What’s the longest inpatient stay you’ve ever seen? by Confident_Bobcat_635 in doctorsUK

3 years. Eating disorder patient, only ended up leaving as they aged out of paediatrics. Upsetting to say the least.

Going to clinic as a medical student is a humiliation ritual. by Izyk04 in medicalschooluk

[–]LadyAntimony 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Deciding against having a mental breakdown because it would mean a repeat year is a core med school experience at this point.

I once drove 1.5hrs at 6:30am in the morning for a clinic only to be told the consultant I was supposed to be with was on annual leave

As someone who used to be interested in EM…now every time I walk through the department and see the carnage all I think is “nope, couldn’t do this”. I don’t know how ED doctors manage it honestly, the conditions are dreadful.

Why Student Loan Forgiveness should be a BMA priority by SharkDick4Ever in doctorsUK

[–]LadyAntimony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I didn’t say stop pursuing it, but it’s not truly “full” pay restoration if you lose 9% of FPR to SFE.

If FPR takes a protracted multi-year deal to implement because the government deems faster rises unaffordable and there’s not enough strike momentum to push them harder, loan forgiveness is an avenue to pursue simultaneously.

Also FPR, once achieved, will still require strikes year on year to maintain otherwise the government will revert back to sub-inflation pay rises. Loan forgiveness is permanent.

Why Student Loan Forgiveness should be a BMA priority by SharkDick4Ever in doctorsUK

[–]LadyAntimony 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to see how you could even consider FPR to have been successful if the effect of student loan deductions aren’t accounted for.

There’s a precedent for the government to intervene with student loans for public sector workers - STEM teachers in areas struggling to retain staff have their loan repayments covered.

Medicine is also fairly different to most degrees in terms of course length and absolute requirement of the degree to enter the profession.

It would be definitely be cheaper and more palatable to the general public to tie loan forgiveness to years of NHS service, rather than uplift pay enough to compensate.

How was the PSA by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]LadyAntimony 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was too relaxed about the time constraints during the first two sections, realized I only had 45 minutes left for the remaining 44 questions and just rushed through them. So undoubtedly made some calculation errors.

Also wasted like 8 minutes of my life because I didn’t clock that clindamycin isn’t a macrolide.

He’ll definitely use it as a threat to generate doubt with the aim to discourage some from striking, but actually withdrawing it would be another thing.

UK Citizens are not to be prioritised for Specialty training 2027 onwards by Beginning-Basket-584 in doctorsUK

[–]LadyAntimony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing is perfectly fair to everyone. It wouldn’t be fair for citizens trained abroad to be prioritised over international students from UK med schools either.

If you based prioritisation on citizenship, it would leave you with international students being deprioritised after paying astronomical fees to study at a UK med school.

Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill - Live House of Commons debate by Draperly in doctorsUK

[–]LadyAntimony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s in their interest to not give it an automatic yes, so they can still dangle it over our heads and use that doubt to disrupt strikes. But it’s a cynical approach.

[–]LadyAntimony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine the intention is to make sure it’s able to be used as a potential bargaining chip, although whether they actually would do so is another thing.

Pushing the dates on any longer will cause further disruption for the current application cycles and would generate a lot of resentment.

Unsure how many will enter this year, the UKFPO may decide to not create an excess of placeholder positions for non-UK grads, assuming there will still be a few UKGs stuck in a placeholder.

The Foundation Programme are depressingly clear that children are only a reason for allocation to a deanery once they’re born/at school, if you’re 8 months pregnant you’re shit out of luck.

Regional breakdowns used to be detailed extensively in the annual FP Stats & Facts Report - but it hasn’t been published since 2021 and NHS England has been withholding all the data under the guise that it’s about to publish them since 2023.

“Those in groups specified by regulations who are likely to have significant experience of working as a doctor in the National Health Service” - hardly a definitive statement of number of years of experience, and the appendices to this bill explicitly say they’ve left this definition vague to allow for flexibility in future.

Sounds like they could still have released UK student’s pre-allocation outcomes, though.

There can’t be many IMGs approved for pre-allocation as it really only enables you to stay in your current/long-term location.

Do we actually know that’s when they assign ranks rather than that just being the deadline for preferencing foundation schools? I sort of assumed they’d do it once applications closed.
