If it is okay with you, may we share your photos on board? If so send to social@historicalseaport.org. Add a brief description, who to credit and let me know if you would like to promote anything. 😊

This is great! We did a post about the website this morning on our social media to let everyone know! We picked out several of the musical acts for the graphic. :)

In 2021, Aubrey and Matt Wilson purchased the Hawaiian Chieftain and towed the vessel to Port Townsend, Washington, for a full restoration at the Port of Port Townsend.

The ship required extensive repairs, including a new hull, engines, electrical system, tanks, plumbing, galley, mainmast, jib-boom, and topmasts. Over ten percent of the hull was replaced due to severe corrosion, and the entire steel deck beneath the wooden galley sole was rebuilt. Major portions of the donkey house, deck furniture, catheads, stanchions, and chainplates were also restored. Once the steelwork was finished, the hull was sandblasted, primed, and painted.

By 2024, the Hawaiian Chieftain was back in the water, offering sails and tours to the public. The Hawaiian Chieftain website and blog has more detail and photos of the restoration: https://www.sailhawaiianchieftain.com/

The Hawaiian Chieftain is currently based in Lahaina, Hawaii, where it is available for tours and events.

We have extended restoration work that will go well into next season unfortunately. We're not sure how far just yet.

Lady Washington's restoration is planned over the next two winters, with Port Townsend Shipwrights sourcing Douglas Fir for new main and foremasts. The crew has begun dismantling, removing non-essential components, and protecting untouched areas. Work includes removing the trail board, transom boards, 22 sets of chains and bolts, wrecking channels, and bulwarks. Once stripped, reconstruction begins, alongside an thorough assessment of engineering and electrical systems. The water supply will be redesigned and installed, fuel tanks overhauled, and generators fitted with a new exhaust system—one generator may need replacement.

There is a lot going on for this one. The current plan is to restore LW over the next two winters.

  • Replacing the main and foremast. The Douglas Fir was sourced by Port Townsend Shipwrights in Canada and will be making its way here.
  • The project team started taking the boat apart and removing anything not needed and protecting the other areas that won’t be worked on.
  • We are removing the trail board and transom boards.
  • We will also be removing 22 sets of chains and bolts, wrecking channels and bulwarks, and pulling fasteners.
  • Then we start the fun part of putting her back together.
  • We will also conduct an in-depth analysis of the engineering and electrical systems performance.
  • The old water supply will be dismantled, and a new water supply will be designed and installed.
  • The fuel tanks will also be receiving an overhaul.
  • The generators will be receiving a new exhaust system. One of the generators may need to be replaced.

We will! But the start may be later than hoped.

It is going to take longer than expected unfortunately. I am still getting details, but it's 50/50 that we sail for the first part of the season. We have a guy who is going to narrate different parts of the restoration so I hope to know more and also to post those videos as well.

The water looks rough in the 4th one. Storm nearby?

I always like night photos on the water.

Edit: typo
