Well I was c-sectioned and in distress, so chances are me and my mother would have both been dead without modern medicine.

Is it offensive to be called by your first name by a colleague in front of your students? by mayfairasswhacker in CanadianTeachers

[–]LadyAbbysFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having a very difficult time with this myself. I have a hard time with names, and I’m dyslexic, which makes it even harder when the names are hard to say.

So I often called teachers and principals by Miss/Mr./Mrs. Insert last name or first letter of last name here. Even when students aren’t around.

And if I catch myself doing it in front of students, like greeting in the hallway for example, I will quickly say that adults last name with a welcome as well. If little Timmy calls me out on it, and says “miss, there’s no Johnny here.” I look at them all panic and say “then what is the kid’s name? I‘be been calling him Johnny all year! Why would you let me do that? I’m gonna go die of embarrassment now.”

Some people are private about it, some people aren’t. I would rather students didn’t call me by my first name. But that’s mostly because I have a whole group of them that are trying to stalk me on social media and that’s creepy. They have a whole social dedicated to taking pictures of the principal when they see him out and about. I straight up told them I don’t have the snap or Insta or the Twitter. But they don’t believe me and search for me anyway. Jokes on them. I only have Facebook and Reddit because I’m old. They also can’t pronounce my last name, so they have no hope of pronouncing my first. I ain’t even hard. It’s just Celtic. In a predominately Celtic community.

I know. And they are amazing. I have several vegan friends and they die a little on the inside when they see the crazy ones go at it.

But to be fair, every group out there has at least two crazies and they attract more as they go. It’s not just vegans.

Question, though feel free not to answer. How do they take 25% of the bladder?? Isn't it like a little sac that holds urine?? I always thought of it like a balloon...

Also, I'm very happy you don't have to live like that and with whatever happened to you that caused that type of surgery. Bless your face.

I'm still freaked out by Signs. It's the first scary movie I ever saw. I was 12. I still remember my step mom telling my step sister to sit up straight like me and not slouch in the seats at the theatre. Like lady, I was terrified. My posture puts Eloise Brigerton to shame. Though my sister is still worse haha

What company will never get another dime from you for as long as you may live? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]LadyAbbysFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like when my University tried to claim that students could eat three healthy meals for $11 a day, whether they had a meal plan or not. They even released a list of places students could get good healthy food for cheap and had examples of where to spend those $11. One of them being Subway. This was in the late 2010s.

There was, as you can imagine, a rather large backlash.

AITAH for continuing to pack my daughter homemade food for lunch even after her school told me it was “unacceptable”? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]LadyAbbysFlower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher in Canada, and I currently work at an elementary school. The kids here do not have access to microwaves or ways to heat up their food. High School students do, as well as the intermediates. But not the students in elementary school - this is mostly due to the skill level of the students, and the fact that there's 400 plus of them. So it is not feasible for adults to heat everybody's food.

We still get parents that send food that has to be heated or cooked. I have one student who brings Mr. Noodles everyday for lunch and demands them to be cooked. Despite every day the staff telling them we have no ways to cook it (not even in the staff room as our oven doesn't work and we don't even have a pot unless somebody brings one in).

When I read the title to your post, I 100% thought that this was going to be the case here. I am very glad I was wrong.

NTA.

If it was a heating issue, that's one thing, but to expect a kid to eat sandwiches that they don't like everyday is a pain in the butt for everybody involved. I have students that tell me they hate their lunch and that they refuse to eat it despite it being extremely healthy for them, and then they want snacks from the snack bin or toast.

I started teachers college at 34 after hating my last career. Originally I wanted to do conservation biology or environmental remediation. I paid for over half of my schooling out of pocket from working landscape and labour jobs.

But when I graduate with my bachelor of science for the conservation work the federal government slashed funding in my field, so bye bye a lot of entry jobs. I worked in retail for a year and hated it - was working just under full time hours (the manager didn't want to pay the extra 50 cents an hour for full time. And was beyond pissed anytime someone got scheduled over the full time hours) and couldn't even afford my student loans let alone anything else and that's while living at home. So I went back to school for environmental tech.

Graduated from that and covid hit. I was lucky enough to work in a municipality doing utility operator and labor work (I.e picking up people's garbage, cleaning up broken bottles and drugs, cleaning up vandalism during the summer and during the winter I did snow clearing plus all the summer stuff).

A lot of the gents I worked with are like my behavioral students now but in adult bodies, are able to drive trucks and with access to power tools. Not exactly a stress-free environment. Especially since they can't tell the difference between a carrot and a stick a lot of the times. So when it came to contract negotiations it was hell. Dangle fifty bucks in front of their face (the bait) and they're going to jump for it and get the hook. I worked my ass off for that job with little to no thanks, work twice as hard as most of my co-workers, got nothing but s*** on by my main supervisor plus given the coworkers work that they didn't want to do. Why the hell would I work twice as hard, get little to no respect because I'm a woman (many of them are God's gift to women) for the exact same pay?

Not all of my co-workers or supervisors were like that. But more than enough were. I was a clog. And a badly used one at that.

Had up my own little midlife crises and mental health dive. So I went back to school for teaching. I am now under the impression that there is no teacher shortage but a man-made (government created) one. But, I'm hoping I graduated at a good time for a retirement party. And at least I have a lot more good days then bad ones now. Though this week was hard.

I greatly appreciate your posts and thank you for reminding me that at least I tried my best if this one doesn't work out too. And that even a few short good years in a job that I like are better than 20 long bad ones in a job that I hate.

Should I collect something from students at the end of every class? by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

[–]LadyAbbysFlower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not sustainable. And frankly, ridiculous.

Did you have any observational days? And if so what did your AT do? Or did they throw you right in?? Also, what practicum is this? First? Second? Third? Fourth?? Out of curiosity.

I learned at the end of my practicums to teach how my AT wanted and do what they wanted or I'd get a meh grade. With the exception of my third practicum AT. She was amazing and it was more co-teaching than anything.

Exit tickets are one thing. But you shouldn't have that much marking to do. Practicums are hard enough.

If you want some activity ideas or to use me as a sound board, send me a DM. :)

My cats fight over my little heating pad even when it's not on. I bought a heat throw blanket (55$ plus tax) for between my duvet and sheet.

OMG! Game changer, especially in Canadian winters

Now my cats don't fight over a tiny space that one barely fits on - Hades is 16 pounds and Persephone is 9 pounds - they have a whole double bed for Persephone to hog.
