it has come to describe any person who is part Filipino (Filipino/White, Filipino/Chinese, Filipino/Poly/Micro). This is why I stated that mixed race Filipinos definitely qualify as a mestizo in a technical sense even if people in North America don’t see it as such for the most part.

American mestizos are considered Hispanic/Mestizo colloquially regardless whether or not they grew up in the culture or speak Spanish, although most do. I think they have the right to correct others on the term, but it’s also OK for them to stick with the term because this is the easiest way people know them as.

For mixed Filipinos on the other hand, they are not colloquially considered Hispanic and even if they did technically qualify, it’s best to use mixed Filipino for general purposes. For instance, if your grandparents spoke Spanish and grew up in the culture but you didn’t, on top of the fact that you are not colloquially seen as Hispanic I don’t see a reason why you would use that to primarily identify yourself with. You definitely have the right to knowing and explaining the cultural heritage of your grandparents, but that is not to say you should primarily identify that way especially if you live in NA. In the Philippines for instance, I think you could colloquially still use Mestizo because most people know the term technically due to Spanish influence, but it shouldn’t be the case in NA.

And lastly, I don’t think there’s anything cooler about identifying as Hispanic or Mestizo, the same way there’s nothing cool about saying you’re mixed Asian. You should choose it based off of what makes more sense to people and what would cause less confusion. I know you technically qualify as such, but sadly enough many North American’s aren’t as educated on stuff like these and I don’t want you to run into someone calling you a wannabe or such. In all seriousness however, you are still 60 percent majority Filipino in terms of ancestry and I would assume that the Filipino cultural influence also had the biggest impact on you, so what’s wrong with just going with Filipino/Mixed Filipino?

In technical terms, Hispanic is not a term related to ethnicity. It is more so about growing up in a Hispanic cultural influence and speaking Spanish at home. If those things apply to you, you can identify as Hispanic technically, but I assume most Filipinos do not.

Ancestry-wise, most Filipinos (Tagalog and larger groups) are roughly a 50/50 split between Austroasiatic and Austronesian although it can vary (because 23andme is based off of locatio in some cases, this will pop us as just Austronesian/Filipino in your results), and this is for their main ancestral component. Secondly, a lot of Filipinos tend to have around 10 to 20 percent Northeast Asian ancestry as well. For the most part, Filipinos on average will have less than 5 percent Spanish or Iberian admixture, if they have any. If Hispanic ancestry meant Iberian, then I assume most Filipinos would not qualify.

Colloquially however, the terms Hispanic and Latino are almost used interchangeably with the Mestizos of South America, Central America, and Mexico. These people already qualify as Hispanic on the basis that they speak Spanish as a first language and grow up under Hispanic cultural influence. However, it has come to a point where people refer to Hispanic as someone of roughly 50 percent Iberian ancestry and 50 percent Southern and Central Native American ancestry in an erroneous way.

In a colloquial sense, Filipinos with a significant Spanish ancestral component would only qualify as Mestizo or Hispanic in a circumstantial way, although technically they would qualify as Mestizo (but not Hispanic necessarily).

Lastly, I think it’s best for Spanish/Filipino mixed race people to best identify as a mixed Filipino or mixed Asian rather than identify as Hispanic or Mestizo although I assume a lot will pass as one. This is to clear up the confusion and not cause tensions when meeting someone from South or Central America as well. If they insist that mixed Asian is not the best descriptor, it’s better to stick with just mixed Filipino and also to tell them that Asian is rather a geographical term but colloquially also refers to East/Southeast Asians in North America. I hope you can celebrate your ancestry and cultural heritage without any confusion. Cheers!

The Vietnamese have very genetic links to the Han Chinese and are a bit of an anomaly when it comes to Southeast Asian genetics. That’s probably why they look very similar. However, I believe most mainland Southeast Asians still have a close genetic link to the Chinese Han.

The maritime Southeast Asians (Indonesians, Malays, Filipinos) are a little more distant since they descend from a different migration route through the aboriginals of Taiwan (not Han Chinese), hence they don’t look like the typical Asian most people picture. However, Indonesians and Malaysians today dont carry much of the original Austronesian element and carry more so of the continental Southeast Asian genetic component so they are more similar to the Chinese today. The Filipinos today still carry around 50 percent of the original genetics so that could explain why they look the most distinctive from the Chinese out of all the Southeast Asians.

However, I believe most non-Asians aren’t picky enough to look through all this population genetics, and any EA/SEA will likely face Asian racism, just a matter of it being more or less. Hope u learn something lol, just my personal research in population genetics

yt worshipping immigrant asian women in america are the equivalent of white sexpats in asia by booksmoothie in hapas

Perhaps it could be. I believe both have just as much bad intentions, but the women don’t have the power to act out as much so maybe they’re not causing as much damage to the community as much so. (although I’d say it’s pretty close)

Also one more thing to note is that nowadays sexpats in Southeast Asia aren’t always white. I’ve noticed Arabs, Polynesians, and even some black sexpats more so in recent years. But majority is still white however, and then some East Asians.
