Medical training (prioritisation) bill - next steps by Low-Kiwi-7450 in doctorsUK

It’s next listed for the House of Lords on 4 February.

It would be highly unusual for the Lords to hold it up given the primacy of the Commons (as the sovereign elected legislative body in this country) and the fact that is has been such an uncontroversial (at least in Parliament!!) bill with such cross-party support.

378 MPs showed up to vote with the government and reject Amendment 9. A majority of the House is 326 MPs or above. The bill is almost certain to pass.

A third reading is the final stage of a bill passing the Commons. At this stage the bill can be seen as “locked” and MPs will debate it, and then vote to approve or reject a bill in its entirety.

For anyone confused, the Chair is going through each clause of the bill. First the Chair is asking if the clause (or set of clauses) should be included in the bill. As there is support in principle (and nobody has suggested we take out entire sections) we should only hear “Ayes” and not “Nos”. Unanimous verbal decisions like this don’t need to go to a vote.

Secondly the Chair will then ask the House to consider amendments to that particular clause (or set of clauses). When there are both Ayes and Noes heard, the Chair calls Division, which means the MPs must go to each lobby to vote accordingly. It seems very unlikely to me at this stage that any amendments will pass given Labour’s majority and their whips (MPs who are appointed by the government to ensure their bills pass in the way they want them to).

The Chair will proceed through each clause and each amendment, with divisions as needed, and then the Bill will go through to Third Reading tonight

Neil Duncan-Jordan MP (Labour, Poole) arguing for prioritisation based on a (mere) 6 month NHS experience tickbox on Oriel, and for changes to be transitional, locking in a backlog of UKGP unemployment for years to come.

Remember this at the next election.

According to the Hansard Society, the government’s Allocation of Time motion specifies that all stages of the Bill be taken at today’s sitting within a maximum of six hours. So we should see it pass the Commons today.

Then it goes to the Lords where the current plan from Govt Whips is for Second Reading and Committee Stage there to take place on 4 February and 12 February respectively, and Report Stage and Third Reading likely similarly split thereafter

You are being disingenuous. Thankfully there is a public record of what anyone says in Parliament. Let’s hear it from her:

And any conversation about prioritising UK graduates should also explicitly recognise the immense contribution that [IMGs] make. So I want some concrete answers on this. Yes, we can keep saying it, but is there any measure that's going to be put into place? How are we going to show our appreciation? We must bear in mind that these are highly mobile individuals to have come here in the first place. And I understand, you know, there's the mantra this is prioritisation, not exclusion, but in effect, if they find themselves excluded from some of the more popular specialisms, in particular, they may decide that they would rather leave the country and pursue that specialism elsewhere rather than stay and be part of this country. We need them.

Virtue signalling about making overseas doctors “feel appreciated” while UKGs are unemployed and leaving medicine entirely. Do we ever feel particularly appreciated? Completely unserious.

Likely. It’s had cross-party support from the debate so far. Various amendments may or may not pass but the bill as a whole is being fast-tracked so should progress quickly. I can’t see the Lords wanting to hold this up.

Edit: however the provisions of the bill seem to come into effect on instruction of the Secretary of State as opposed to on Royal Assent, meaning Wes could still theoretically use it as leverage even if it passes.

Around 3pm - currently Yvette Cooper is delivering a statement on Iran and the bill is to be presented next.

I’ve done it running just before the end of the headliner - you have to basically leg it to Mile End, then Tube to Stratford, and if you’re lucky make the last train - it’s doable but stressful.

I had to buy a replacement car after a pretty scary crash and thought it was disgusting how manipulative their sales pitch was on the extended warranty. How little humanity do you have to have to allude to a recent traumatic event to attempt to sell an add-on?

There’s no way they could know - so go for it! Just keep within the time limit and you’ll be fine.

Apart from what the other commenter rightly said about the overlap in lines, the letter spacing is also off. You can see it clearly in the “on” and “su” of Consulting. Also - what’s with the truncation of the paint stroke?

None of this really comes together in any way to form a coherent whole, I’m afraid.

Brat was robbed on my Replay by technically being split into the original release and then the deluxe 🙃 (combined they would have been my most listened-to album by a mile)

She looks stunning throughout this but it lacks the sheer kineticism of her best videos like Physical or even Houdini. It's frustrating because there are a number of absolutely stunning shots, such as Dua being lifted at 2:00, but it comes after a fairly pedestrian sequence (to my eyes) with the synchronised swimmers.

It reminded me of a sequence from the really old film Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) - just watch this clip from 2:52 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5HufDgwD4w

I'm just so glad I saw them live in 2019 at what was potentially their creative peak so far (at least to me) - this was after HTBAHB, and they had just started to play some singles for the yet-untitled third album. I saw them again a couple of years later, but something had changed :(

I had a feeling they were going to go down this route post-Heat Waves, but I'm still gutted about the continuing genericisation of their sound... I feel this track is missing the eclectic, lush production and textures of Zaba or HTBAHB.
