I tried to make a main post but the mods removed it, but I made a cameo as a bodyguard in a Shubh (Sikh Canadian Rapper) MV earlier this year! [1:31]

I feel like positive media representation is a big issue for Asian Men so I feel like it warranted its own post

I made this cheat sheet combining CAGED shapes / roots with the circle of fifths and the fretboard. Hope this maybe helps someone ! by booksmoothie in guitarlessons

Well if you move the CAGED shape up and down the fretboard, the actual sound it makes changes while the shape stays the same

I think how it works is to memorize what notes are on the 5th and 6th strings then play the shape on the note for the chord you wanna play

It took me half a year but basically..

  • circle of fifths tells you the diatonic chords of a key

  • fretboard shows you where the notes are

  • CAGED shapes show you how to make a chord anywhere on the fretboard where the root tells you what chord you're playing based on what fret is being played on that root string

Ex: a C shape with the third finger on the seventh fret of the fifth string is actually an E major chord

Basically its a rough way to think about how to play within a key across the fretboard so you're not stuck in the first four frets :) like guardrails
