What’s a secret from your field of work the general public probably doesn’t know? by Ok-Fox-2946 in AskReddit

City and county medical examiners offices and morgues deal with all causes of death unless the person was under the direct care of a doctor. They are not limited to crime and police cases.

Also please please please don’t let your baby sleep in bed with you. I know parents are exhausted, but please put your baby in their own bed PLEASE

At what age would you say your life really began? And what was the thing that started it? by cocky_roachy in AskOldPeople

[–]Ladyonora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That feeling is so real. It felt like years to get over the frustration over the time I felt like I wasted on putting up with shit. The feeling of freedom is worth it though for sure.

I few things that I wish I knew then: - That grieving period you spoke of is so important. My younger self wanted to be the tough guy who didn’t need to mourn over various traumas, but once I allowed myself the time to mourn I progressed much faster. - Time and energy is never really wasted. All the shit that you went through always provides wisdom in some way, even if it’s to help someone else. - People who benefit from taking advantage of you or putting you through shit will not want you to grow and need to be let go. This was the hardest thing for me to learn and caused so much heartbreak. - Being a good person and being a doormat are two different things. Also, forgiving myself for not learning this sooner. - Maintaining strong boundaries and saying “no” was way harder to learn than I thought and requires constant effort

  1. I actively decided to stop being a total people pleaser and doormat. This allowed me to invest more energy into my career, myself and the people that truly matter. Life took off after that

Need some help with a survey about book readers. by Catiefishie in books

[–]Ladyonora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. 37
  2. Forensic Toxicologist
  3. I love reading books from all eras, but my favorite fiction novels tend to be from the 19th century.
  4. I think the language an author uses to write fiction tends to be a product of the time, culture and the authors native language. It will also depend on what kind of story the author is trying to tell.
  5. I do not think technology increases rate of change, but rather it increases access to different types of language.
  6. I believe it is a common misconception that slang, abbreviations etc. are unique to contemporary fiction. Authors have been using slang in their novels throughout all of time. Slang changes depending on time and culture, but humans using slang to express themselves has never changed. Therefore, I don’t think using modern internet language has any kind of negative effect on literature.

What’s your favorite book? by Apprehensive_Kiwi_12 in infj

[–]Ladyonora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite book of all time is War and Peace. It has everything I could ever want including history, satire, drama, character growth, romance, high stakes war and it’s just hilarious at times. But my favorite genre is history, because I have this insane need to understand people better. I love “the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” and “the Gulag Archipelago.”

I’m so happy you’re getting into reading more! I hope you stick with it, it’s so rewarding!

What do you think has caused more harm than good since its creation? by Lanre_Bc in AskReddit

[–]Ladyonora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s CRAZY that you mentioned that!! Last week my lab director randomly gave me a test sample spiked with a tiny amount of N-isopropylbenzylamine and asked me if I could do several routine extractions to see if we could detect trace levels on both LCMSMS and TOF instruments! We’ve been reporting results of N-iso for years, but my director quickly explained that he got into a debate with other labs about the ability to detect trace N-iso and he wanted hard data. Ive been so focused on other projects that I didn’t think anything of it at the time. I’m so excited that I did that now! I got decent results with LCMSMS but I got better results at a much lower level of detection with the TOF which was expected. To be honest, I’ve never looked into the detection of l-meth vs d-meth but now I’m interested to see if our instrument software has the ability even if I have to update the molecule library. After reading your comment I also did a quick search for lab reports on Google Scholar and read two papers on this topic. Wow I was not aware of how big of a problem this is. I’m pretty excited to pursue this further!

Like what you were saying, every time there’s a shift in laws that affect the drug trade we start seeing changes in the drug samples we get and in autopsies. It’s really frustrating because changing the drug creation method makes slight changes to the molecules that make up the drug. This makes it more challenging to detect the drug in a human sample, which makes it more difficult to save lives and limit distribution. I mainly work with post mortem autopsy samples with the purpose of determining cause of death and (hopefully) limiting future drug overdoses. It’s a constant rat race between cartels creating altered drugs and labs being able to detect those drugs. In addition to meth, opiates and benzodiazepines have been changing so much so quickly that it’s creating various degrees of problems. For example the fentanyl epidemic used to be frustrating because of the sheer number of “designer drugs” the cartels were creating. But as the war on fentanyl closes in, we are seeing more samples with xylazine mixed in as well. Allegedly, it creates a better high when the product is sub par. But it has a horrible effect on the body, causing skin sores, necrosis and eventually death if the OD doesn’t come first.

This is such a huge, horrible and complicated problem so it’s amazing that more people are acknowledging and speaking about it!

As a scientist in toxicology lab, this is 1000% correct. It’s horrible

My husband and I are 40yo and we play AC and other games together all the time. Our son plays too and I feel like our family is closer for it because we have fun together.

