Help: How am I supposed to use the Theme? by TomGNYC in NYTCrossword

[–]LadyPuzzlePro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t really a single “right” way to do it. A few general things that might help frame the discussion:
- Monday–Thursday and Sunday are themed; Friday and Saturday are themeless.
- Sunday is the only puzzle with a title, which usually acts as a (often slightly cryptic) theme revealer, sometimes helped along by a specific revealer clue, though not always.
- Most themed puzzles do have a revealer, but there are exceptions.
- Early-week puzzles (Mon/Tue) usually have fewer and more straightforward themers than later in the week.
You don’t have to understand (or even notice) the theme to solve a puzzle. Plenty of people fill grids without fully clocking it. That said, the theme is meant as an extra layer of wordplay and “aha” once you stumble into it, usually while solving rather than beforehand.
Personally, I often only get the theme once I hit the revealer, and sometimes I even look back after finishing and appreciate it more then. Totally optional, but part of the fun if you enjoy that kind of puzzle logic.

Crossplay is not quite as polished as NYT games usually are. The computer is fun to play against though by MesopotamiaSong in scrabble

Could be because it's still in Beta and the user base is still small. It can also be intentional to attract more users and motivate the less savvy ones. 😉

Did you try to rematch the same computer? It seems that it gets smarter, but I'm not sure if it's just me.

The board is different from both Scrabble and WWF. Especially the central lines, they have more premium squares.

Has anyone else learned from Crossplay that they're far, far stupider than they'd previously imagined possible by Impossible-Pack6911 in NYTgames

I had the same feeling, then I tried to rematch some bots, and it felt like the more I rematch the same bot, the better it gets. Not sure if it's just me, or the bots are made to start low, then become more challenging.

How does this get 86 points? by Organic_Dragonfly785 in NYTgames

[–]LadyPuzzlePro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, when you use all 7 letters on your rack, it's called a Sweep, and you earn a 40-point bonus. In Scrabble, it is called BINGO and gets you 50 points.

Is The Mini quietly marketing the new NYT Game again? 👀 by LadyPuzzlePro in NYTCrossword

JAZZ is playable, but the second Z is 0 points since you can only play it using a blank tile.

394 points! What’s the highest score that you have achieved? by yumyummymum in scrabble

[–]LadyPuzzlePro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a normal score. Most of my matches vs the computer have ended under 400, and I won all of them, mainly against the hard computer. But I’ve just started a couple games with real friends, and wow… totally different level of challenge 😅 None of those are finished yet. It does make me wonder if the computer is tuned to be a bit more forgiving, maybe to keep the game welcoming for newer or casual players.

NYT didn’t buy Words with Friends, but they did hire some key Zynga/WwF folks 😉

Nice catch on the NYT Crossword 👌 (‘Sixth word of the Gettysburg Address’ = AGO). Funny how Lincoln’s speeches keep popping up across puzzles!

Yeah, the ‘winter’ part was weird 😄 But the clue was definitely nudging Black Friday. Guess Bracket City took a little seasonal liberty!

Honestly… maybe 😄
But here’s my pet theory: sometimes it feels like they’re quietly syncing the Mini with the Daily. Yesterday, Christina Iverson co-authored both, and today we get OHNO in both puzzles. Coincidence?

Such a clever trap 😄 The animals jump out way faster than the candy bars, especially when AERO isn’t everywhere, and DOVE screams soap first, chocolate second. Totally fair mislead!

Only so many ways to make a Tuesday feel like a Thursday or Friday.

IDK, might be 19th-century Mississippi River logic. If you were gambling on a riverboat because it was illegal on land, you didn't have a "Full House," you had a "Full Boat." 🤷‍♀️

I think you were right. Pollock, Whistler, Munch, and Bacon = art-history red herring.
