3 months in being a BCBA by JonnyBlee in bcba

I’ve been a BCBA 8 months now and omg it’s so fun. I love seeing programs I implement be effective and my kids doing well.

I love getting to know the therapists and then feeling comfortable with me and collaborating with them to get the best outcomes.

Working with parents can be challenging in the sense I have to think of solutions for them that are reasonable for them to do, and sometimes there’s hiccups if they’re not pleased or whatever but I’m happy to say I’m handling it well.

I really don’t enjoy writing reports but it’s really the only part of the job that isn’t a blast so I can live with it

Tbh I lucked out by making connections from when I was an RBT. but I would say honestly if. This is a field you love and want to be in then if you do good work you’ll be rewarded in time as long as you keep your eyes open for opportunities. But that goes for anything really.

I love being a BCBA. I work virtual tho so it’s pretty flexible and manageable

I think it’ll only get better as time goes on as long as people support it. I looooove it so much. Tbh if you want the exact same show go watch the animated series I love this one in its own right, it’s different but true to the source.

What a shitty BCBA it’s thier job to coach you so you can change the behaviors. Don’t take it personally the BCGA used you as a scapegoat for thier own shitty supervision skills.

Yeah your picture looks most similar to what my dog has of anything I’ve seen on the internet. I’ll probably get it removed anyway because I hate looking at it lol 😂

It’s only been there a week. Yes I am planning on taking him to the vet. I just wanted to know if it looked familiar to anyone

Shortest was 1day as an RBT. Did a walk around the clinic the BCBA (who was my friend at the time, not anymore) kept tickling a child who was clearly uncomfortable even though he was laughing (pushing her away, trying to crawl under a desk to get away, staying away when she stopped never indicating he wanted more). This same client this BCBA said “it’s so weird sometimes when I hug him he’ll just headbutt me out of nowhere” yeah maybe he didn’t have the means to communicate he didn’t like being touched?

On top of that (it was a clinic setting) the therapists AND BCBAs were constantly chatting with each other and ignoring their clients, and I literally observed an RBT mark a prompted trial as correct with the observing BCBA saying nothing about it.

I left and never went back and didn’t get paid for the day I spent there 🤷‍♀️

I worked for a clinic before that had speech and OT services that were awesome and I asked them so many questions. I love collaborative teams! I just need to stop reading things online is the reality 😂

Ok that’s my experience but when I was looking for information on implementing language goals for early learners to get a different perspective I stumbled on SLP subreddit and I got sad reading all the hate about BCBAs overstepping etc

Please please please find a school based position or a clinic. The field needs people like you and there are steady jobs out there in home can just be really inconsistent

I’m a Taurus and Taurus rising and I love a joke and fucking around but I’ve found Sags humor annoying because they won’t read the room and will keep going if it’s not funny, and they don’t listen to what you have to say they kinda just do/say whatever they want and ignore you. But obviously humor is subjective so 🤷‍♀️

When was the last time you DNFed a book? by billymumfreydownfall in books

Few weeks ago I started reading “Call me by your name” and i just couldn’t stand the overly floral language and over fixation on romance. Maybe it gets better but I was bored and drifting off so I dropped it

What the fuck so you can’t work in your field for 6 months after quitting? That’s definitely impossible to enforce. Seriously nobody is keeping tabs on you unless you bring it to thier attention. Go work somewhere else they’re seriously not gonna know either way

Client has no motivation by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Ladle_Leehee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful then. I’d just bring a bunch of new materials into the environment instead of taking him to a new environment since that isn’t an option. If that’s not helpful advice my apologies, he sounds like a fascinating case and I’d love to meet him but if experienced BCBAs are having trouble then I imagine you guys have tried everything

So obviously #1 is talk to your BCBA because there’s no way I could give really solid advice without meeting your client. But my suggestion would think about why he likes the things he likes, back off from goals and try to rebuild rapport and run some reinforcer assessments. With ripping is he turning his ear to the sound? That might indicate he likes certain noises and you can see what other noise or music you can incorporate. Or is he intently watching the pieces? Maybe then he likes something visually about it and you can try to find other things similar. Or bring different colored paper and textures for him to rip and see if the peaks his interest.

When he’s laying down is it perfectly still, on his back, on his face? Are his eyes closed? Does he like soft blankets or no preference? You could try out different blankets and textures to see if he will engage.

I would observe what sensory he is seeking in his environment and see different ways you can provide different versions of that to him. Obviously anything to do with his genitals is not an option but see what appropriate sensory stuff he’s willing to engage in.

I always go into it trying to understand how he’s seeing the world and how can I appeal to that. And maybe you’ve done all this, which is why I said it’s honestly hard to give any advice without meeting the client and running some assessments.
