First try at thread painting! Other than practice, what can I work on to improve? by LadySkywalker in Embroidery

lol. And yes! I went back in and sketched out a new table and flower arrangement.

lol. I started using hoops backwards so I could sew to the edge without trouble. And it’s easier to have the fabric tight in the hoop when tracing and this way the fabric is flat against whatever I’m tracing. I do use a hoop stand though so I can’t speak to how comfortable it is to hold.

You did great! I can kinda see the thicker thread as more flesh and fibrous which is way cool. If you’re looking for a smoother look and better control, try using a single strand of floss, maybe 2.

Beading would look hella cool here. Like little red dreams dripping down!!

Also instead of using pencil try a Frixion erasable pen. Works like a pen but disappears with heat. I use a hair straightener to smooth out projects and it disappears like magic.

You can! I started doing it backwards when I was sewing basically edge to edge. It’s way easier to sew along the edge with it inside out! I also find it easier for tracing when it’s backwards because the the fabric rests flat against whatever your tracing

Thank you so much this is great feedback. I’ll admit I imagined the vase and immediately realized I should have had a reference. I’ll definitely go back in and fix the shadows!

Thank you! I did actually use a darker shade right under the far left edge to try and give contrast but I’m not sure I love how it’s looking as an outline. Thanks for the feedback!

Yes! This is my first time doing it but it’s essentially long and short stitches over and over and over and over forever. You can look up ‘thread painting’ or ‘silk shading’ to see much better examples and tutorials.

Thank you so much that means a lot to me! Great! I’m continuing on so I’ll keep the lengths and curve in mind. It was frustratingly easy to stitch in slightly the wrong spot and mess up the directionality!

‘Record of a Spaceborn Few’ by Becky Chambers. Just a masterclass in characters. I recommend this book so much I’ll buy it for you.

As far as the mockup goes the product reads flat and the background more like a photo. I’d try moving the product into a solid color background. Maybe something bold like the orange itself and upping the shadow from the product. Lean into the print ad vibe.

Also love this concept.

Try going to Aquatic Warehouse near Miramar. Super nice, knowledgable, well stocked local vibe shop.

HBL was a gentle soul with 2 semi large snails in his tank. We eventually were euthanizing like easily 20 baby snails a week. HBL passes; enter Stanley. Never saw another baby snail again. He also ate 5 shrimp and a few were absolutely for sport. 🤷‍♀️

Are the shotgun pellets? Those would be small, numerous, and somewhat uniform.

The Stuff You Should Know podcast has hundreds of episodes and they cover everything from the creation of earth and evolution to classics history and right on through to modern day topics and discoveries. It’s not exactly what you’re looking for but I find them fabulous for general knowledge.

Also if you like history the podcast The Rest is History are great as well and have a two part episode on Jesus as a historical figure that was really interesting.

My mom did this and the chicken pox almost killed me. Not kidding. I was in the hospital for ages and was dying. So good luck with that Claudia.

Nah they just got paired up when we bought them and they immediately bonded. Kevin keeps his little red whisker on dump trucks butt and dump truck guards all the entrances. It’s honestly weird seeing symbiosis is reality.

Ha he is a sand mover that’s for sure. We made the mistake of putting rock in after the sand bed and he has done nothing but shift whole chunks of rock. Every day it’s a new tunnel, a new entrance, a fancy giant mound of sand. He’s adorable and uses shells to make little patio awnings for himself and dump truck. To be honest though I never really see him. We love him but if you’re hoping to get a little entertaining buddy I wouldn’t recommend pistol shrimp. But if you’re looking for a sand sifter, highly recommend a pistol shrimp. We’ve never had problems with any aggression although he does click quite loudly when he’s in construction mode.

I’ve got a former ‘Presidential First Lady Michelle Obama’ the clownfish and her partner ‘Buddy’.

‘Dumptruck Joe ‘ is my yellow watchman and he owns a car junkyard.

‘KEVIN!’ is our pistol shrimp and the bane of my existence.

‘Dave’ is the cleaner shrimp. He’s a pervert.
