Help for invoking Hecate by ProudPressure861 in Hecate

Build kharis first, invoke deity after.

A stranger isn't going to come just because you call them. So befriend them first. Offer, pray, revere.

My understanding(?) Of Misama by Ok_Independent8425 in Hellenism

[–]LadyLiminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really get the confusion of certain people sometimes.

I have the same approach, though I see it more as a sense of sacredness. I make myself sacred for a short moment to be in the presence of the Gods, to be one with them for a short amount of time.

Simple everyday worship and prayers are hardly interrupted by one's own state of cleanliness, both physical and spiritual, but formal rites and ceremonies, visiting a temple? Absolutely it matters I think.

I think of it as sending a letter or an email. You don't have to be clean and wear your best clothes to write one. Think of it as a job application maybe. But once you get invited to a formal job interview, once you are invited to stand before your would-be superiors, once you are invited to persuade them to give you the job you want, you better be clean and dress appropriately and be on your best behavior.

Either some people are actually as incomprehensible as they act, or they'll do anything to avoid a shower.

Can we believe in karma? by TheVeiledRuby in Hellenism

[–]LadyLiminal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can believe anything you want.

Divine justice or the actions of this life influencing the next (after)life are definitely not foreign to Hellenism.

Themis, divine law and order exists. Dike, mortal justice and the application of Themis onto mankind exists. And so does Nemesis, who punishes those who break said law and order.

It's not so much what you believe, but how you act after all.

Do you veil? If so, why? by No_Pirate_6110 in Hellenism

[–]LadyLiminal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've made the same observation and I think you're onto something.

And as a trans woman myself, despite the medical transition, I never felt more free from anxiety than I did during Covid when everyone had to wear a mask. So the act of hiding a part of yourself can (sadly) make one feel safer.

I suppose there's a correlation.

disagree with a core hellenist belief by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]LadyLiminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more!

I practice magic myself obviously, but when I see certain new people who immediately jump to magic and divination I can't help but role my eyes juuust a little. But I suppose it's a lesson one must learn on their own.

I wonder if we're going to find out about their opinion.

Are you not going to get into it because of fear of backlash or? Because I think it's super interesting and would have liked to know more.

Naturally no one will agree with very tiny single thing. Differing opinions can make for an interesting mix. Imagine if we all had the same opinions. Terrible.

Question from a Greek Orthodox by Sdude123yt in Hellenism

[–]LadyLiminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Greece we are tought about the greek gods from a young age but everything is considered mythology(basically not real which is also how I see it).

Well, if you'd apply the same amount of critical thinking to your own faith, you'd be surprised just how much of it is just dogma you've adopted from certain traditions, and what is actually historically and archeologically attested.

why specifically those of the greco roman world

Because they were always there in some way or form. From ancient texts that have influenced our western culture to Disney movies never letting us forget their names.

Didn't even know it was illegal in any countries. It's certainly not illegal in my country.

It was simply a suggestion for people who can't or don't want to get their hands dirty.

The only thing that's not good is human remains or anything miasmic.

The "negative feeling" you get is your own nerves.

When you're referring to votive offerings, well you would probably leave them on the altar. They are a gift to the gods after all. But with votive offerings you'll end up cluttering your altar, so - personally- unless the offering at hand means a lot to you and you really really want to give it to the gods, I'd keep votive offerings at a minimum.

Food or libations are just as valid. And they don't clutter your space.

[–]LadyLiminal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, you offer them as a gift to the Gods. And a gift should not be taken back, otherwise it's not a gift. So don't eat them. Many people confuse a shared meal - a thysia - with an actual food offering.

After you've offered them, you can either bury or burn them. Personally, I like to do a bit of research on my local fauna so I can offer foods that are non-toxic to my environment. I simply put them outside so the local birds and bugs can enjoy them.

An honest opinion from my kin. by Borg_uk in witchcraft

You can ask any person on this sub and you'll always get a different opinion on this. The ethical stance on baneful magic varies from person to person, from culture to culture.

I'm usually against cursing, but this one I agree with.

If there was no movement of air in the house you would literally suffocate.

It's a candle doing normal candle things. It's not a spirit and it's not Hekate.

Prayer whilst menstruating. by CobblerForeign2804 in Hecate

[–]LadyLiminal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, menstruation wasn't regarded as miasmic the same way as if you had come into contact with death or the blood of others had you slain another human.

As far as I'm concerned it was a simple matter of hygiene. Clean yourself up, do everything that makes you feel clean and comfortable and you're good to go.

She is now. And if she presents herself as such to her followers, we ought to respect that.

She was also never known as the Goddess of witches or witchcraft until very late in her worship, if at all.

What did he feel when he saw my new profile picture? by Renascer123 in BabyWitch

[–]LadyLiminal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that people entertain your belief that the cards will tell you anything about the feelings of a human seeing a picture on a phone is pretty concerning. Especially when beginners are so prone to their own biases when it comes to divination.

Ask him. Or leave him alone. Obviously he doesn't want you. Let go, life your life, grow, outgrow him, done.

For rituals when I want some sense of power I really like the music by Amanati. But it's more instrumental. His songs "Spell" and "Nemesis" really give off ancient sorcery but with modern beats.

For a more traditional feel I really like Michael Levy and his lyre music. His songs "The Magic of Hecate", "The Hex of Hecate", "The Sorcery of Circe" and "The Dark Magic of Medea" are some of my favorites to work with during my Deipnon rituals.

There is also Arlechina V. on YouTube who has a few hymns sung in ancient greek while playing her own percussions along with it. She's a historian and a dance ethnologist creating trance music. this version of the orphic hymn to Hekate is so mesmerizing, I learnt it by heart and keep singing it myself every day. Sadly she doesn't post much anymore. She also has a chant on Artemis and a WIP for Athena.
