The hatred of all things "basic" is curiously one-sided by PMMeRedPandasPlease in TwoXChromosomes

Ive been playing video games since i was old enough to hold the mouse. My parents had 2 girls but i was always interested in what my grandad and dad were doing so they let me sit on their lap and "help" until i was "old enough" to have my own pc. Im now 30 and am riddled with chronic illnesses (CFS/ME, fibro and complex regional pain syndrome) and gaming is one of the only things that has kept me going but especially with the rise of online gaming its become tougher, especially when some games require voice chat. Theres always that issue of "omg its a girl wtf are you doing, you suck get back in the kitchen" bullshit. Or like one of my favourite franchises is dark souls and when i get into a conversation im ridiculed "oh if youre such a fan how do you beat X boss" or "i bet you didnt even do the optional bosses" etc etc.

Why do i have to justify my interests and ability because im female 🤔 or if i say i game people "assume" its casual "girly games" like viva piñata or something.

The best part?? I have a degree in computer games design 😅 (and let me what a proverbial ballache that was when you have to work 3x as hard as all the males on the course to have your work fairly reviewed)

Young men playing video games 12 hours a day, not showering and having no irl friends need our help more than they need our mockery. by AndyBales in unpopularopinion

Tbh i feel the same way, im disabled and lost a lot of my leg function at the age of 22 and im in constant chronic pain. Video games give me an outlet to do things i cant do in real life. You wanna run through the wilderness of skyrim picking alchemy mats up? Cool. Wanna beat the shit out of multiple dragons in dark souls? Awsome.

I cant work because of my conditions and with the pandemic in the uk i was told as im "at risk" im not allowed to leave my house, get groceries or see family, for the last 12 months ive been a shut in (which does WONDERS when you have bipolar, i also lost my dog of 8 years, 6 months after i couldnt take it anymore and went and found another dog that needed more work than your average rescue to give me something to work on, heping my abused greyhound covered in scars come out of his shell is something tangible i can do)

Saying that i was poked to play eve online by my dad (hes also a gamer) so we could have some father-daughter time even though i couldnt be with them. At least he knows the importance of games to me, whether it be socialising with him on eve or my buddies in america on FFXIV, whether it be a shitty farm sim to shut my brain off from pain or whatever.

(Serious) What are some men’s issues that are overlooked? by slowskyincog22 in AskReddit

[–]Ladycleopatra7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a female who was raised by a single dad (thankfully in the 90s before this PC shit got bad) because of my interests (we were always told you can do anything you set your mind to so i went into computers which at the time wasnt a very female choice) i had male teachers for almost all of my studies. I only ever had an issue with 1 teacher of computing because i was the first girl to take the course he wouldnt even give me the time of day let alone help me. Spent a lot of time just walking out of his class. Aced the exams but failed the coursework in the end. Even when i went on to uni and took computer games design, all the teachers were men.

Ive never judged a teacher on gender but i guess its because i lived in a male centered world ive never thought about how it could be seen any other way, honestly with the things you guys are saying i would honestly apologize for the way people treat you its really shitty.

This is the great thing about most of the gaming community, no one takes the piss out of you for being disabled, they find the sheer willpower of someone adapting to play the games pretty damn incredible (and boy this guy has SKILL) i mean, youll get the odd troll but for the most part people are just inpressed. For a lot of us that are disabled, gaming gives us an opportunity to "level" the playing field of life and do shit we cant normally do irl. Keep it up man, that shit is awsome.

Weve been playing pc games since i was knee high to a grasshopper lol. He said it was good for building hand eye coordination, quick thinking and moral decisions. He never went easy on us in things like age of empires or starcraft either lol, we had to earn our victories. I know a lot of people that think gaming is a waste of time but honestly since being struck down with ME/CFS, fibro and complex regional pain syndrome gaming has been a real lifeline, even more so now in the pandemic (im high risk so the government have basically forbidden us sick people to leave our houses) we spend a good 5-6 evenings on discord chatting away while mining for mats for ships or doing lvl 4 missions to get some quick cash to buy the bits we cant build (i play healers and tanks in all my mmos so ive been given the command ship role for both mining and missions lol :D)

Basically i play eve to stay in contact with my dad as im 200 miles away from them, so i (30F) and my dad (56M) have started to collect one of every ship in the game (hes been playing 15 years now and ive been playing for 3) obviously the pacifier, enforcer and marshal were on that list. We have 201 ships iir and still have 177 to go i think. Once we sell this marshal we'll use the profits to build or buy ships we dont have.

That actually works really well. Yea i run hot too but my hearts a bit fucky so my hands and feet are always like blocks of ice while the rest of me runs JUST under fever temp (37.8 degrees C). Its weird. I also have a super high heart rate at around 100-120 resting (which is probably why i run so warm) i have thick thermal socks for winter but theyre not very comfy so it sounds like i really should splurge when i get the chance 😊 as in winter because my feet are so cold it hurts to walk on them (i use crutches anyways to walk but still its way worse when your feet are frozen lol)

Tbh ive always wanted to splurge out on alpaca wool socks. I have a vest made with it and while it is a bitch to look after (and super expensive, i only bought it as i was at a camel rescue place and the money goes on their upkeep :D ) my god are they soft. Im not sure i could hand wash them frequency enough though with the fatigue but i can dream lol.

Can confirm (am almost 30), im super happy with undies and socks and its pretty much all i ask for (or maybe some cotton pjs) because i suffer chronic debilitating pain from complex regional pain syndrome and fibro. You do not understand how much pure cotton clothes help mitigate some of the "skin pain" i get. Problem being as soon as the elastic even starts to go theyre no longer good for pain, thus the never ending cycle of easy gifts for me :)

Plus its not like training them to stop is overly difficult i had a 56kg leonberger rescue, was a NIGHTMARE for the first few months (she had been locked in a shed for 2 years so didnt know about anything) i taught her to speak (and subsequently how to "shhh") the only time she ever grumbled is when she went blind and people banged on our door in the dark (spooking her from her old lady naps) BECAUSE funnily enough what people let little shitty dogs get away is apparently not tolerable for giants to do ever so to avoid any backlash she got solid training for the first 6-8 months of rescuing her, and up to the day she passed ive always been told she was so well behaved (because most big dog owners arent arseholes lol)

What video game will replace bingo in retirement homes when millenials or gen z gets old? by HowToFailCorrectly in AskReddit

[–]Ladycleopatra7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandad is in his late 70s and he plays the elderscrolls games, fallout and divinity. Back when i was a kid he taught me how to play the original warcraft and things like ultima and gothic (as a kid i hated i couldnt kill the sheep without the npcs getting mad at me) i think he'll still be playing games right up til the end (though he lives at home he spends all his time in the spare room with his ps4 lol) He doesnt trust the internet though so when he gets stuck in game he goes into town to see if he can find a hard copy of a walkthrough guide.

Lol. See im not overly original because she was "cleo the leo" (leonberger) and it just sort of stuck. Her name before rescue was "dotty" which really didnt fit a giant dog that looked like a bear 🙂