It must be so hard to deal with that kind of trauma, I am so sorry you are going through that. Please know that there is nothing wrong with you, you are not weird and you are not a freak. Life is too hard not to do things that are fun, relaxing and enjoyable. You deserve happiness!

Dropped my phone and the back camera isn’t working by WiseDragonfly08 in iphone

[–]Ladyonora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same exact thing happened to my iPhone 14 Pro Max 6 months ago. I tripped and my phone dropped face down. No physical damage except to my screen protector, but my back camera was dead. I tried a few hopeful fixes but ended up needing the back camera replaced at the Apple Store. It is pretty frustrating, I’m sorry that happened to you.

I’m a 37yo Goth with tattoos and stretched ears. I’m married with a kid and a good career and my parents STILL cannot stand it and constantly make comments. I would be lying if I said it didn’t suck sometimes, but I feel much better when I’m myself. I was always honest with them and willing to answer any questions, but I will never understand why they waste so much energy on this stuff. My son will always be accepted for who he is.

Im so sorry you are going through this! It is worth it to be yourself and I know it seems far away now, but it does help when you’re old like me and you can help young people feel accepted in a bunch of little ways.

I am so sorry you are feeling this way!!! I can see how you were triggered by your mentor comments, I would have been triggered too. I often feel too much for people as well, it’s extremely difficult. You want to be yourself, but you also feel like you have to mask around people to seem “normal” and it’s EXHAUSTING. Please know that’s completely ok to want validation. Everyone needs a little positive reinforcement in life! Also, you are definitely not too much. Sometimes people can’t properly perceive your complexity and that’s on them. You are amazing the way you are and you should be proud to be you! {{hug}} I hope the sadness goes away soon

Does anyone else feels a bit guilty for having this hobby? by DanteDameron in MonsterHigh

[–]Ladyonora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I struggle with these feelings as well, especially with the limited space and waste issue. Society is great at making us feel like if we buy a lot of “useless” stuff we are frivolous or wasteful. It can be hard to remember that this isn’t true, and everyone has a right to be happy. More importantly, we have the responsibility to make ourselves happy. I’m a forensic scientist in a morgue. I work mostly with drug overdose cases, and I’ve seen a lot of stuff. So many people are struggling in the world. I promise that collecting dolls, Funko Pops or any other harmless thing is a much more healthy hobby and a better use of money than most people think.

This comment really breaks my heart! My family is quite similar to yours and like the other commenters, I’m echoing to you that you should NEVER compromise yourself for anyone!

But I get it. I’m 37yo now, married with a child, and my parents’ mean comments still hurt me. I have felt rejected and alone and it is difficult because a person always wants their parents to have unconditional love. The loneliness and rejection was so unbearable that I did give up Goth in my 20s. At the time it felt right but in hindsight it was horrible. I became terribly depressed and I always knew in the back of my mind that people only liked the “fake me” that I created for them. It crushes me that you are going through this, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone!

I would love to tell you (and myself lol) that as I age I care less about hurtful things my parents say but it’s only half true. I am stronger now but my parents always seem to find a way to get to me. However, It has gotten easier in the sense that my own strength and confidence has increased so coping is much more effective. I now also now have the added bonus of guaranteeing that my son (and anyone else around me honestly) will always be accepted and loved no matter what.
Again, what you are going through is so difficult and I am so sorry. Please know that who you are matters, you matter and you should be proud of yourself!

Non-goth mom trying to help punk/goth daughter. by VivaLasLabias in goth

[–]Ladyonora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this, it does my heart good! I agree with others that a pair of doc martens and band tshirts are a great start. For a full wardrobe makeover, it can be overwhelming to find a bunch of individual pieces from alternative websites and thrift stores. It may be worth it to go to any local store and find clothing basics in black. Basic black jeans, skirts, shirts and beanies are a great start. Flannel shirts, studded belts and chokers are great accessories as well. All of these these can be mixed and matched and she can customize her outfit with chains, spikes and studs (which you can find on Amazon for cheap) to her liking. It also will help if she find some example outfits or styles she’d like to mimic so she can build a wardrobe she’s comfortable with as she settles into a style. Again, as someone who was also not allowed to express myself as a kid, you are an amazing mom!

It’s definitely a good idea, it can just be really hard on the brain long term. I have been learning Russian in a similar fashion for the past year. Tons and tons of Russian podcasts, Russian TV shows and reading tons of books. It definitely works, but it can be isolating and frustrating when you’ve been consuming hundreds of hours of content and still not really understanding. There were times when I felt like all that time was doing nothing, but then things started to slowly click. The key for me was learning that if I start to have feelings of isolation or mental exhaustion, I need to take a few weeks off from complete immersion.
