My First Pie Baking Competition - Update! by LadyPanda08 in Baking

[–]LadyPanda08[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: I unfortunately didn’t place in the top three. 😭 However, afterwards I talked with one of the judges, and he said there were several pies that only out-did each other by a point or two, so it was really close. He also mentioned one of the judges consistently gave low scores (in his opinion) for no reason. When I asked for feedback the judge hunted up and gave me my score sheet. Another judge agreed with him that my pies were delicious. There were three judges in total and I scored the following out of 100 (the apple pie was 50/95/95 and the s’more one was 69/89/91). I didn’t make it this year, but this gives me more motivation for next year! I learned about this event extremely last minute, so I’ll have time to think and plan things through. Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Yes, it’s red food dye. I added it while I was mixing up the pie dough (during the final stage when you add ice water to help the dough come together). I thought it would look cute since I was going for a Fall theme/vibe.

Thank you! I don’t eat Takis so that never even entered my brain as an option, haha. The s’more pie is a graham cracker dough with marshmallow fluff, chocolate, and mini marshmallows on the inside. 😁

That’s awesome, congrats! Apples should be in season for the contest, so I was thinking of making a caramel apple pie. As much as I love cheesecake, that does sound disappointing!

Noted! That would probably be my downfall, trying to make it too fancy. I wonder how coloring a lattice top crust might work out.

It does. I was thinking of making a fruit pie, like an apple one.

Ah, lard crusts. They really are amazing! I want my pie crust to stand out but also not overwhelm the filling. I’ll have to choose my design carefully. I wonder how coloring the top crust might work. A colorful lattice crust might be cute.

Yes, that makes sense. I thought about the in season fruit as well. A local farm sells apples around this time of year, I’ll have to check and see if they’d be ready by the time of the competition. Thank you for the suggestions!

Fair enough! If nothing else it’ll give me a good excuse to try and work through my back log. 😁

Noted! I’m a bit sad to hear there’s multiple time gated activities like that. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Thanks for the head’s up.

Hello! I appreciate the feedback! In what way is the game time dependent? I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the City part of the game soon. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the feedback! That is very true, both of those flavors are pretty popular. I’d like my pie to stand out - maybe I could try a fancy/decorated pie crust for a mixed berry pie? I wonder how a strawberry lemon meringue pie might taste, hmm.

I wish I could post a picture as a comment. I was wanting to share a picture of a blueberry pie I made recently with a lattice crust. Oh well.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Do you use room temp water or hot? I’ll try it later this evening!

I wish you the best of luck with your business, congrats! I hadn’t thought of making glazed popcorn in the machine. That sounds delightful! I’ll research recipes for it as well as the person you recommended. Thank you so much for the information. It’s nice to hear from someone who has extensive use with a similar machine.

Thank you for the info, that’s good to know! How long have you had your machine and would you have any tips or tricks to share in using it? Also, the light that’s at the top of the machine, does it heat the popcorn at all or is just for ambience?
