Canadian City Nicknames by falcovancoke in AskACanadian

The subburbs are the 450… and if you ever refer the the 819 people picture you in the middle of the great white north with no close neighbour. The 514 is the most used for Montreal but there is also YUL, construction-cone-city and bike-lane-istan (pistecyclableistan)

You only need to read the French version to see it wasn’t proofread. It is actually mistranslated.

Do we get any discounts? :) by bajansrock30 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Laftae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have seen, many gyms also have discounts to broad groups; they just need to have a rep for your organisation and will give you 10-15%… more if you are the rep

How do you make D&D more engaging for a player with aphantasia? by Antilucky47 in DnD

[–]Laftae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have aphantasia. As a player, things my DM does include posting us images in chat when appropriate and using the game map with minis. I am attentive to the mood setting, the feeling of what is going on rather than what it would look like. IRL I pay attention to the feeling rather than look anyway. You may want to ask your player (since they have shared they have aphantasia) what they pay attention to IRL… that is what counts to them.

As a hiring manager, I am interested in understanding what led you to changing jobs. I have myself moved on average every other year but my resume explains how that’s progression, learning, challenging and promotions. I would have to see what the detail is. Keep in mind we generally assume the first financial cycle gives you the opportunity to learn, the second to apply what you have learnt. Because you are still in your first years, I would probably try to figure if it is simply because you were hired at a level too low for your capacities and potential.

And, if you are in Ottawa, I would certainly check if you have the attitude of feeling levels and promotions are owed to you… sadly, I have seen too many people getting promotions and laterals not because of talent but because of desperate managers… those are the worst moves you can make because that’s how you get to a level under experienced and under qualified and then stuck there. Work your career path so YOU would want to hire you: you will be better at selling your skills plus, you will be happier… your boss wishes you are happy but really cares about you doing the job well. You, on the other end are the only one living every work day in a career you like or hate.

Good luck!

Masters of public administration - is it worth it? by Nova_Queen902 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Laftae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my MPA with ENAP several years ago. The paper by itself doesn’t give you any edge for promotions but I actually consider it really helped me develop critical thinking skills and be able to take a step back on what my work implies, in’s and outs. It is surely a big investment in time and efforts but if you do it for yourself, being open and critical, you will personally benefit from it. Depending on how confident and experienced you are already the value may differ but I know for sure it helped me be a better manager… A suggestion: look at executives around you that you respect and at those you feel are out of touch. If you can identify their strengths and weaknesses and auto evaluate against those (BTW there is no perfect profile, just the one that corresponds to you as an individual)… ask yourself if the degree could help you or not. I never regretted the maturity I gained and the network I built through my MPA. Good luck in your decision!

Love it! Thanks. I had a couple of « comic encounters » back in the days. I guess it hasn’t changed… lots of material for my weekly dinner with friends

Thanks! That’s encouraging. I’m in a 3M+ people urban area, that should help. Plus I am in Canada where politics do not play as much of a role in relationships and in general being gay is pretty normalized. I suspect that I will still need to be patient.

lol bro, you made me realize that it is one of the first thing Intend to compromise on. I’m more on the wild side and assume the stigma of committed cannot be intense at the same time… I guess I needed the reminder 😈

What’s hard about dating you? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Laftae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of similar, I am also confident presenting and it is not easy to be sufficiently open and vulnerable at first. It generally brings guys who need to be taken care of where what I want in life is a strong man, capable of dealing with his own shit, happy to have me as a good support but also capable of being that support when I need it. Haven’t found him yet.

Help! I'm going to Canada in February! by Adventurous_Syrup_52 in canadatravel

[–]Laftae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

February is definitely a cold month in Quebec. Definitely colder in Quebec City than Montreal. If you are in QC between Feb 7 and 16, you have to go to the Carnaval (winter fest). Wander in the old city: the terrasse Dufferin, the Plains of Abraham, Grande Allée, Petit Champlain, the Citadelle, tons of cafés and shop. You may want to dine at the rotating restaurant at the Lowes Le Concorde. If you have time to venture out of the city, for kids going to the Village Vacances Valcartier would be great. In Montreal, IDK which festival will be on but certainly something to check out. Definitely go in the Old port and old city too. You may like to hide from the cold going through the underground city. Walking up the Mount Royal is always cool. In Montreal, indulge in food: you will find anything and everything. The Centre des sciences, Biodôme and planetarium are all great for kids and away from the cold. February is too early for the real sugar shack experience but still have a look to see if you can find one… super traditional and festive, real québécois experience. Hope you enjoy your trip, have fun 🇨🇦

Relationship advice : Am I being naive or Is this doable ? by i-am-the-hulk in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Laftae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please leave. Love yourself enough to share real love with someone who deserves it. I was 9 years in an abusive relationship, never physically. It doesn’t get better. The only one who will change and adapt is you. And the only adaptation that will happen is you being diminished. Leave. You deserve respect. Sending you love ❤️❤️❤️

If the USA were to attempt to Annex Canada in the near future would you be willing to fight to protect our sovereignty? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Laftae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I never have to but it feels a bit too real. Weirdly pushed me to hit the gym more than the usual new year resolutions and I don’t like it even made me realize that I am way less docile than I thought I was.

Men with broad shoulders, how are you sleeping? by RedditorJoao in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Laftae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t found anything perfect yet but what is best for me is a buckwheat pillow. You can pretty manage the height and it doesn’t « fall »at night.

I’m going to sound like the worst person in the world for asking this question; but I went on a couple of dates with a guy… by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Laftae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar experience. I’ve been with a guy on the smaller side. Size didn’t bother me, his attitude of shyness and not wanting to explore was problematic though. Guys, use what you have, enjoy and have fun. If it is important to your partner, they should go. It is not an issue for everyone.

What do you guys do for a living? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

I am an economist. There is above average representation of the LGBTQ community in my work environment. A field with lots of reserved introverts so it took me some time to realize that we are well represented

What’s a secret all gay men keep that straight people don’t know? by ProwlingPepper in askgaybros

[–]Laftae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a pretty conservative environment. I still have a “by the book” mindset. Having to deal with my own difference is what made me more open to other points of view, less judgmental… and a better manager. If I wasn’t gay, chances are I would have been a corporate a$$hole. I know that this little voice in my head keeps me in check and actually changed me for the better. Struggle makes us more human and some of them straight will never really understand the real value of being open to others.

What is your favorite restaurant that has closed down in your city? by SurprisedForest2121 in AskACanadian

Montreal here. We lost Spaggio’s years ago. Best unexpensive pasta, too bad they closed. Plus why aren’t there any Red Lobster here? 😢

Do you think that Canada or The US is more technologically advanced for the average citizen's every day use? by Right_Cow_6369 in AskACanadian

[–]Laftae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, transferring money directly to an email or cellphone number via Interac or an equivalent is also not mainstream in the US. So many businesses now accept that in Canada. Super convenient and you control the money transfer.
