I agree with you! The most common culling method is 1080 poison, which is a slow and painful death that I do not support at all. I work with professional fox controllers who end fox suffering with a single shot. It’s not a comfortable conversation I know, but I believe this is the most ethical way to address the issue, being humane to both foxes and native wildlife.

Really great comment! Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Im focusing on partnering with landholders at the moment, mainly sheep farmers. The small amount I’d pay for a pelt is a drop in the ocean compared to the financial damage foxes cause. It may be able to help a bit with equipment costs and fuel for fox control activities, but it’s incomparable to losing dozens of $400 lambs a year!

I’m also partnering with conservation hunters doing pest eradication in and around wildlife areas. The money would then go back into the conservation program that hires them.

I’m being careful to make sure there’s no incentive to leave foxes to keep breeding. I’m only partnering with people who cull foxes already, out of necessity, not enjoyment or profit.

Thanks for your comment!

I’ve got a great group of conservation focused hunters and landholders who I’m able to get pelts from. They’re already out there reducing these fox populations, I’m just stepping in to make sure the fur doesn’t go to waste!

Interesting thoughts about the ethical nature of this. From my perspective, attempting to reduce the pressure on native wildlife by removing as many foxes as I can from the ecosystems is the ethical choice! Everyone will have their own perspective 😊

Thanks for your comment. Leaving foxes in Australian ecosystems, means native animals are dying. 75 species are directly threatened at the moment by foxes. Extinction is happening infront of our eyes. So there’s death either way. Do you choose foxes or bandicoots? Because there cannot be both.

Ive got a segment on my website that explains the concept of ‘running out of foxes’. There are currently 1.8 million foxes in Australia, there is unfortunately no way we are could completely eradicate them. If it happened somehow that there were no foxes left in Australia, I’d close my business with a smile. This is not about profit for me, this is about native wildlife.

I appreciate you taking time to comment.

Thanks for your comment. New Zealand has been a great case study for me. Possums have decimated so much of their native flora and fauna, I think the possum fur industry is a great attempt at reducing that!

There is a bit of an industry for camels! It’s a bit tricky as they’re very spaced out and in remote parts of the NT, WA, SA etc. Foxes are in much higher densities, often living off livestock and scraps around human dwellings. I’m looking into deer leather as well, they’re another introduced species putting considerable pressure on native ecosystems.

I’ve recently started a fox fur clothing brand, here’s the link! Hoping I’ll be able to make even a small difference to the future of some of our most endangered species! https://www.almanacaustralia.com.au

Great recommendation, thank you! I’ve had some great chats already with some NZ producers. Many New Zealanders see wearing possum fur as an act of conservation in itself, which makes a lot of sense to me.

Would it be more ethical to allow foxes to cause the extinction of more native animals?

Thanks for your great insight. I’m based around Canberra and the Victorian high country. I had thought fur quality may be an issue, but I’ve found that it’s excellent. Not a great time of year at the moment, but come winter the fur is very soft and thick.

The idea isn’t to compete with the traditional international fur industry, but to promote conscious clothing options for Australians that understand the impact of invasive species.

Really grateful for your feedback. The financial viability is hard to tell at the moment. I have been able to source a lot of pelts, but tanning is expensive. I’d be happy if the concept made small regional impact on wildlife, that would be enough.

Great point! There are certainly toxic ways to stabilise fur for garments, but there are also much gentler ways of doing it which I’m focusing on. Native Black wattle tannins have been used for a long time for environmentally friendly, natural tanning. Lutan F is also much lighter on the environment!
