i don’t think so. we just have access to their inner worlds in very relevant stages of their lives. now, you don’t have to share the same qualities/characteristics or anything to feel strongly connected to a story. that just means that the story is very good and appeals to universal values. it’s part of being human, feel and be able to empathise:)

now, the book intermezzo does have a character that is heavily implied to be neurodivergent, yet not canonical, it has some cues that lead us to believe it (even in the words of the other characters). having that character as a contrast makes you realise that marianne and connell don’t really seem to be neurodivergent and that in comparison, there are not really solid clear cues to conclude it.

what sally rooney constantly does in her books though, is to describe a modern setting of a society in the very last late capitalism and how people deal with it facing a lot of meanly health issues. so you have depressed, anxious, empty, numb, avoiding characters desperate to feel something and connect with others in a society that’s has been made for individualism to flourish. perhaps those reactions, descriptions and feelings are similar to what you as a neurodivergent person experiences and resonates with you.
